1 Kings 6:33 Summary

The verse 1 Kings 6:33 tells us about the beautiful doorposts Solomon made for the sanctuary entrance. These doorposts were made of strong olive wood and had four sides, showing the strength and stability of God's house. Just like the doorposts, our faith in God should be strong and firm, like a foundation, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 3:11. As we read about the sanctuary, we can remember that God wants us to come to Him with reverence and respect, just like the Israelites did when they worshiped in the sanctuary (Hebrews 12:28).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the four-sided doorposts in 1 Kings 6:33?

The four-sided doorposts of olive wood signify the strength and stability of the sanctuary entrance, much like the firm foundation of our faith in Jesus Christ, as seen in 1 Corinthians 3:11 and Ephesians 2:20.

Why did Solomon use olive wood for the doorposts in 1 Kings 6:33?

Olive wood was a durable and valuable material, symbolizing the richness and beauty of God's creation, as noted in Isaiah 41:19, and highlighting the importance of the sanctuary as a place of worship and reverence.

How does the construction of the sanctuary entrance in 1 Kings 6:33 relate to our spiritual lives?

The attention to detail and craftsmanship in the sanctuary's construction remind us of the care and devotion God has for us, as seen in Psalms 139:14, and encourage us to approach our relationship with Him with similar dedication and reverence.

What can we learn from the repetition of 'in the same way' in 1 Kings 6:33?

The phrase 'in the same way' indicates a consistency and uniformity in the construction of the sanctuary, reflecting the consistency and faithfulness of God's character, as expressed in Hebrews 13:8 and Malachi 3:6.

Reflection Questions

  1. As I reflect on the sanctuary entrance in 1 Kings 6:33, what doors of opportunity is God opening for me to serve and worship Him?

  3. What are the 'doorposts' in my life that need to be strengthened or renewed, and how can I trust God to be my firm foundation?
  4. In what ways can I approach my relationship with God with the same care and devotion that Solomon showed in constructing the sanctuary?

Cambridge Bible on 1 Kings 6:33

33. for the door of the temple] The word translated ‘door’ is the same which is rendered entering in 1 Kings 6:31. (So R.V.) The entering here meant is that from the porch into the holy place. posts of olive tree] The word is that used for side-posts in 31. There is no mention here of the whole framework. But following the description given above we may assume that the dimensions of this doorway were also the same in height as in width. a fourth part of the wall] The Hebrew has here a preposition before the numeral. Render ‘out of a fourth part of the wall.’ The meaning is that the aperture was a fourth part of the wall in width, and the same measure in height. That would be five cubits each way, larger by one cubit than the doorway from the holy place into the most holy. Such a space was cut out of he wall for the doors.

Barnes' Notes on 1 Kings 6:33

The door of the temple - The door, that is, which led from the porch into the great chamber of the temple. Its posts were “a fourth part of the wall,” or, “five cubits high,” which was, therefore, the height of the doorway.

Whedon's Commentary on 1 Kings 6:33

33. The door of the temple — The outer door leading from the porch into the holy place. A fourth part — Not of the wall, but of the doorway, as in 1 Kings 6:31.
