If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, their hearts will return to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah; then they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”

Jeroboam’s Idolatry

²⁶Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom might revert to the house of David.²⁷If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, their hearts will return to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah; then they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”

Summary

This verse describes King Jeroboam's fear of losing the allegiance of his people to King Rehoboam of Judah if they continued to worship at the temple in Jerusalem. To prevent this, Jeroboam built two golden calves as alternative places of worship in Bethel and Dan, leading the Israelites into idolatry. Jeroboam's actions reveal his lack of trust in God's provision and his disobedience to God's commandments, ultimately resulting in the downfall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

And they shall kill me - He found he had little cause to trust this fickle people; though they had declared for him it was more from caprice, desire of change, and novelty, than from any regular and praiseworthy principle.
