1 Chronicles 8:38 Summary

This verse lists the six sons of Azel, who was a descendant of Benjamin. The fact that their names are recorded shows that each person is important and valued by God (Psalm 139:13-16). Just like Azel's sons, we are all part of a larger family and have a unique place in God's plan (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). By remembering and honoring our own family history, we can appreciate the ways in which God has worked in our lives and the lives of those who came before us (Deuteronomy 4:9-10).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the names of Azel's sons listed in 1 Chronicles 8:38?

The names of Azel's sons are listed to provide a record of the descendants of Benjamin, as is the custom in the book of 1 Chronicles, which is focused on the genealogy of the Israelites (1 Chronicles 1:1, 1 Chronicles 2:1).

What can we learn from the fact that Azel had six sons?

The fact that Azel had six sons may indicate that he was blessed by God, as large families were seen as a blessing in biblical times (Psalm 127:3-5, Jeremiah 29:6).

How does this verse fit into the larger context of 1 Chronicles 8?

This verse is part of a larger section in 1 Chronicles 8 that lists the descendants of Benjamin, which is one of the twelve tribes of Israel (1 Chronicles 8:1, 1 Chronicles 9:1).

What is the significance of the names of Azel's sons?

The names of Azel's sons, such as Azrikam, Bocheru, and Obadiah, may have held special meaning in biblical times, and some of these names are also found in other parts of the Bible, such as Obadiah, who was a prophet (Obadiah 1:1).

Reflection Questions

  1. What does this verse reveal about the importance of family and lineage in biblical times?
  2. How can I apply the principle of recording and remembering my own family's history, as seen in this verse?
  3. What does the fact that Azel's sons are listed by name say about their individual worth and value in God's eyes?
  4. In what ways can I honor my own heritage and family history, as reflected in this verse?

Gill's Exposition on 1 Chronicles 8:38

And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bochim, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan,.... Which make the said number: all these were the sons of Azel; his family was large.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 1 Chronicles 8:38

And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel. Azel had six sons... Azrikam, Bocheru.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 8:38

(38) Bocheru.—Some MSS. read “his firstborn,” with which, with different points, the LXX. and the Syriac agree. This seems right, as the conjunctive particle is wanting between Azrikam and the doubtful word, and Bocheru would be anomalous as a proper name. (See Note on 1 Chronicles 8:40.) Azel.—A place near Jerusalem was so called (Zechariah 14:5; Micah 1:11).
