1 Chronicles 4:39 Summary

This verse tells us that the men journeyed to the entrance of Gedor to find food for their animals. It shows us that God provides for His people through the natural world, just like He does for the birds of the air (Matthew 6:26). The men's decision to move in search of pasture teaches us about the importance of providing for our families and trusting God to meet our needs (1 Timothy 5:8, Psalm 23:1-2). By trusting in God's provision, we can have peace and confidence, just like the men in this verse who found 'rich, good pasture' for their flocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the men journey to the entrance of Gedor?

The men journeyed to the entrance of Gedor in search of pasture for their flocks, indicating that they were shepherds who needed to find food for their animals, much like Abraham did in Genesis 12:10 when he went to Egypt in search of food during a famine.

What can we learn from the men's decision to move in search of pasture?

The men's decision to move in search of pasture teaches us about the importance of providing for our families and being willing to take action to meet their needs, as seen in 1 Timothy 5:8 where it says that if anyone does not provide for their relatives, they have denied the faith.

How does this verse relate to the broader theme of God's provision?

This verse shows how God provides for His people through the natural world, as seen in Psalm 23:1-2 where it says that the Lord is our Shepherd and He leads us to green pastures, and in Matthew 6:26 where Jesus teaches us that God feeds the birds of the air and will also provide for us.

What can we infer about the men's trust in God's provision?

The fact that the men journeyed to the entrance of Gedor in search of pasture suggests that they trusted God to provide for them, even if it meant moving to a new location, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6 where it says that we should trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways that I can trust God to provide for my needs, just like the men in this verse trusted Him to provide pasture for their flocks?
  2. How can I apply the principle of providing for my family's needs, as seen in this verse, to my own life and circumstances?
  3. What are some 'green pastures' that God has led me to in the past, and how can I trust Him to continue to provide for me in the future?
  4. In what ways can I be like the men in this verse, who were willing to take action to meet their needs, and yet still trust in God's sovereignty and provision?

Gill's Exposition on 1 Chronicles 4:39

And they went to the entrance of Gedor,.... There was a city of this name in the tribe of Judah, 1 Chronicles 4:18 but this seems to be further off, and perhaps is the same with Gedaris, mentioned by

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 1 Chronicles 4:39

And they went to the entrance of Gedor, even unto the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 4:39

To the entrance of Gedor, to that country that belongs to Gedor, or borders upon it; either that Gedor, , or that called Gederah, . Unto the east side of the valley; of which See Poole ",52".

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 4:39

(38) These mentioned by their names.—Literally, these who have come (forward) with names, that is, have been adduced by name. Were princes in their families.—Ameers or chieftains in their clans. And the house of their fathers increased.—And their father-houses had spread greatly. Finding their territory too strait for them under these conditions, and probably also because of the encroachments of their powerful neighbours, the Judζans and Philistines, the Simeonite chieftains went forth at the head of their clans to seek new settlements. And (so) they went to the entrance of Gedor, even unto the east side of the valley.—Gedor can hardly be the town of that name in the hill country of Judah (Joshua 15:58). The LXX. read Gerar (Γεραρα).Even unto the east side of the valley.—So far as to the east of the valley, that is, apparently, the valley of or near the unknown Gedor, or Gerar. The only considerable valley south-east of Judah is the Arabah, below the Dead Sea. That this locality is meant appears likely from the vicinity of Mount Seir and the Amalekites (1 Chronicles 4:42). To seek pasture for their flocks.—This statement is of interest as proving that even so late as the reign of Hezekiah, those Israelite clans which bordered on the desert were still nomades, like the Beidawis. (Comp. Genesis 13:5-12).

Cambridge Bible on 1 Chronicles 4:39

39. the entrance of Gedor] R.V. the entering in of Gedor. The Gedor of Jos 15:58 is identified with Jedur, Ijdur (north of Hebron, Bädeker, p. 135), the neighbourhood of which seems an unlikely scene in the days of Hezekiah for the exploit described in 1 Chronicles 4:41. LXX. has Gerar (cp. Genesis 20:1; Genesis 26:1), perhaps rightly.

Barnes' Notes on 1 Chronicles 4:39
