2 1 Chronicles 5:1–2 These were the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel. Though he was the firstborn, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel, because Reuben defiled his father’s bed. So he is not reckoned according to birthright. 1 Chronicles 26:10 Summary

This verse tells us about a man named Hosah, who had sons that were capable of serving in the temple. Even though Shimri was not the firstborn, his father appointed him as the first, which shows that God can use anyone, regardless of their birth order, to do important work for Him, as seen in Genesis 25:23. This reminds us that our value and worth come from God, not from our family or social status. Just like Hosah recognized Shimri's leadership abilities, we can trust God to guide us in recognizing and developing the gifts and talents of those around us, and to use us for His purposes, as seen in 1 Corinthians 12:4-7.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean that Shimri was appointed as the first, even though he was not the firstborn?

This indicates that Hosah, Shimri's father, recognized Shimri's leadership abilities and chose him to be the first among his sons, similar to how God chose the second-born Isaac over the first-born Ishmael in Genesis 17:18-21, or how Jacob was chosen over his twin brother Esau in Genesis 25:23.

Who were the Merarites and what role did they play in the biblical narrative?

The Merarites were a clan of the Levites, descended from Merari, one of the three sons of Levi, as seen in Numbers 3:20, and they were responsible for various tasks in the tabernacle and temple, including serving as gatekeepers and musicians.

Why is it significant that Hosah had sons who were capable of serving in the temple?

This highlights the importance of family legacy and the role of parents in training and appointing their children for service to God, as seen in Psalms 78:4, where parents are encouraged to teach their children about God's deeds so that the next generation will know them.

How does this verse relate to the broader theme of leadership and succession in the Bible?

This verse illustrates the principle of recognizing and appointing leaders based on their gifts and abilities, rather than solely on their birth order, which is a theme seen in various biblical accounts, such as the appointment of Joshua as Moses' successor in Numbers 27:18-23.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways that I can recognize and appoint leaders within my own family or community, based on their gifts and abilities?
  2. How can I, like Hosah, cultivate a sense of leadership and responsibility in my own children or those under my care?
  3. What are some biblical principles that guide the process of appointing leaders, and how can I apply these principles in my own life?
  4. In what ways can I trust God to guide me in recognizing and appointing leaders, just as Hosah trusted God to guide him in appointing Shimri as the first among his sons?

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 26:10

(10) Also Hosah, of the children of Merari.—Four chiefs of the sons of Hosah are named, and thirteen assigned as the total number of families belonging to this clan (1 Chronicles 26:10-11). Adding them to the 18 of Meshelemiah and the 62 of Obed-edom, we get a total of 93 principal porters, presiding over the 4,000 Levites appointed to that work (1 Chronicles 23:5). Simri (Shimri) the chief (for though he was not his firstborn . . .).—This may mean either that the oldest family had died out, or that none of these families could prove its seniority to the rest.
