1 Chronicles 23:17 Summary

This verse tells us about Eliezer and his son Rehabiah, who had many descendants. It shows us how God can bless a family and make them grow, just like He promised to Abraham in Genesis 17:2. We can learn from this verse to trust in God's plan for our own families and to prioritize honoring Him in our homes, as encouraged in Deuteronomy 6:6-7 and Ephesians 6:1-4. By doing so, we can experience God's faithfulness and blessing in our own lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can we learn about Eliezer from this verse?

From 1 Chronicles 23:17, we see that Eliezer had only one son, Rehabiah, but Rehabiah's descendants were very numerous, indicating God's blessing on their family, similar to the promises made in Genesis 17:2 and Genesis 28:3.

Why is it significant that Rehabiah was the firstborn of Eliezer?

As the firstborn, Rehabiah would have received a special inheritance and blessing, as seen in Deuteronomy 21:15-17, and his numerous descendants would have also been a testament to God's faithfulness to the family of Eliezer.

How does this verse fit into the larger context of 1 Chronicles?

This verse is part of a larger genealogy in 1 Chronicles, which highlights the importance of family and lineage in the biblical narrative, as seen in 1 Chronicles 1-9, and demonstrates God's sovereign plan to establish the tribes of Israel, as mentioned in Exodus 28:1 and Numbers 1:1-54.

What can we apply from this verse to our own lives?

We can learn from this verse the importance of trusting in God's sovereignty and faithfulness, even in our own families and lineage, as encouraged in Psalm 127:3-5 and Jeremiah 29:11.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does this verse teach me about the importance of family and legacy in my own life?
  2. How can I trust in God's sovereign plan for my family, just as Eliezer's family was blessed?

Gill's Exposition on 1 Chronicles 23:17

And the sons of Eliezer were Rehabiah the chief,.... The first and only begotten, as it follows: and Eliezer had none other sons; before nor after him: but the sons of Rehabiah were very many; or

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 1 Chronicles 23:17

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 23:17

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 23:17

(17) And the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief.—The word “were” (became) ought not to be in italics in the text, as it is expressed in the Hebrew. The chief (head) means founder and eponym of the clan the sons of Rehabiah. And Eliezer had none other sons.—Literally, And there became not to Eliezer ether sons, and the sons of Rehabiah had multiplied exceedingly (unto height, 1 Chronicles 22:5). The clan Rehabiah was very populous. Thus (1 Chronicles 23:16-17) the descendants of Moses were comprised in two father-houses, or clans, viz., Shebuel and Rehabiah.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 23:17

Verse 17. But the sons of Rehabiah were very many.] The Targum says, "On account of the merits of Moses, the posterity of Rehabiah were multiplied to more than sixty myriads."
