1 Chronicles 23:10 Summary

This verse tells us about the sons of Shimei, who were part of the Levites, a group of people chosen by God to serve in the temple. The fact that their names are recorded in the Bible shows how important family and lineage were to the Israelites, as seen in other parts of the Bible like Genesis 5:1-32 and Exodus 6:13-27. Just like the sons of Shimei, we each have our own role to play in serving God and our communities, whether that's in a big way or a small way, and we can learn from their examples to respect and honor our own heritage and the people around us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the sons of Shimei listed twice in 1 Chronicles 23:9-10?

The listing of the sons of Shimei in 1 Chronicles 23:9-10 may seem repetitive, but it is likely due to the different roles or families within the tribe, similar to how the sons of Kohath are listed in 1 Chronicles 23:12, emphasizing the importance of accurate genealogical records, as seen in the book of Numbers 1:1-4 and 1 Chronicles 21:1-6.

What is the significance of the number of sons Shimei had?

The number of sons Shimei had, four in all, may not hold specific spiritual significance on its own, but it contributes to the broader understanding of the Levites' families and their roles in the service of the Lord, as outlined in Numbers 3:6-10 and 1 Chronicles 6:1-30.

How does this verse relate to the overall structure of 1 Chronicles?

This verse is part of a larger section in 1 Chronicles that focuses on the genealogy and organization of the Levites, highlighting their crucial role in the worship and service of the Lord, as commanded in Deuteronomy 10:8 and 1 Chronicles 15:2.

What can we learn from the specific names of Shimei's sons?

The names of Shimei's sons, Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah, may not carry individual spiritual significance, but their listing demonstrates the care with which biblical genealogies were recorded, emphasizing the importance of family and lineage, as seen in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38.

Reflection Questions

  1. As we reflect on the sons of Shimei, how can we apply the principle of honoring our family heritage and lineage in our own lives?
  2. In what ways can the precise recording of genealogies, like that of Shimei's sons, inspire us to be diligent in our own record-keeping and respect for tradition?
  3. How might the distinction between the two sets of sons of Shimei, as noted in 1 Chronicles 23:9-10, encourage us to appreciate the diversity within our own families and communities?
  4. What does the inclusion of this verse in the biblical narrative teach us about the value God places on every individual, regardless of their role or position within a family or community?

Gill's Exposition on 1 Chronicles 23:10

And the sons of Shimei,.... The son of Gershon, and brother of Laadan, according to Kimchi, which seems right: were Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah; these four were the sons of Shimei; descendants of his in the times of David.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on 1 Chronicles 23:10

The sons of Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three. No JFB commentary on these verses.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 23:10

The sons of Shimei; not that Shimei named , but another, and possibly the son or grandson of that Shimei.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 23:10

(10) And the sons of Shimei.—That is, of Shimei the “brother” of Laadan (1 Chronicles 23:7). The bnê Shimei formed four houses, but were reckoned as three, because the two last-named, Jeush and Beriah, were numerically weak, and therefore counted as a single house and class (1 Chronicles 23:11). Zina.—1 Chronicles 23:11 reads “Zizah” for this name, which is thus spelt quite differently in two consecutive verses. “Zizah” is probably right. (Comp. 1 Chronicles 4:37; 2 Chronicles 11:20.) So the LXX. and Vulg.; Syriac and Arabic read “Zabda.”

Cambridge Bible on 1 Chronicles 23:10

10. Zina] In 1 Chronicles 23:11 Zizah; the two words are readily confused in Hebrew writing.
