1 Chronicles 2:43 Summary

This verse, 1 Chronicles 2:43, lists the sons of Hebron, who was a son of Caleb. It shows us that every person in the Bible, no matter how briefly they are mentioned, is important to God's story. Just like how God knows and cares for each of us (as seen in Jeremiah 1:5), He knew and had a purpose for Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. Understanding this helps us see our own place in God's larger plan, reminding us that we are each valued and known by Him, just as it is written in Psalm 100:3.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Hebron in the Bible?

Hebron was a son of Caleb, as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 2:42, and his sons are listed in 1 Chronicles 2:43, which includes Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. This Hebron is different from the city of Hebron, which is mentioned in Genesis 23:2 and is an important location in the biblical narrative.

What can we learn from the genealogy in 1 Chronicles 2?

The genealogy in 1 Chronicles 2, including 1 Chronicles 2:43, teaches us about the importance of family and heritage in the biblical narrative, as seen in other passages like Genesis 5:1 and Exodus 6:14. It also highlights God's sovereign plan and His faithfulness to His people across generations.

How does this verse fit into the larger story of the Bible?

1 Chronicles 2:43 is part of the historical account of the Israelites, connecting the patriarchs of the Old Testament, such as those mentioned in Genesis 1:1 and following, to the establishment of the monarchy in 1 Samuel 1:1. Understanding these connections helps deepen our appreciation for God's overarching plan of redemption.

Why are the names of Hebron's sons significant?

The names of Hebron's sons, Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema, are significant because they are part of the detailed record of the Israelites' family lines, emphasizing the importance of each individual in God's plan, as seen in passages like Psalm 139:13-16, which speaks to God's knowledge and care for each person.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 2:43

(42-55) These verses revert to the Calebite stocks. Interpreted as merely bearing upon the extraction of individuals about whom, for the most part, nothing whatever is known beyond what these brief notices reveal, the section presents great difficulties. The key to it appears to be the assumption that it is an ancient record of the relations between certain great branches of the tribe of Judah, and their various settlements; in other words, these lists are tribal and topographical, rather than genealogical.
