The Aroerite; so called possibly because his station and quarters were upon the river Aroer beyond Jordan, being placed there for the defence of those parts.

(44) Ashterathite.—Of Ashtaroth, a town in Bashan (1 Chronicles 6:71). Jehiel.—Heb., Jeuel. Margin, “Jeiel.” Hothan.—A misprint of the Authorised Version for Aotham. There was an Aroer in Reuben, and another in Gad (Joshua 13:16; Joshua 13:25).
