Matthew 16

1 And the pharisees and sadducees came to Him, and captiously asked Him to shew them a sign from heaven. 2 But He answered them, fair weather, for the sky is red:} 3 foul weather to-day, for the sky is red and lowring. hypocrites, can ye distinguish the appearance of the sky, and not the signs of times?} 4 wicked and degenerate race demand a sign; but no sign shall be given them, except that of the prophet Jonah.} And He left them and went away. 5 Now when his disciples departed to the other side, they forgot to take bread 6 and when Jesus said to them, 7 they said one to another, because we have taken no bread. 8 And Jesus knowing said to them, 9 among five thousand, and how many baskets ye took } 10 ye took } 11 that ye do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, to beware of the leaven of the pharisees and of the sadducees?} 12 Then they understood, that He did not bid them beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the pharisees and of the sadducees. 13 And when Jesus came into the parts of Cesarea Philippi, He asked his disciples, saying, 14 And they answered, Some John the Baptist, others Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 saith He unto them, 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus replied and said unto him, unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven.} 18 Peter, so upon this rock, will I build my church, and the gates of death shall not prevail against it.} 20 Then charged He his disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Messiah. 21 from that time began Jesus to acquaint his disciples, that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many from the elders, and chief priests, and scribes; and be put to death, and be raised again the third day. 22 Then Peter took Him and began to expostulate with Him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: may this never be unto thee. 23 But He turned and said unto Peter, of men.} 24 Then said Jesus to his disciples, 26 soul? or what shall a man give a ransom for his soul?} 28 I tell you of a truth, there be some of those standing here, who shall not taste of death, till they have seen the Son of man coming in his kingdom.}
