1 Therefore [as a result of this], there is now [in this present time] no [none] condemnation [a guilty verdict] for those who are [in a relationship with] in Christ Jesus [the anointed Savior]. word study 2 For in Christ Jesus [the Anointed One, our Lord] the law [principle, rule] of the Spirit [breath, vital principle] of life [eternal, spiritual existence] set you free [released, liberated] from the law [regulation, principle] of sin [missing the mark, rebellion] and death [separation, destruction]. word study 3 For what the law [unable to save, powerless] was powerless to do [weak and ineffective] in that it was weakened [made feeble, lacking strength] by the flesh [human nature, sinful tendencies], God [the Father, Creator] did by sending His own Son [as an offering, a sacrifice] in the likeness [image, resemblance] of sinful man [humanity, fallen nature], as an offering [a sacrifice, atonement] for sin [rebellion, disobedience]. He thus condemned [judged, sentenced] sin [evil, wickedness] in the flesh [human nature, physical body], word study 4 so that the righteous standard [ordinance, requirement] of the law [God’s commandments, divine regulations] might be fulfilled [completed, satisfied] in us, who do not walk [live, conduct ourselves] according to the flesh [our sinful nature, physical body] but according to the Spirit [God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, our spiritual nature]. word study 5 Those who live according to [in harmony with, following] the flesh [human nature, sinful tendencies] set their minds on [focus on, think about] the things of the flesh [carnal desires, worldly interests]; but those who live according to [in step with, guided by] the Spirit [God’s presence, divine nature] set their minds on [concentrate on, prioritize] the things of the Spirit [spiritual truths, heavenly matters]. word study 6 The mind [purpose, mental inclination] of the flesh [physical body, sinful nature] is death [separation from God, spiritual death], but the mind [purpose, mental inclination] of the Spirit [breath of God, divine nature] is life [eternal existence, spiritual vitality] and peace [harmony, inner tranquility, freedom from war], word study 7 because the mind [the thoughts and intentions] of the flesh [human nature, physical body] is hostile [enmity, opposition] to God [the one true deity]: It does not submit [obey, be subject] to God’s law [the rules and regulations of God], nor can it do so [is not able, lacks the power]. word study 8 Those [who are dominated by] controlled by the flesh [sinful nature, physical body] cannot [are not able, it is not possible] please [be agreeable to, satisfy] God [the one true deity, Creator]. word study 9 You, however, are controlled [guided and empowered] not by the flesh [your sinful nature, physical body], but by the Spirit [the divine breath, God’s presence], if the Spirit of God [the Holy Spirit, God’s essence] lives in you. And if anyone does not have [possess or is devoid of] the Spirit of Christ [the anointed one’s presence, God’s nature], he does not belong to Christ [is not a child of God, does not have a relationship with Jesus]. word study 10 But if [on the condition that] Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah] is in you, your body [physical person, flesh] is dead [lifeless, spiritually deceased] because of sin [missing the mark, rebellion against God], yet your spirit [breath, vital principle] is alive [living, vibrant] because of righteousness [justification, being right with God]. word study 11 And if the Spirit [the vital principle] of Him who raised Jesus [God’s salvation] from the dead [lifeless] is living [dwelling] in you, He who raised Christ [the anointed] Jesus from the dead [lifeless] will also give life [to make alive] to your mortal [liable to die] bodies [the whole physical person] through His Spirit [the divine breath], who lives [dwelling with] in you. word study 12 Therefore [as a consequence, in light of this], brothers [fellow believers], we have an obligation [are debtors, owe a debt], but it is not to the flesh [our sinful nature], to live [exist, have life] according to [in line with] it [our human desires]. word study 13 For if you live [according to your sinful nature] according to the flesh [your physical body, human nature], you will die [spiritually, be separated from God]; but if by the Spirit [the power of God, divine breath] you put to death [mortify, kill] the deeds [actions, works] of the body [your physical person, human nature], you will live [eternally, have life]. word study 14 For all [as many as, whosoever] who are led [guided, brought] by the Spirit [the vital principle] of God [the one true deity] are [exist as, are known as] sons [children] of God [the Father, the supreme Being]. word study 15 For you did not receive a spirit [of bondage, enslaving] of slavery [a state of bondage] that returns you to fear [a feeling of dread], but you received the Spirit [the vital principle] of sonship [adoption as sons], by whom [through the power of the Holy Spirit] we cry [shouting out loudly], “Abba [a term of endearment]! Father [a male parent]!” word study 16 The Spirit [the vital principle] Himself testifies [bears witness, confirms] with our spirit [mental disposition, inner being] that we are [exist as, have the nature of] God’s [the one true deity] children [sons, offspring]. word study 17 And if we are children [born of God, having God’s nature], then we are heirs [joint-heirs, co-inheritors]: heirs of God [the supreme Creator, our heavenly Father] and co-heirs with Christ [the anointed Messiah, our Lord]—if indeed we suffer [endure persecution, share in His pain] with Him, so that we may also be glorified [honored, exalted] with Him. word study 18 I consider [reckon, estimate] that our present [current, at this time] sufferings [hardships, afflictions] are not comparable [worthy to be compared] to the glory [honor, praise] that will be revealed [uncovered, disclosed] in us [toward us, into our lives]. word study 19 The creation [all of nature, everything God has made] waits in eager expectation [with intense anticipation, patiently waiting] for the revelation [unveiling, disclosure] of the sons [children, heirs] of God [the one true deity, Creator of all]. word study 20 For the creation [all living things, the universe] was subjected [placed under, made to obey] to futility [vanity, uselessness, a state of frustration], not by its own will [voluntarily, willingly], but because of the One [Him who, God] who subjected [put under, brought into subjection] it, in hope [expectation, trust, a confident looking forward] word study 21 that the creation [all living things, the universe] itself will be set free [delivered, liberated] from its bondage [slavery, captivity] to decay [corruption, ruin] and brought into the glorious [splendid, majestic] freedom [liberty, release] of the children [sons, offspring] of God [the Almighty, Creator]. word study 22 We know [are conscious, have spiritual awareness] that the whole [entire, all] creation [the thing created, God’s handiwork] has been groaning [suffering, mourning] together [in unity, as one] in the pains [travail, birth-pains] of childbirth [labor, suffering] until [up to this point, to the present time] the present time [now, this moment]. word study 23 Not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits [a foretaste, the beginning of a harvest] of the Spirit [the divine breath, God’s vital principle], groan inwardly [with deep sorrow, overwhelmed] as we wait eagerly [with expectation, anticipating] for our adoption [to be made sons, to receive full rights] as sons, the redemption [liberation, being set free] of our bodies [our physical selves, the whole person]. word study 24 For in this [confident expectation, trusting] hope [a deep-seated assurance] we were saved [rescued, delivered from harm]; but hope [a longing for something yet to come] that is seen [perceived, visibly present] is no [absolutely not] hope [a confident expectation] at all [whatsoever]. Who [which person, one who] hopes [trusts, expects] for what he can already [presently, with his own eyes] see [perceive, behold]? word study 25 But if [in the event that, if indeed] we hope [to expect, have confidence] for what we do not yet see [perceive, behold], we wait [expect, await eagerly] for it patiently [with perseverance, through endurance] [because of our trust, in faith]. word study 26 In the same way [likewise, in a similar manner], the Spirit [the vital principle or mental disposition] helps [assists, supports] us in our weakness [infirmity, frailty, lack of strength]. For we do not know [are unaware, have no understanding] how we ought to pray [what to pray for as we should], but the Spirit Himself [He] intercedes [makes petition, prays] for us with groans [deep sighs] too deep for words [inexpressible, unspeakable]. word study 27 And He who searches [examines, investigates] our hearts [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions] knows [perceives, understands] the mind [purpose, mental inclination] of the Spirit [the vital principle, God’s presence], because the Spirit [the divine Helper] intercedes [makes prayers, pleads] for the saints [God’s holy people, set apart] according to [in line with, following] the will [desire, purpose] of God [the supreme deity, Creator]. word study 28 And we know [are conscious, have spiritual awareness] that God [the one true deity] works [cooperates, brings together] all things [every circumstance, every event] together [in harmony, for a common purpose] for the good [benefit, well-being] of those who love [show esteem and goodwill towards] Him, who are called [invited, chosen] according to [in line with, matching] His purpose [plan, intention]. word study 29 For those God [having prior knowledge of] foreknew, He also predestined [determined beforehand, foreordained] to be conformed [made similar, transformed] to the image [likeness, representation] of His Son [the Messiah, Jesus], so that He would be the firstborn [preeminent, highest-ranking] among many [numerous, abundant] brothers [believers, fellow Christians]. word study 30 And those He predestined [determined beforehand, foreordained], He also called [invited, summoned]; those He called [invited to follow Him], He also justified [declared righteous, made right]; those He justified [made innocent, freed from guilt], He also glorified [given praise and honor, exalted]. word study 31 What then [in response to these things, as a consequence] shall we say [utter, speak] in response to these things [all these blessings, these truths]? If God [the supreme Deity, our Father] is for us [on our side, in our favor], who [what person, what power] can be against us [opposed to us, against our well-being]? word study 32 He who did not spare [treat leniently, hold back] His own [private, personal] Son [child, descendant] but gave Him up [delivered, surrendered] for us all [on behalf of all people], how will He not also, along with Him [together, in addition], freely give [grant, bestow] us all things [everything, every blessing]? word study 33 Who [which one, anyone] will bring any charge [accuse, lay a complaint] against God’s [of the one true deity] elect [chosen, select ones]? It is God [the Supreme Judge] who justifies [declares righteous, sets right]. word study 34 Who [which one, any accuser] is there to condemn [judge against, give a negative verdict] us? For Christ Jesus [the Anointed One, Messiah], who died [stopped living, was put to death], and more than that [rather, in addition to that] was raised [brought back to life, resurrected] to life, is at the right [place of honor, position of power] hand of God [the supreme Deity, Creator]—and He is interceding [pleading, making request] for us [on our behalf, in our favor]. word study 35 Who shall separate us [come between us, cause us to be divided] from the love [unconditional affection, divine agape] of Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah]? Shall trouble [tribulation, pressure] or distress [hardship, anguish] or persecution [being treated unfairly, harassed] or famine [hunger, lack of food] or nakedness [being without clothes, vulnerable] or danger [peril, risk] or sword [violence, deadly threat]? word study 36 As it is written [in the holy Scriptures]: “For Your sake [because of Your love and purpose] we face death [are put to death, experience mortal peril] all day long [every day, constantly]; we are considered [reckoned, regarded] as sheep [harmless, gentle creatures] to be slaughtered [butchered, destroyed].” word study 37 No, in [all these challenges and hardships] all these things we are more than [completely and utterly] conquerors [to conquer beyond, to gain a decisive victory] through [because of, by means of] Him [the One] who [out of His great love] loved [showed esteem and goodwill towards] us. word study 38 For I am convinced [fully persuaded, having faith] that neither death [physical or spiritual separation] nor life [physical and spiritual existence], neither angels [heavenly messengers] nor principalities [ruling powers, spiritual authorities], neither the present [current events, things at hand] nor the future [things to come, what is to ensue], nor any powers [miraculous abilities, spiritual forces], word study 39 neither [the highest or most exalted] height nor [the deepest or most profound] depth, nor anything else [any other creature or being] in all [the entirety of] creation, will be able to separate us from the [unconditional and eternal] love of God [the supreme deity] that is [dwelling and abiding] in Christ Jesus [the anointed Savior] our Lord [the supreme authority]. word study
