1 After this [following these events, subsequent to these things] I heard a sound [noise, voice] like the roar [loud voice, great cry] of a great multitude [large crowd, many people] in heaven [the spiritual realm, the sky], shouting: “Hallelujah [praise the Lord, alleluia]! Salvation [rescue, deliverance] and glory [honor, praise] and power [strength, authority] belong to our God [the Lord, the Almighty]! word study 2 For His judgments [true and righteous, just and fair] are true [genuine, authentic] and just [fair, innocent]. He has judged [condemned, punished] the great [large, intense] prostitute [harlot, immoral woman] who corrupted [destroyed, ruined] the earth [the land, the material world] with her immorality [sexual sin, fornication]. He has avenged [punished, vindicated] the blood [the atoning blood of Christ, kindred ties] of His servants [slaves, those subject to Him] that was poured out [shed, spilled] by her hand [power, instrument].” word study 3 And a [again] second time they called out: “Hallelujah [praise the Lord, alleluia]! Her smoke [rising from destruction] rises forever [for all eternity, to the ages of the ages] and ever [without end, perpetually].” word study 4 And the twenty-four [four and twenty, a complete and perfect number] elders [respected leaders, spiritual guides] and the four living creatures [beings with God-given life, divine messengers] fell down [prostrated themselves, knelt in reverence] and worshiped [paid homage, showed reverence and adoration] God [the one true deity, Creator of all] who sits [is seated, resides in power and authority] on the throne [the seat of divine power, judgment, and authority], saying: “Amen [so be it, a declaration of trust and faith], Hallelujah [praise the Lord, an exclamation of joy and adoration]!” word study 5 Then a voice [sound, noise] came from the throne [seat of power, authority], saying: “Praise [give thanks, worship] our God [the one true deity], all you who serve [are slaves to, obey] Him, and those who fear [reverence, are in awe of] Him, small [humble, lowly] and great [powerful, mighty] alike [together, equally]!” word study 6 And I heard a sound like the roar of a great multitude, like the rushing of many waters [a huge waterfall or a great river of rushing water], and like a mighty [strong, powerful] rumbling of thunder [loud thunderings], crying out: “Hallelujah [praise the Lord]! For the Lord [the Almighty, omnipotent God] our God [the supreme Creator, Elohim] the Almighty [all-powerful, having absolute power] reigns [rules, has authority]. word study 7 Let us rejoice [be glad and celebrate] and be glad [exceedingly happy] and give Him [as an act of worship] the glory [honor and praise]. For the marriage [wedding, union] of the Lamb [Jesus, the innocent and pure one] has come, and His bride [wife, the church] has made herself ready [prepared, made herself pure]. word study 8 She was given [granted, permitted] clothing of fine linen [luxurious fabric], bright [shining, radiant] and pure [clean, spotless].” For the fine linen [a luxurious fabric] she wears is the righteous acts [justifications, virtuous deeds] of the saints [holy ones, set apart believers]. word study 9 Then the angel told me to write, “Blessed [happy, supremely fortunate] are those who are invited [called, bidden] to the marriage supper [wedding feast, celebration] of the Lamb [Jesus, the innocent and pure one].” And he said to me, “These are the true [genuine, authentic] words [messages, declarations] of God [the one true deity].” word study 10 So I fell [prostrated myself, knelt down] at his feet to worship [show reverence, honor] him. But he told me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant [bondservant, slave] with you and your brothers [fellow believers, brethren] who rely on [hold, have] the testimony [witness, evidence] of Jesus [the Christ, God’s salvation]. Worship [bow down, adore] God! For the testimony [witness, declaration] of Jesus is the spirit [breath, essence] of prophecy [divine utterance, revelation].” word study 11 Then I saw [beheld, perceived] heaven [the spiritual realm, God’s throne] standing open [having been opened, revealed], and there before me was a white [pure, clean] horse [a large animal used for riding]. And its rider is called [named, known as] Faithful [trustworthy, reliable] and True [genuine, authentic]. With [in, characterized by] righteousness [uprightness, justice] He judges [evaluates, discerns] and wages [makes, engages in] war [conflict, battle]. word study 12 He has eyes [like a flame of fire, blazing intensely] like blazing fire, and many [numerous, abundant] royal crowns [diadems, symbols of sovereignty] on His head [the seat of authority, leadership]. He has a name [a character, authority, or title] written on Him [inscribed, recorded] that only [exclusively, alone] He Himself [personally, as the only one] knows [understands, is aware of]. word study 13 He is dressed in a robe [covered] dipped in blood [the atoning blood of Christ], and His name [character, authority] is The Word [Logos, divine Expression] of God [the one true deity]. word study 14 The armies [troops, heavenly forces] of heaven [the sky, God’s dwelling place], dressed in fine linen [luxurious, pure fabric], white [bright, clean] and pure [clean, morally upright], follow [accompany, obey] Him on white [spotless, radiant] horses [a large animal used for riding]. word study 15 And from His mouth [the source of His speech] proceeds a sharp [swift and piercing] sword [a long, broad sword] with which to strike down [to hit or knock] the nations [Gentiles or non-Jewish people], and He will rule them with an iron [made of iron] scepter [a staff or wand]. He treads [to trample or crush] the winepress [a trough or vat] of the fury [intense anger] of the wrath [God’s strong anger] of God [the one true deity] the Almighty [all-powerful]. word study 16 And He has a name [the divine Expression, His character] written on His robe [outer garment, cloak] and on His thigh: KING OF KINGS [sovereign ruler over all, having supreme authority] AND LORD OF LORDS [master over all, having divine power and control]. word study 17 Then I saw an angel [a heavenly messenger] standing in the sun [the radiant light of heaven], and he cried out in a loud [great, powerful] voice to all the birds [fowl, flying creatures] flying overhead, “Come [assemble], gather together for the great [magnificent, extraordinary] supper [feast, dinner] of God [the Almighty, the supreme Deity], word study 18 so that you may eat the flesh [of the slain, the bodies of the dead] of kings [sovereign rulers, monarchs] and commanders [military officers, leaders] and mighty men [strong, powerful warriors], of horses [large animals used for riding and transportation] and riders [those who sit on them, controlling their movement], of everyone [all people, without exception] slave [those bound to servitude, unfree] and free [unrestricted, having liberty], small [humble, lowly] and great [prominent, esteemed].” word study 19 Then I saw [beheld, perceived] the beast [wild animal] and the kings [rulers, sovereigns] of the earth [the world, earthly realm] with their armies [troops, military forces] assembled [gathered, brought together] to wage war [make battle, engage in conflict] against the One [He, the Messiah] seated [sitting, enthroned] on the horse [a large animal used for riding], and against His army [troops, followers]. word study 20 But the beast [a wild or dangerous animal] was captured along with the false prophet [a deceiver], who on its behalf had performed signs [miraculous events] deceiving those who had the mark [a mark or image] of the beast and worshiped [paid homage to] its image [a representation]. Both the beast and the false prophet were thrown alive [still living] into the fiery lake [a place of judgment] of burning sulfur [a burning stone]. word study 21 And the rest [remaining ones, those who were left] were killed [slain, destroyed] with the sword [a long, broad sword] that proceeded from the mouth [the source of speech and communication] of the One [He, the Lord] seated on the horse [a large animal used for riding]. And all [every, the entirety] the birds [small bird, birdling] gorged themselves [were filled, fed] on their flesh [physical body, the meat of an animal]. word study
