Luke 17
BSA1 Jesus said [spoke, declared] to His disciples, “It is [absolutely, utterly] inevitable [impossible to avoid, certain] that stumbling blocks [causes of sin, occasions of stumbling] will come, but woe [deep sorrow, utter calamity] to the one through [because of, on account of] whom they come [happen, occur]! word study 2 It would be better [more profitable, advantageous] for him to have a millstone [a huge stone] hung around his neck [a symbol of vulnerability] and to be thrown [cast, laid down] into the sea [a large body of water] than to cause [lead to sin] one of these little ones [small, humble] to stumble [fall into sin, be offended]. word study 3 Watch [be careful, take heed to] yourselves [your actions, your heart]. If your brother [fellow believer, male sibling] sins [misses the mark, falls short], rebuke [warn, say a sharp word to] him; and if he repents [changes his mind, feels sorry for his sin], forgive [release, let go of] him. word study 4 Even if he sins [commits a wrong, misses the mark] against you seven times [repeatedly, on multiple occasions] in a day [a 24-hour period, a cycle of time], and seven times returns [turns back, changes direction] to say [to speak, to express remorse], ‘I repent [change my mind, feel sorry for my actions],’ you must forgive [release, let go of] him [the one who has wronged you].” word study 5 The apostles [messengers of Jesus Christ] said to the Lord [Master, God], “Increase [add to, help us to have more] our faith [trust, confidence in God] [having God’s nature, trusting in you more strongly]!” word study 6 And the Lord [God, the supreme authority] answered, “If you have [possess, hold onto] faith [trust, confidence in God] the size of a [small] mustard seed, you can say [declare, command] to this mulberry tree [sycamine tree, a type of fig tree], ‘Be uprooted [plucked up by the root, completely removed] and planted [transplanted, rooted] in the sea [a large body of water],’ and it will obey [listen attentively, respond to] you. word study 7 Which of you [having a servant or slave] whose servant [or bondservant, one subject to another] comes in from [out of, originating from] plowing [tilling the soil, farming] or [as an alternative] shepherding [caring for, guiding] in the field [a rural area, countryside] will say to him, ‘Come [approach, draw near] at once [immediately, without delay] and sit down [recline, lean back] to eat’? word study 8 Instead, won’t he tell him, ‘Prepare [make ready, get everything set] my meal [supper, the main evening meal] and dress [gird, fasten your belt] yourself to serve [attend to my needs, minister to] me while I eat [dine, take my evening meal] and drink [take a beverage]; and afterward [after these things, when I am finished] you may eat [take your meal, dine] and drink’? word study 9 Does he thank [give praise to, show appreciation for] the servant [slave, bondservant] because he did [performed, carried out] what he was told [commanded, directed]? word study 10 So you also [likewise, in the same way], when you have done [accomplished, fulfilled] everything commanded [directed, ordered] of you, should say, ‘We are [consider ourselves] unworthy [unprofitable] servants [bondservants]; we have only done [performed, carried out] our duty [that which was our obligation to do].’” word study 11 While Jesus [the Messiah, Savior] was on His way [traveling, journeying] to Jerusalem [the holy city, capital of Israel], He was passing [traversing, going through] between [in the midst of, through the borders of] Samaria [a region of Palestine, formerly the northern kingdom of Israel] and Galilee [a region in northern Palestine, Jesus’ ministry area]. word study 12 As He entered [into a certain village, toward] one of the villages [a small town], He was met [encountered] by ten lepers [leprous men]. They stood [in an upright position] at a distance [afar off, from a remote place] word study 13 and raised their voices [lifted up], shouting [in loud voices], “Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation], Master [one in charge, commander] [Epistata], have mercy [show compassion, pity] on us [on me, on ourselves] [to feel sorry for someone]!” word study 14 When Jesus [the Messiah, the Savior] saw them, He said, “Go [depart, travel], show [exhibit, prove] yourselves [your healed condition] to the priests [spiritual leaders, mediators].” And as they were on their way [journeying, traveling], they were cleansed [purified, made whole, healed]. word study 15 When [a single individual] one of them saw [perceived, realized] that he was healed [made whole, restored to health], he came back [returned, turned back], praising [glorifying, giving thanks to] God [the Almighty, Creator] in a loud [great, strong] voice [sound, declaration]. word study 16 He fell [prostrated himself, collapsed] facedown [on his face, with his face to the ground] at Jesus’ feet [before Him, in His presence] in thanksgiving [giving thanks, expressing gratitude] to Him—and he was a [man from, belonging to] Samaritan [from the region of Samaria]. word study 17 “Were not [not at all, absolutely] all ten [a complete number, ten lepers] cleansed [made clean, purified]?” Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] asked [responded, answered]. “Where [in what place] then [at that time] are the other [remaining, additional] nine [a number less than ten]? word study 18 Was [none to be found] no one found except [save, but] this [the/this] foreigner [from another nation, non-Jewish] to return [turn back, come back] and give [bestow, grant] glory [honor, praise] to God [the one true deity]?” word study 19 Then Jesus said to him, “Rise [get up, stand] and go [travel, journey]; your faith [trust, confidence in God] has made you well [whole, saved, healed]! ” word study 20 When asked [demanded, questioned] by the Pharisees [a Jewish sect, strict religious leaders] when the kingdom [royal power, dominion] of God [the one true deity, Creator] would come [arrive, be established], Jesus replied, “The kingdom [God’s reign, sovereign rule] of God will not come [appear, be visible] with [accompanied by, marked by] observable signs [visible manifestations, outward appearances, observation]. word study 21 Nor [neither] will people say, ‘Look [behold], here [in this place] it is,’ or [as an alternative] ‘There [in that place] it is.’ For you see [perceive, understand], the kingdom [royal power, dominion] of God [the one true deity] is [exists, abides] in your midst [among you, within you]. ” word study 22 Then He said [at that time, afterwards] to the disciples [learners, followers], “The time [season, era] is coming [approaching, drawing near] when you will long [deeply desire, yearn] to see [behold, perceive] one [a single, specific] of the days [periods, times] of the Son [Child, descendant] of Man [humanity, a human], but you will not [never, under no circumstances] see [perceive, experience] it [that day, that time]. word study 23 People [or they, certain individuals] will tell you, ‘Look [see, behold], there [in that place] He is!’ or ‘Look [see, behold], here [in this place] He is!’ Do not [by no means] go out [depart] or chase after [pursue] them [those individuals, false messiahs]. word study 24 For just as [exactly like, in the same manner] the lightning [a bright, shining light] flashes and lights up the sky [the heavens, the atmosphere] from one end to the other, so will be the Son [the Messiah, the Christ] of Man [a human being, a descendant of Adam] in His day [a period of time, an era]. word study 25 But first [before all things, initially] He must suffer [experience pain, endure hardship] many things [much, a great amount] and be rejected [disapproved of, put on one side] by this [the current, present] generation [people living at the same time]. word study 26 Just as [in the same way, similarly] it was in the days [period of time, era] of Noah [the patriarch, a righteous man], so also [thus, in like manner] will it be in the days [time of judgment, era of the Messiah] of the Son [having a divine nature, the Messiah] of Man [a human, the ultimate representative of humanity]: word study 27 People were eating [consuming food, feasting] and drinking [swallowing liquids], marrying [wedding, giving in marriage] and being given in marriage [to marry off a daughter], up to the day [a 24-hour period, a specific time] Noah [the patriarch] entered [went into, to go into a place] the ark [a wooden box, the covenant]. Then the flood [a big overflow, deluge] came and destroyed [to lose completely, to perish] them all [every one, completely]. word study 28 It was the same [similarly, in a like manner] in the days [a 24-hour period, a period of time] of Lot [a patriarch, a righteous man]: People were eating [consuming food, to eat] and drinking [swallowing a liquid, to drink], buying [to purchase, acquiring] and selling [to exchange for money, to trade], planting [to set in the earth to grow, to cultivate] and building [to construct, to establish]. word study 29 But on the day [when the time arrived] Lot [the nephew of Abraham] left [went out, departed from] Sodom [a city of sin and destruction], fire [flames, divine judgment] and [also] sulfur [brimstone, a burning stone] rained down [came pouring, fell from above] from heaven [the sky, God’s dwelling place] and destroyed [completely ruined, lost] them all [every single one, the entire population]. word study 30 It will be just like that [in the same manner, similarly] on the day [a 24-hour period, a period of time] the Son [a son or child] of Man [a human being] is revealed [uncovered, disclosed]. word study 31 On that day [in that hour, at that specific time], let no one on the housetop [on the roof of the house] come down [go down, descend] to retrieve [take away, lift up] his possessions [goods, vessels]. Likewise [similarly, in a like manner], let no one in the field [in the countryside, on the farm] return [turn back, revert] for anything [any of his belongings, what he has left behind] he has left behind [what is behind, his remaining possessions]. word study 32 Remember [keep in mind, bring to memory] Lot’s [the patriarch, nephew of Abraham] wife [the woman, who was a married partner]! word study 33 Whoever tries [seeks, attempts] to save [preserve, rescue] his life [soul] will lose [destroy] it, but whoever loses [gives up] his life [soul] will preserve [give life] it. word study 34 I tell you [declare to you, say unto you], on that night [in the darkness, at that time] two people [men, individuals] will be in one bed [on one couch, together]: One will be taken [received, removed] and the other [different one, another] left [behind, remaining]. word study 35 Two [a pair] women will be grinding [to crush into flour] grain together [in the same place, simultaneously]: One [a single individual] will be taken [to receive or seize] and the other [a different one] left [to release or abandon].” word study 37 “Where, Lord [a title of respect and authority]?” they asked. Jesus answered, “Wherever [in every place, wherever it may be] there is a carcass [a dead body], there the vultures [eagles, birds of prey] will gather [come together, assemble].” word study
