Job 41
BSA1 “Can you [draw out] pull in Leviathan [a massive sea creature] with a [fish] hook or tie down [press down, fasten] his tongue with a [cord] rope? word study 2 Can you put a cord [rope, thread] through his nose [nostrils] or pierce his jaw [with a thorn, bore through] with a hook [thorn, fishing hook]? word study 3 Will he [make many supplications, plead repeatedly] beg you for mercy [compassion, forgiveness] or speak to you softly [with tender words, in a gentle tone]? word study 4 Will he make [form, establish] a covenant [agreement, pact] with you to take [capture, seize] him as a slave [servant, bondservant] for life [ever, age-during]? word study 5 Can you [play with, make sport with] pet him like a [tame, pet] bird or put him on a leash [bridle] for your maidens [servant girls, damsels]? word study 6 Will traders [or companions, fishermen, or merchants] barter [make a banquet, traffic, or try to buy] for him or divide [part, cut up, or sell] him among the merchants [or trading partners]? word study 7 Can you fill his [thick, protective] hide with [sharp, barbed] harpoons or his [strong, mighty] head with [fish, spear-like] fishing spears? word study 8 If you lay [place or put] a hand [your power or control] on him, you will remember [recall or think about] the battle and never repeat [do again or reattempt] it [the challenge or confrontation]! word study 9 Surely hope [expectation, confidence] of overcoming [subduing, capturing] him is false [in vain, a lie]. Is not the sight [glimpse, appearance] of him [this creature, a monster] overwhelming [fearsome, terrifying, casting one down]? word study 10 No one is so fierce [extremely powerful, daring] as to rouse [provoke, awaken] Leviathan [a monstrous sea creature]. Then who is able [has the strength, courage] to stand [resist, withstand] against Me [in My presence, before My power]? word study 11 Who [first, initially] has given to Me [as a gift, with no obligation] that I should repay [make restitution, give back] him? Everything [all things, whatsoever is] under heaven [the sky, the universe] is Mine [belongs to Me, my possession]. word study 12 I cannot keep silent [hold back, remain quiet] about his limbs [parts, body], his power [mighty strength, comely proportion] and [his] graceful form [goodly frame, well-formed body]. word study 13 Who can strip off his outer coat [or discover the face of his garment, his double bridle, or inner coat of iron]? Who can approach him [come to him, come within his jaws, or penetrate his double coat of armor] with a bridle [his double bridle]? word study 14 Who can open his jaws [doors of his face], ringed by his [terrible] fearsome teeth [which inspire terror, dismay]? word study 15 His rows [strong ones, tightly sealed] of scales [plates, shields] are his pride [strength, honor], tightly [shut up together, closed] sealed together [as with a close seal, like a stamp]. word study 16 One scale [is so close together, with the result that not even air can get between them] is so near [in close proximity, tightly packed] to another [adjacent, one after the other] that no air [breath, wind] can pass [come, enter] between them [in the space, gap]. word study 17 They are joined [closely attached, stuck together] to one another; they clasp [lock together, adhere] and cannot [in no way, it is impossible] be separated [sundered, parted]. word study 18 His snorting [sneezings, flashes forth] flashes with light [shine, sparkle], and his eyes [like the eyelids of the morning, red like the rising sun] are like the rays [eyelids] of dawn [morning]. word study 19 Firebrands [burning torches, flames] stream from his mouth; fiery [burning, blazing] sparks [sparks of fire, flames] shoot forth [leap out, dart forth]! word study 20 Smoke [like steam from a kettle] billows from his nostrils [as out of a seething pot] as from a boiling [over a fire of reeds, blazing] pot [or caldron] over burning [dry] reeds. word study 21 His breath [kindleth, sets fire to] sets coals [charcoal, dry fuel] ablaze [on fire, burning intensely], and flames [fire] pour [go forth, issue] from his mouth [the opening of his jaws]. word study 22 Strength [power, might] resides in his neck [the source of his power, underneath], and dismay [terror, fear] leaps [dances, spreads] before him [in his presence, upon his approach]. word study 23 The folds [flakes, plates] of his flesh are tightly [firmly, closely] joined; they are [remain, stand] firm [solid, dense] and [completely, utterly] immovable [cannot be moved, unshakeable]. word study 24 His chest [heart, inner being] is as hard [firm, strong] as a rock [stone, unyielding], as hard [firm, unshakeable] as a lower [nether, bottom] millstone [grinding stone, crushing device]! word study 25 When Leviathan [a monstrous sea creature] rises up [gets ready for the fight, raiseth himself], the mighty [strong, powerful] are terrified [afraid, shattered by terror]; they withdraw [retreat, keep themselves free] before his thrashing [breakings, consternation]. word study 26 The sword [or any sharp weapon] that reaches him has no effect [cannot prevail], nor does the spear [or pointed shaft] or dart [or javelin] or arrow [or any projectile]. word study 28 No arrow [projectile, dart] can make him flee [run away]; slingstones [stones from slingshots, projectiles] become like chaff [dry stems, stubble] to him. word study 29 A club [a thick stick] is regarded as straw [stubble, grass], and he laughs [makes sport, scoffs] at the sound [the rushing, the shaking] of the lance [spear, javelin]. word study 30 His undersides are jagged potsherds [sharp stones, broken pottery], spreading out [leaving a trail, dragging] the mud [mire, wet earth] like a threshing sledge [threshing-wain, grain-crushing instrument]. word study 32 He leaves a glistening [shining, radiant] wake behind him; one would think [imagine, suppose] the deep [sea, abyss] had white hair [to be hoary, to be gray]! word study 33 Nothing [no creature, no being] on earth is his equal— a creature [being, creation] devoid [lacking, without] of fear! word study 34 He looks down on all the haughty [proud, arrogant]; he is king over all the proud [children of pride, sons of pride].” word study
