Job 2
BSA1 On another day [a certain day, a specific time] the sons [children, descendants] of God [Elohim, the supreme Being] came to present [stand, station] themselves before the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], and Satan [the Adversary, opponent of God] also came with them [among them, in their midst] to present [stand, station] himself before Him [Yehovah]. word study 2 “Where [in what location, from what place] have you come from?” said the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] to Satan [the arch-enemy of good, adversary]. “From roaming [going to and fro, traveling] through the earth [the land, the material world],” he replied, “and walking [going, moving] back and forth [up and down, to and fro] in it [the earth, the land].” word study 3 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said to Satan [the arch-enemy of good], “Have you considered [reflected on, thought about] My servant [one who serves, a bondservant] Job? For there is no one [none, nothing] on earth [the land, the world] like him, a man [an individual, a person] who is blameless [without fault, perfect] and upright [just, righteous], who fears [reveres, respects] God [Elohim, the supreme God] and shuns [turns away from, avoids] evil [bad, morally wrong]. He still [continues, remains] retains his integrity [moral purity, innocence], even though you incited [stimulated, enticed] Me against him to ruin [destroy, swallow up] him without cause [for no reason, in vain].” word study 4 “Skin [human or animal hide] for skin [a life for a life]!” Satan [the arch-enemy of good] replied. “A man [a male person, an individual] will give up [surrender, yield] all he owns [everything, his entire possessions] in exchange for [as a trade, to save] his life [his soul, his very existence]. word study 5 But [however, in contrast] stretch out Your hand [with power and direction] and strike his flesh [body, person] and bones [substance, essence], and he will surely [without a doubt, certainly] curse [renounce, blaspheme] You to Your face [presence, before You].” word study 6 “Very well,” said the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] to Satan [the arch-enemy of good]. “He is in your hands [in your power, under your control], but you must spare [keep, protect] his life [soul, living being].” word study 7 So Satan [the arch-enemy of good, adversary] went out from the presence [face, before] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] and infected Job [with a severe affliction] with terrible [bad, evil] boils [sore, inflamed spots] from the soles [palm, underside] of his feet [the bottom of his foot] to the crown [top, scalp] of his head [the upper part of the head]. word study 8 And Job took [picked up, grasped] a piece of broken [shattered, fragmented] pottery [earthenware, clay vessel] to scrape [scratch, rub] himself [his skin, his body] as he sat [dwelled, remained] among [in the midst of, surrounded by] the ashes [worthless remains, dust]. word study 9 Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still [continue to maintain, hold fast to] retain your integrity [moral purity, uprightness, innocence]? Curse [renounce, blaspheme] God [Elohim, the supreme Creator] and die [put an end to yourself, perish]!” word study 10 “You speak as a foolish [one of the foolish women] woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God [the supreme Creator, Elohim] only good [pleasant, beneficial] and not adversity [evil, affliction]?” In all [everything, every circumstance] this, Job did not sin [miss the mark, go wrong] in what he said [with his lips, language]. word study 11 Now when Job’s three [a specific quantity] friends [companions or neighbors]—Eliphaz the Temanite [a descendant of Teman], Bildad the Shuhite [from the family of Shuach], and Zophar the Naamathite [from Naamah, a place of pleasantness]—heard [to hear and listen, implying attention and obedience] about all [everything] this adversity [evil or affliction] that had come [to go or come] upon him, each of them came from his home [a place or location], and they met together [in unity] to go and sympathize [to wander, showing grief or sympathy] with Job and comfort [to show pity or sympathy] him. word study 12 When they lifted up their eyes from afar [from a distance, afar off], they could [hardly] barely recognize Job [because of the change in him]. They began to weep [loudly, with bitter weeping] aloud, and each man tore [rent] his robe [outer garment] and threw dust [dry earth] in the air over his head [toward heaven, toward the sky]. word study 13 Then they sat [dwelt, remained] on the ground [land, earth] with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke [communicated, uttered] a word to him because they saw [perceived, observed] how intense [very great, exceedingly] his suffering [pain, grief, hardship] was [existed, had being]. word study
