John 6
BSA1 After [following, in the course of time] this, Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] crossed [went away, departed] to the other side [beyond, to the opposite shore] of the Sea [a large body of water] of Galilee [a region in Palestine where Jesus ministered] (that is [also known as], the Sea of Tiberias [a city in Galilee, near a big lake with the same name]). word study 2 A large [great, multitude of] crowd followed Him [as His disciples] because they saw [beheld, perceived] the signs [miracles, supernatural works] He was performing [doing, making] on the sick [those who were diseased, weak, or feeble]. word study 3 Then [at that time, next] Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] went up [ascended, to a higher place] on the mountain [a high elevation, a place of spiritual encounter] and sat down [was seated, to rest and teach] with [among, in companionship with] His disciples [learners, followers]. word study 4 Now the Jewish [a feast of the Jews, a festival] Feast of the Passover [the Passover lamb, commemorating Israel’s escape] was [at hand, approaching] near [close to, imminent]. word study 5 When Jesus [lifting up his eyes, having a vision] looked up and saw a large [great, multitude] crowd [a large group of people, a gathering] coming toward Him, He said to Philip [one of His disciples, a follower], “Where can we buy [purchase, acquire] bread [food, nourishment] for these people [the crowd, the multitude] to eat [to nourish themselves, to be satisfied]?” word study 6 But He was asking [to test, to prove] this to test [try, tempt] him, for [because, since] He knew [was aware, had perception] what He was about [going to, intending to] to do [perform, accomplish]. word study 7 Philip [the apostle, a disciple of Jesus] answered, “Two hundred denarii [a day’s wage] would not buy enough [sufficient, adequate] bread [food, nourishment] for each [every individual, one by one] of them to have a small [little, brief] piece [portion, fragment].” word study 8 One [a certain, specific] of His disciples [learners, followers], Andrew [manly, courageous], Simon Peter’s [the rock, a key apostle] brother [male sibling, fellow believer], said [spoke, uttered words] to Him [Jesus, the Master], word study 9 “Here is a boy [a young lad] with five [a specific number] barley [a type of grain] loaves [bread or food] and two [a small number] small fish [a common food source]. But [in contrast] what difference will these [these specific things] make among [toward or into] so many [a large crowd]?” word study 10 “Have the people [all the crowd, everybody] sit down,” Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] said. Now there was plenty [much, a large amount] of grass [herbage, a place for pasture] in that place, so the men [adult males, husbands] sat down, about five thousand [a large number, approximately 5000] of them. word study 11 Then Jesus [the Messiah, God’s salvation] took the loaves [bread, food] and the fish [a common food source], gave thanks [expressing gratitude, praising God], and distributed [shared, handed out] to those who were seated [reclining, at rest] as much as they wanted [desired, were willing to receive]. word study 12 And when everyone was [completely] full [satisfied, had enough], He said to His disciples [learners, followers], “Gather [collect, assemble] the pieces [fragments, broken bits] that are left over [remaining, exceeding], so that nothing [not one thing] will be [is lost, destroyed] wasted.” word study 13 So they collected [gathered together, assembled] them and filled twelve [a dozen] baskets with the pieces [fragments, broken bits] of the five [the number of humility] barley [thin, coarse] loaves [bread, food] left over [remaining, exceeding] by those who had eaten [consumed, partaken]. word study 14 When the people [those men, having seen the miracle] saw the sign [a supernatural indication, token of God’s power] that Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] had performed [done, made, or caused something to happen], they began to say, “Truly [surely, of a truth] this is the Prophet [one who acts as an interpreter of God’s will, a messenger] who is to come [to arrive, to appear] into the world [the orderly arrangement of God’s creation, the earth and its inhabitants].” word study 15 Then Jesus [realizing their intentions, perceiving], realizing that they were about to come [and take him by force] and make Him [their sovereign ruler] king by force, withdrew [departed, left them] again to a mountain [a high elevation, a place of solitude] by Himself [alone, unaccompanied]. word study 16 When [as the day came to a close, at the time of] evening [nightfall, the end of the day] came, His [belonging to Him, the Messiah’s] disciples [learners, followers] went down [came or went down, descended] to the [large body of water, the lake] sea [the Mediterranean], word study 17 got into [climbed into, stepped into] a boat [ship, vessel], and started across [began to cross, went over] the sea [large body of water] to [toward, in the direction of] Capernaum [a town in Palestine]. It was already [now, at this time] dark [darkness, lack of light], and Jesus [the Messiah, God’s salvation] had not yet [already, even now] gone out [come, arrived] to them [with them, among them]. word study 18 A strong [great, intense] wind [a powerful gust] was blowing [to blow, breathe hard], and the sea [a large body of water] grew [was being raised, arose] agitated [rough, turbulent, to arouse]. word study 19 When they had rowed [about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, three or four miles] about three or four miles, they saw Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] approaching the boat, walking [to walk or live in a certain way] on the sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water]—and they were [filled with awe, to fear] terrified [in reverence or alarm]. word study 20 But Jesus [the Messiah, Christ] spoke up: “It is I [I am, the existing One]; do not [lest you] be afraid [have reverence or awe].” word study 21 Then they were willing [to desire, intentionally chose] to take Him [into their company, receive] into the boat [ship, vessel], and at once [immediately, without delay] the boat [ship, vessel] reached the shore [land, destination] where they were heading [going, on their way to]. word study 22 The next day [following day, day after], the crowd [large group of people, multitude] that had remained [stood, stayed] on the other side [opposite side, across] of the sea [large body of water] realized [saw, understood] that only one boat [small vessel, ship] had been there, and that Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] had not boarded [entered, gone into] it with His disciples [learners, followers], but they had gone away [departed, left] alone [by themselves, solitary]. word study 23 However, some [other, different] boats [small vessels] from Tiberias [a city in Galilee] landed near [close to] the place [location] where the people had eaten [consumed] the bread [food] after the Lord [God, Master] had given thanks [expressed gratitude, blessed]. word study 24 So when [at that specific point in time] the crowd [a large group of people, a multitude] saw that neither Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] nor His disciples [learners, pupils, followers] were there [in that place, absent], they got into the boats [vessels for traveling on water] and went to Capernaum [a town in Palestine, an important center of Jesus’ ministry] to look for [seek, search, try to find] Him [the Messiah, the Son of God]. word study 25 When [and then, at that time] they found Him [discovered, came upon] on the other side [opposite shore, farther bank] of the sea [large body of water, lake], they asked Him, “Rabbi [my master, teacher], when [at what time, how long] did You get [come, arrive] here [to this place, in this location]?” word study 26 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly [verily, I assure you], I tell you, it is not because you saw these [miraculous] signs [indications of God’s power] that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves [bread, food] and had your fill [were satisfied, fed]. word study 27 Do not [labor, work diligently] work for food [meat, sustenance] that perishes [is destroyed, spoils], but for food [nourishment, spiritual bread] that endures [remains, lasts] to eternal [everlasting, age-during] life, which the Son [the divine Son] of Man [a human, the Messiah] will give [bestow, grant] you. For on Him God [the supreme Deity] the Father [the heavenly Parent] has placed [sealed, stamped] His seal [a mark of approval] of approval [authentication, confirmation].” word study 28 Then they inquired [asked, said to him], “What must we do [that we may work] to [in order to, so that we can] perform [work, labor] the works [deeds, acts] of God [the one true deity, Creator]?” word study 29 Jesus replied, “The work [labor, occupation] of God [the supreme Deity] is this: to believe [trust, have faith] in the One [He, the Messiah] He has sent [dispatched, commissioned].” word study 30 So they asked Him, “What sign [miracle, supernatural token] then will You perform [do, work, show], so that we may see [perceive, behold] it and believe [trust, have faith] You? What will You do [work, accomplish, bring about]? word study 31 Our fathers [ancestors, forefathers] ate the manna [a special food from God] in the wilderness [a deserted, barren land], as it is written: ‘He gave them bread [food, sustenance] from heaven [the spiritual realm, God’s dwelling place] to eat [nourish themselves, satisfy their hunger].’ ” word study 32 Jesus [the Messiah, God’s salvation] said to them, “Truly, truly [verily, I assure you], I tell you, it was not Moses [the Hebrew lawgiver] who gave you the bread [food, sustenance] from heaven [the sky, God’s dwelling place], but it is My Father [the Creator, God Almighty] who gives you the true [genuine, authentic] bread [spiritual nourishment] from heaven [the realm of God’s presence]. word study 33 For the bread [food, nourishment] of God [the one true deity] is He [the Messiah, Jesus] who comes down [descends, falls] from heaven [the sky, God’s dwelling place] and gives [bestows, grants] life [eternal, spiritual existence] to the world [mankind, creation].” word study 34 “Sir [Lord, Master],” they said, “give [bestow, grant] us this [specific, life-giving] bread [food, nourishment] at all times [always, continually, evermore].” word study 35 Jesus answered, “I [the Messiah, God’s salvation] am the bread [sustenance, spiritual nourishment] of life [eternal, spiritual existence]. Whoever comes [draws near, approaches] to Me will never hunger [feel a strong need, crave], and whoever believes [trusts, has faith] in Me will never thirst [have a deep desire, long for]. word study 36 But [in contrast, as I previously stated] as I stated, you have seen [perceived, experienced] Me [the Messiah, Jesus Christ] and still [even after witnessing my miracles] you do not [completely reject, refuse to] believe [trust, have faith in]. word study 37 Everyone [all, every single one] the Father [the heavenly Parent, divine Source] gives [bestows, entrusts] Me will come [arrive, be present] to Me, and the one who comes [approaches, draws near] to Me I will never [in no way, under no circumstances] drive away [expel, reject, cast out]. word study 38 For I have come down [from the heavenly realm, out of the sky] from heaven [the dwelling place of God], not to do My own will [desire, intention], but to do the will [purpose, desire] of Him [the Father, God] who sent [commissioned, appointed] Me. word study 39 And this [specific, divine plan] is the will [desire, intention] of Him who sent [appointed, commissioned] Me, that I shall lose [destroy, perish] none [not one, nothing] of those He has given [entrusted, bestowed] Me, but raise [resurrect, bring to life] them up at the [final, ultimate] last day [time of judgment, eternity]. word study 40 For it is My Father’s [divine will, sovereign plan] will that everyone who looks [sees, gazes, beholds] to the Son [the Messiah, God’s Anointed] and believes [trusts, has faith] in Him shall have [possess, experience] eternal [everlasting, age-during] life, and I will raise [resurrect, bring to life] him up at the [final] last day [the day of judgment, the end of time].” word study 41 At this, the Jews [the Jewish leaders, people of Judah] began to grumble [murmur, complain] about Jesus because He had said, “I [the first person singular] am the bread [food, nourishment] that came down [descended] from heaven [the sky, God’s home].” word study 42 They were asking, “Is this not Jesus [the son of God, the Messiah], the son [a child, an heir] of Joseph, whose father [a male parent, a guardian] and mother [a female parent, a nurturer] we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down [descended, been sent] from heaven [the spiritual realm, the dwelling place of God]?’” word study 43 “Stop [cease, do not] grumbling [murmuring, complaining] among [with, towards] yourselves [one another],” Jesus [Joshua, God is salvation] replied [answered, responded]. word study 44 “No one [none, nobody] can come to Me unless the Father [the supreme Parent, divine Source] who sent Me [dispatched, commissioned] draws [attracts, persuades] him, and I will raise [resurrect, bring to life] him up at the [final, ultimate] last day [the day of judgment, eternity]. word study 45 It is written [recorded, inscribed] in the Prophets [the writings of the prophets, God’s messengers]: ‘And they will all [every person, everyone] be taught [instructed, guided] by God [the Father, the Almighty].’ Everyone [each person, all who have heard] who has heard [listened to, learned from] the Father [God, the Creator] and learned [received knowledge, understood] from Him comes [draws near, approaches] to Me— word study 46 not that anyone [no human, no person] has seen the Father [the supreme Creator, God] except the One [he who is from God, the divine Son] who is from [originating with, sent by] God; only He [the Son, the Messiah] has seen the Father [in His divine nature, as God]. word study 47 Truly [verily, with utmost certainty], truly [again for emphasis], I tell you [declare to you, say unto you], he who believes [has faith in, trusts in] has [possesses, holds] eternal [everlasting, age-during] life [existence, spiritual vitality]. word study 48 I [the Messiah, the Son of God] am the bread [food for spiritual nourishment, sustenance] of life [eternal existence, spiritual vitality]. word study 49 Your [ancestors, forefathers] fathers [male parents, patriarchs] ate [consumed, devoured] the manna [a special food, heavenly bread] in [within, during the time of] the wilderness [desert, deserted place], yet [nevertheless, nonetheless] they died [passed away, ceased to live]. word study 50 This [specific, referring to Jesus] is the bread [food, nourishment] that comes down [from above, out of] from heaven [the spiritual realm, God’s dwelling], so that anyone [a person, someone] may eat [partake, consume] of it [this bread, spiritual nourishment] and not [never, under no circumstances] die [stop living, perish spiritually]. word study 51 I am the living [life-giving, spiritual] bread that came down [from above, out of] from heaven. If anyone eats [partakes, consumes] of this bread, he will live [have eternal life, exist forever] forever. And this bread, which I will give [sacrifice, offer] for the life [eternal existence, spiritual well-being] of the world [mankind, humanity], is My flesh [physical body, human nature].” word study 52 At this, the Jews [from Judah, Jewish leaders] began to argue [quarrel, strive] among themselves, “How [in what way, by what means] can this man [Jesus, the Messiah] give us [to bestow upon us, grant to us] His flesh [physical body, human nature] to eat [to consume, to partake of]?” word study 53 So Jesus [the Son of God, the Messiah] said to them, “Truly, truly [verily, I assure you], I tell you, unless you eat [consume, partake of] the flesh [the physical body] and drink [swallow, ingest] the blood [the life-giving fluid, aima] of the Son of Man [the Messiah, the representative of humanity], you have [possess, hold] no [none, absolutely no] life [spiritual existence] in you [within yourselves, in your inner being]. word study 54 Whoever [he who partakes] eats My flesh [the physical body, human nature] and drinks [swallows, takes in] My blood [the atoning blood of Christ, life-giving sacrifice] has [possesses, holds] eternal [lasting forever, age-during] life [spiritual existence, divine nature], and I will raise [cause to stand up, resurrect] him up at the last [final, utmost] day [a 24-hour period, a period of judgment]. word study 55 For My [truly, real] flesh [the physical body] is real [true, spiritual] food [nourishment], and My [truly, real] blood [the atoning blood of Christ] is real [true, spiritual] drink [consuming a liquid]. word study 56 Whoever [he that, the one who] eats [consumes, gnaws on] My flesh [physical body, human nature] and drinks [swallows, partakes of] My blood [the atoning blood, life-giving fluid] remains [dwells, abides] in Me, and I [Myself, personally] in him [with him, among them]. word study 57 Just as [in the same manner, similarly] the living [having life, full of vitality] Father [the male parent, the Creator] sent [dispatched, commissioned] Me and I live [have life, exist] because of [through, by means of] the Father, so also [in the same way, likewise] the one who feeds on [eats, consumes] Me will live [have life, be alive] because of [through, by means of] Me. word study 58 This is the bread [true food, spiritual nourishment] that came down [from above, out of] from heaven [the realm of God’s presence]. Unlike your fathers [ancestors, forefathers], who ate the manna [divine provision, supernatural food] and died [passed away, perished], the one who eats [partakes of, feeds on] this bread [living bread, bread of life] will live [have eternal life, be alive forever] forever [for all eternity, into the age to come].” word study 59 Jesus said [these things, as he taught] this while teaching [in a synagogue, the Jewish meeting place] in [the town of] the synagogue in Capernaum [a city in Palestine, an important center of Jesus’ ministry]. word study 60 On hearing [to listen and understand] it, many [a large number, a multitude] of His disciples [learners, followers] said, “This [this particular teaching] is a difficult [hard, harsh] teaching [message, word]. Who [which one, what person] can accept [hear and obey, receive] it [this doctrine, this truth]?” word study 61 Aware [having spiritual insight, perceiving] that His disciples [learners, followers] were grumbling [murmuring, complaining] about this teaching [instruction, doctrine], Jesus [God is salvation] asked them, “Does this [offense, stumbling block] offend [cause to stumble, shock] you [as individuals, personally]? word study 62 Then [at that time, therefore] what will happen [occur, take place] if you see [behold, experience] the Son [a child or descendant] of Man [a human being] ascend [going up, rising] to where [in what place] He was [existed] before [previously, in a former time]? word study 63 The Spirit [giving life, breath] gives life; the flesh [physical body, human nature] profits nothing [is of no value, has no benefit]. The words [declarations, utterances] I have spoken to you are spirit [the vital principle, divine breath] and they are life [eternal existence, spiritual vitality]. word study 64 However, there are some of you [certain ones among you] who do not believe [have no faith, trust not].” (For Jesus [the Messiah, God’s Son] had known from the beginning [from the very start, the origin] which of them did not believe [were unbelieving, lacked trust] and who would betray [deliver, hand over] Him.) word study 65 Then Jesus said, “This [specific reason, this particular thing] is why I told you that no one [none, nobody] can come to Me [to be with me, to follow me] unless [if not, except] the Father [my Father, the heavenly Father] has granted [given, bestowed] it to him [to that person, to him alone].” word study 66 From [that specific point in time, after this event] that time on many [a large number, a multitude] of His disciples [followers, learners] turned back [went away, departed] and no longer [not anymore, ceased to] walked [followed, lived] with Him [in His company, as His followers]. word study 67 So Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] asked the Twelve [twelve apostles, a dozen disciples], “Do you [as his followers] want to leave [depart, go away] too [also, as well]?” word study 68 Simon Peter [the rock, Jesus’ apostle] replied, “Lord [Master, God, the supreme authority], to whom [which one, what person] would we go? You have [possess, hold] the words [declarations, utterances] of eternal [lasting forever, age-during] life [physical and spiritual existence, divine nature]. word study 69 We [as disciples, followers] believe [have faith, trust] and know [are certain, have understanding] that You [Jesus, the Messiah] are [exist, have being] the Holy One [set apart, sacred] of God [the Father, Creator]. ” word study 70 Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] answered them, “Have I [the speaker, emphasizing His role] not chosen [selected, picked out] you, the Twelve [a dozen, a complete group]? Yet one [a single individual, a unity] of you is a devil [a false accuser, Satan, the adversary]!” word study 71 He was speaking [to say, share teachings] about Judas [the son of Simon Iscariot], the son of Simon [a Greek name, possibly meaning’hearing’] Iscariot [from Kerioth, a village]. For although Judas was one [a single, unified individual] of the Twelve [a dozen, a complete group of apostles], he was later [to ensue, about to happen] to betray [to deliver, surrender] Jesus [the Messiah, Savior]. word study
