1 “I have told [spoken, uttered words] you these things [referring to my previous teachings] so that [in order that, to] you will not [lest, God forbid] fall away [be caused to stumble, offended, scandalized, doubt]. word study 2 They will put you out of the synagogues [excommunicate you, not allow you to worship]. In fact, a time [hour, specific moment] is coming when anyone who kills [destroys, takes the life of] you will think [suppose, have the opinion] he is offering [providing, bringing] a service [ministry, act of worship] to God [the one true deity]. word study 3 They will do [carry out, perform] these things [actions, deeds] because they have not known [recognized, understood] the Father [the Creator, Almighty God] or Me [the Son, Jesus Christ, the Messiah]. word study 4 But I have told you these things [so that you may be prepared, in order that] so that when their hour [of trial, of suffering] comes, you will remember [recall, bring to mind] that I told you about them [warned you, spoke to you]. I did not tell you these things [reveal, speak] from the beginning [at the start, from the first], because I was with you [among you, in your presence]. word study 5 Now [at this present time, in this current situation], however, I am going [departing, to leave] to Him [the Father, the one] who sent [appointed, commissioned] Me; yet none [no one, nobody] of you asks [requests, inquires of] Me, ‘Where [to what place, in what direction] are You going [proceeding, to depart]?’ word study 6 Instead [on the contrary, but], your hearts [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions] are filled [completely satisfied, made full] with sorrow [grief, deep sadness] because [since, for the reason that] I have told [spoken, uttered words] you these things [this message, these truths]. word study 7 But I tell you the truth [the reality of the matter], it is for your benefit [to your advantage, expedient] that I am going away [departing, leaving]. Unless I go away [depart, leave], the Advocate [Counsellor, Comforter, Helper] will not come to you [will not arrive, will not be present]; but if I go [depart, leave], I will send Him [the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete] to you [to be with you, to guide you]. word study 8 And when He comes [to arrive, to appear], He will convict [reprove, show fault] the world [of humanity, the earthly realm] in regard to sin [missing the mark, rebellion against God] and righteousness [living according to God’s will, being in right standing] and judgment [divine verdict, decision of God]: word study 9 in regard to [about, concerning] sin [missing the mark, falling short of God’s standards], because they do not [completely, utterly] believe [trust, have faith] in Me [toward, into, with faith directed at]; word study 10 in regard to [concerning, about] righteousness [living according to God’s will, being just], because I am going [to depart, to leave] to the Father [my heavenly Father, the one who sent me] and you will no longer [not anymore, never again] see Me [perceive, experience my presence]; word study 11 and in regard to [concerning, about] judgment [divine verdict, condemnation], because the [ruler, leader] prince [chief] of this [the present, earthly] world [orderly arrangement] has been [already, previously] condemned [judged, punished]. word study 12 I still [continue to have, possess] have much [many things, a great amount] to tell [say, speak, share teachings] you, but [yet, however] you cannot [are not able, lack the strength] yet [at this moment, now] bear [carry, lift, endure] to hear [listen to, receive] it [these things, this truth]. word study 13 However, when [at the appointed time, whenever] the Spirit [the vital principle] of truth [reality and authenticity] comes, He will guide [lead and direct] you into all [every aspect of] truth [the reality of a matter]. For He will not speak [utter words] on His own [from Himself], but He will speak [declare and proclaim] what He hears [listens and obeys], and He will declare [report and announce] to you what is to come [the things that are coming]. word study 14 He [that one] will glorify [give praise and honor to] Me by taking [receive] from what is Mine [my own] and disclosing [report, announce] it to you [directly]. word study 15 Everything [all things, whatsoever] that belongs to the Father [the male parent, God] is Mine [my possession, what I have]. That is why I said [declared, spoke] that the Spirit [the Holy Spirit, the divine Helper] will take [receive, accept] from what is Mine [my possession, what I have] and disclose [reveal, show] it to you [to your understanding, for your benefit]. word study 16 In a [short, brief] little while you will see Me [no longer, not at all] no more, and then after a little [small] while you will see Me [again, once more].” word study 17 Then some of His disciples [among themselves, privately] asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while [a short time, briefly] you will not see Me, and then after a little while [a brief period, soon] you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going [departing, on My way] to the Father’?” word study 18 They kept asking [repeatedly, one to another], “Why is He saying [to speak, to utter words], ‘a little while’ [a short time, a brief period]? We do not understand [to perceive, to see spiritually] what He is saying [to speak, to communicate].” word study 19 Aware [perceiving, knowing] that they wanted [desired, had a mind to ask] to question Him, Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] said to them, “Are you asking [inquiring, seeking to understand] one another [among yourselves, mutually] why I said, ‘In a little while [a short time, briefly] you will not see [perceive, experience] Me, and then after a little while [again, a short time later] you will see [behold, have a vision of] Me’? word study 20 Truly, truly [verily, I assure you], I tell you, you will weep [lament, mourn] and wail [cry out in sorrow] while the world [the earthly realm] rejoices [feels happy, is glad]. You will grieve [be sorrowful, experience sadness], but your grief [deep sorrow, emotional pain] will turn to joy [happiness, delight]. word study 21 A woman [in labor, about to give birth] has pain [sorrow, grief] in childbirth [travail, the process of giving birth] because her time [hour, appointed moment] has come; but when she brings forth [gives birth to, delivers] her child [baby, offspring], she forgets [no longer remembers, is no longer aware of] her anguish [pressure, tribulation] because of her joy [deep and lasting happiness] that a child [human being, a person] has been born [brought into existence, come into the world] into the world [the earthly realm, the cosmos]. word study 22 So also you [as my disciples] have sorrow [grief, sadness] now, but I will see [meet with, encounter] you again [at my return, in the future] and your hearts [your inner being, spirit] will rejoice [be filled with joy, gladness], and no one [none, nobody] will take away [remove, steal] your joy [deep happiness, delight]. word study 23 In that day [when I am glorified, at the appointed time] you will no longer ask Me anything [no questions, no requests]. Truly, truly [verily, I assure you], I tell you, whatever you ask [request, petition] the Father [the heavenly Father, God] in My name [as My representative, in My authority], He will give [bestow, grant] you [as a gift, freely]. word study 24 Until now [hitherto, up to this moment] you have not asked [requested, inquired] for anything [none, nothing] in My name [My authority, character]. Ask [request, petition] and you will receive [take, be given], so that your joy [deep and lasting happiness] may be complete [fulfilled, made full]. word study 25 I have spoken these things [in veiled language, using parables] to you in figures of speech [proverbs, dark sayings]. An hour [a specific time, a season] is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way [in parables, using picture language], but will tell you plainly [with boldness, openly] about the Father [my Father, the one who sent me]. word study 26 In that day [at the appointed time, in the future era] you will ask [make requests, pray] in My name [My authority, character]. I am not saying [I do not mean] that I will ask [plead, intercede] the Father [the heavenly Parent, God] on your behalf [for your sake, in your place]. word study 27 For the Father [the first person of the Trinity] Himself loves [has a strong affection for, cherishes] you, because you have loved [shown affection to, been devoted to] Me and have believed [trusted, had faith] that I came [went out, proceeded] from [out of, beside] God [the supreme deity, the Almighty]. word study 28 I came [from the very presence] from the Father [my divine source] and entered [came into] the world [the earthly realm]. In turn [again, once more], I will leave [depart from, release] the world [human society] and go [travel, journey] to the Father [my heavenly destination].” word study 29 His disciples [the learners, pupils] said, “See [look, behold], now [at this present time] You are speaking [talking, uttering words] plainly [with boldness, freedom] and without [no] figures of speech [proverbs, parables, dark sayings]. word study 30 Now [at this present moment, in this current situation] we understand [have spiritual awareness, perceive] that You know [are aware of, have insight into] all things [everything, all matters] and that You have no need [require nothing, are lacking in nothing] for anyone [any person, no one] to question [ask, inquire of] You. Because of this [by this reason, through this understanding], we believe [trust, have faith] that You came [went out, proceeded] from [out of, away from] God [the one true deity, the Father].” word study 31 “Do you [now, at this moment] finally [really, truly] believe [have faith, trust in]?” Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] replied [answered, responded]. word study 32 “Look, an hour [a specific time, a moment of crisis] is coming and has already come when you will be scattered [disperse, go separate ways], each to his own [private, personal] home, and you will leave Me [abandon, forsake] all alone [solitary, without companions]. Yet I am not alone [without companions, solitary], because the Father [the paternal source, the divine Parent] is with Me [in close relationship, accompanying]. word study 33 I have told you these things [for your benefit, so that you may understand] so that in Me [in my presence, through my Spirit] you may have peace [inner harmony, freedom from fear]. In the world [the earthly realm, under Satan’s influence] you will have tribulation [pressure, distress, trials]. But take courage [be of good cheer, have confidence]; I have overcome [conquered, subdued] the world [the sinful system, the flesh]!” word study
