John 14

1 “Do not [let anxiety take hold] let your hearts [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions] be troubled [stirred up or disturbed]. You believe [have faith, trust] in God [the one true deity]; believe [trust, have confidence] in Me [the Messiah, Jesus Christ] as well [also, in addition to God]. word study 2 In My Father’s [heavenly, divine] house [home, dwelling place] are many [numerous, abundant] rooms [mansions, abodes]. If it were not so [if this were not true, if not], would I have told you that I am going there [to make ready] to prepare [to get ready, to make ready] a place [a location, a dwelling] for you? word study 3 And if I go [to travel, to journey] and prepare [to make ready, to get everything set] a place [a location, a dwelling] for you, I will come back [again, once more] and welcome [to take, to receive] you into My presence [to be with Me, in My company], so that you also may be [exist, dwell] where I am [in My location, with Me]. word study 4 You know [and are familiar with] the way [road or path] to the place [location or destination] where I [the speaker] am going [to depart or proceed]. ” word study 5 “Lord [a title of respect and authority],” said Thomas [one of Jesus’ twelve apostles], “we do not know [are unaware, have no understanding of] where [to what place] You are going [departing, traveling to], so how [in what way] can we know [perceive, understand] the way [the road, path, odon, to your destination]?” word study 6 Jesus answered, “I [the Messiah, God’s Son] am the way [the road to salvation, the path to eternal life] and the truth [the reality of God’s nature, the embodiment of divine wisdom] and the life [eternal existence, spiritual vitality]. No one [none, nobody] comes to the Father [God, the Creator and Sustainer] except through Me [by my authority, through my sacrifice]. word study 7 If you had known [been intimately familiar with, understood] Me, you would know [have a deep understanding of, recognize] My Father [the heavenly Father, God] as well [also, too]. From now on [from this time forward, henceforth] you do know [have come to understand, are aware of] Him and have seen [perceived, beheld] Him.” word study 8 Philip [one of Jesus’ twelve apostles] said to Him, “Lord [Master, God, the supreme authority], show [reveal, make known] us the Father [the Creator, our heavenly Parent], and that will be [is, becomes] enough [sufficient, all we need] for us [to know, to understand].” word study 9 Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with [in the company of, accompanying] you all this time [duration, period], and still you do not know [understand, recognize] Me? Anyone who has seen [perceived, beheld] Me has seen [gazed upon, looked at] the Father [God, the heavenly Parent]. How can you say [ask, inquire], ‘Show us the Father’? word study 10 Do you not [completely] believe that I am [inseparably connected] in the Father [the supreme Parent, Creator] and the Father is [dwelling, residing] in Me? The words [declarations, utterances] I say to you, I do not speak [utter, declare] on My own [from myself, independently]. Instead, it is the Father [the divine Parent] dwelling [abiding, staying] in Me, performing [accomplishing, doing] His works [deeds, actions]. word study 11 Believe [have faith, trust in] Me that I am [dwelling, living] in the Father [the supreme Parent, God] and the Father is in Me [in a close, intimate relationship]—or at least believe [trust, have confidence] on account of the works [miracles, signs] themselves [the evidence, the proof]. word study 12 Truly, truly, I tell you [verily, I say unto you], whoever believes [has faith, trusts] in Me will also do [accomplish, perform] the works [miracles, deeds] that I am doing [performing, accomplishing]. He will do [accomplish, achieve] even greater [more extraordinary, mighty] things than these [than what I have done], because I am going [traveling, proceeding] to the Father [my Father, the heavenly Father]. word study 13 And I will do whatever [whatever you request, all that you ask] you ask [in my authority, for my sake] in My name [representing my character and power], so that the Father [the Creator, our heavenly Parent] may be glorified [honored, praised, and exalted] in the Son [the Messiah, Jesus Christ]. word study 14 If [in the event that, possibly] you ask [request, petition] Me for anything [whatever you need, something specific] in My name [My authority, character], I [the Son, Jesus] will do [accomplish, bring about] it [that thing, the request]. word study 15 If [on the condition that, in case] you love [show esteem and goodwill towards] Me, you will keep [obey, observe, watch over] My [belonging to Me] commandments [divine instructions, orders]. word study 16 And I [the speaker] will ask [request, pray to] the Father [a male parent], and He will give [bestow, grant] you another [different] Advocate [counsellor] to be with [accompany] you forever [for all eternity]— word study 17 the Spirit [of divine truth, the Holy Spirit] of truth. The world [of unbelievers, the ungodly] cannot receive Him, because it neither sees [perceives, discerns] Him nor knows [understands, recognizes] Him. But you do know [are acquainted with, recognize] Him, for He abides [dwells, remains] with you and will be [live, reside] in you. word study 18 I will not [completely, utterly] leave you as [fatherless, comfortless, desolate] orphans [without a parent or guardian]; I will come [return, arrive] to you [to be with you, to comfort you]. word study 19 In a little while [a short time, yet a little] the world [the earthly realm, mankind] will see Me no more [not perceive, will not behold], but you [as My disciples] will see Me [experience My presence, behold]. Because I live [am alive, have eternal life], you also will live [have spiritual life, be alive in Me]. word study 20 On that day [at that specific time, when the truth is revealed] you will know [understand, recognize, perceive] that I am [exist, dwell, have my being] in My Father [the One who sent me, my heavenly Parent], and you are [have your existence, live] in Me [in union with me, connected to me], and I am [live, dwell, have my being] in you [in a personal, intimate relationship with you]. word study 21 Whoever has [possesses and holds] My commandments [divine instructions, teachings] and keeps [observes, watches over] them is the one who loves [shows esteem and goodwill towards] Me. The one who loves [has affection and devotion for] Me will be loved [esteemed and cherished] by My Father [the heavenly Parent], and I will love [have affection for] him and reveal [show and manifest] Myself [my true nature, character] to him.” word study 22 Judas [a different disciple] (not Iscariot) asked Him, “Lord [Master, God, the One in authority], why are You going to reveal [manifest, show clearly] Yourself [Your true nature, character] to us [Your disciples, followers] and not to the world [the earthly realm, humanity]?” word study 23 Jesus replied, “If anyone [truly, with heartfelt devotion] loves Me, he will keep [obey, treasure, and apply] My word [message, teaching, and command]. My Father [in heaven, the Almighty] will love [show affection, care, and kindness to] him, and We will come [draw near, and be present] to him and make [establish, and dwell in] Our home [abode, dwelling place, and resting place] with him. word study 24 Whoever does not [fail to have affection for] love Me does not [neglect to obey] keep My words [messages, teachings]. The word [Logos, divine Expression] that you hear [listen to, understand] is not [certainly not] My own [personal, belonging to Me], but it is from [sent by, originating with] the Father [heavenly Parent] who sent [appointed, commissioned] Me. word study 25 All this [these things, everything] I have spoken [uttered, said] to you [directly, personally] while I am still [remaining, abiding] with you [beside, in the presence of]. word study 26 But the Advocate [Counsellor, Comforter], the Holy Spirit [the divine Spirit, breath of God], whom the Father [the heavenly Parent] will send [dispatch, commission] in My name [authority, character], will teach [instruct, guide] you all things [everything, all truth] and will remind [bring to mind, recall] you of everything [all that I have said] I have told [spoken, commanded] you. word study 27 Peace [inner harmony, freedom from war] I leave [release, send away] with you; My peace [a state of harmony] I give [bestow, grant] to you. I do not give [bestow] to you as [just as, in the same way] the world [an orderly arrangement] gives [bestows]. Do not let [allow, permit] your hearts [the seat of thoughts and emotions] be troubled [stirred up, disturbed]; do not [not even] be afraid [timid, fearful]. word study 28 You heard Me say, ‘I am going away [to depart, to leave], and I am coming back [to return, to come again] to you.’ If you loved [had affection, cherished] Me, you would rejoice [be glad, have joy] that I am going to the Father [to be with God, to return to His presence], because the Father [the supreme Parent, the divine Source] is greater [more powerful, more excellent] than I. word study 29 And [also, in addition] now I have told [spoken, declared] you before [prior to, sooner than] it happens [comes to pass, occurs], so that when [at the time, whenever] it does happen [comes to pass, takes place], you will believe [trust, have faith, be convinced]. word study 30 I will not speak [no longer, anymore] with you much longer [for a short time, briefly], for the prince [ruler, leader] of this world [the earthly realm, human society] is coming [approaching, arriving], and he has no claim [nothing, no power] on Me [over me, in me]. word study 31 But I do exactly what the Father [my heavenly Parent, the One who sent me] has commanded Me, so that the world [all humanity, the cosmos] may know [understand, recognize, perceive] that I love [have affection, esteem, and goodwill towards] the Father. Get up [arise, stand up, wake up]! Let us go on [proceed, journey, depart] from here [this place, hence]. word study
