John 13
BSA1 It was now just before [prior to, preceding] the Passover Feast [festival commemorating Israel’s escape], and Jesus knew [was aware, perceived] that His hour [appointed time, specific moment] had come to leave [depart, go away] this world [earthly realm] and return [go back, come back to] to the Father [God, heavenly Parent]. Having loved [shown affection, esteem] His own [disciples, followers] who were in the world [among earthly things, in the cosmos], He loved [showed love, had affection for] them to the very end [completely, utterly, until the end of time]. word study 2 The evening meal [dinner, supper] was underway, and the devil [Satan, the adversary] had already [even now, previously] put into the heart [the seat of thoughts, feelings, and emotions] of Judas [Iscariot, a man from Kerioth], the son of Simon [a Greek name, possibly meaning ‘hearing’] Iscariot [a person from Kerioth], to betray [to deliver, surrender, or yield up] Jesus. word study 3 Jesus [knowing, being fully aware] knew that the Father [the supreme Parent, God Almighty] had delivered [given, entrusted] all things [everything, the universe] into His hands [authority, power], and that He had come [originated, proceeded] from God [the divine Source, Creator] and was returning [going back, proceeding] to God [the ultimate Destination, Heavenly Father]. word study 4 So He got up [arose, stood up] from the supper [dinner, the main meal], laid aside [took off, removed] His outer garments [clothing, robes], and wrapped [tied around, girded] a towel [linen cloth] around His waist [himself, His person]. word study 5 After that [then, at that time], He poured water into a basin [wash basin] and began [to initiate, to start] to wash [to cleanse] the disciples’ [learners, followers] feet [physical and spiritual] and dry [to wipe off] them with the towel [linen cloth] that was around [wrapped, tied] Him. word study 6 He came [then, as a consequence] to Simon Peter [one of Jesus’ apostles], who asked Him, “Lord [Master, God, the supreme authority], are You going [to come, to proceed] to wash [to cleanse, to purify] my feet [the lowest part of the body, a symbol of humility]?” word study 7 Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] replied, “You [as a disciple] do not realize [understand or perceive] now [at this moment, in this present time] what I [as the Son of God] am doing [accomplishing or performing], but later [after these things, in the future] you will understand [know or comprehend, having spiritual insight].” word study 8 “Never [under no circumstances, not at all] shall You wash my feet [perform this humble act of service]!” Peter [the rock, a disciple] told Him. Jesus [the Savior, God’s salvation] answered, “Unless [if not, except] I wash you [cleanse and purify], you have no part [share, inheritance] with Me [in My kingdom, in My presence].” word study 9 “Then, Lord [Master, God],” Simon Peter [one of Jesus’ twelve apostles] replied, “not only [alone, merely] my feet [the lowest part of the body, symbolizing humility], but [also, in addition to] my hands [instruments of service, representing actions] and my head [the seat of wisdom] as well [also, too]!” word study 10 Jesus told him, “Whoever has already [been completely] bathed [washed, cleansed] needs only to wash [cleanse, purify] his feet, and he will be [totally] completely clean [pure, holy]. And you are [morally, spiritually] clean [purified, sanctified], though not [every one of you] all [entirely, wholly] of you.” word study 11 For [because of this knowledge] He knew [was aware, had insight] who would betray [deliver, surrender] Him. That is why [for this reason] He said, “Not [certainly not] all of you are [exist as] clean [pure, ceremonially undefiled].” word study 12 When [at that specific point in time] Jesus had washed [to cleanse] their feet [a symbol of humility] and put on His outer garments [a cloak or mantle], He reclined [to lean back] with them again [once more] and asked, “Do you know [to understand or recognize] what I have done [to make or accomplish] for you [to your benefit]? word study 13 You [rightly, with respect] call Me Teacher [a guide and instructor] and Lord [Master and God], and rightly so [well, with moral correctness], because I am [exist, have being]. word study 14 So if I, your Lord [and Master] and Teacher [instructor], have washed [cleansed] your feet, you also should wash [cleanse] one another’s [mutually] feet [a symbol of humility]. word study 15 I [as your Lord and Master] have set you an example [given you a pattern to follow] so that you should do [imitate, follow] as I have done [served] for you [out of love, humbly]. word study 16 Truly, truly [verily, I say unto you], I tell you, no [certainly not] servant [slave, bondservant] is greater [more important, superior] than his master [lord, the one in authority], nor [neither] is a messenger [apostle, one sent] greater [more esteemed] than the one [he who] who sent [dispatched, commissioned] him. word study 17 If [in the event that, as a condition] you know [perceive, have spiritual insight] these things [these teachings, this wisdom], you will be [are considered, deemed] blessed [happy, supremely fortunate] if [in the case that, provided] you do [carry out, put into practice] them [these commands, these works]. word study 18 I am not speaking [completely denying] about all of you [every single one]; I know [have spiritual awareness of] whom I have chosen [selected, picked out]. But this is to fulfill [make complete, satisfy] the Scripture [holy writings]: ‘The one who shares [eats with, participates in] My bread [food, nourishment] has lifted up [raised, exalted] his heel [in betrayal, opposition] against Me [in opposition to, contrary to].’ word study 19 I [the Messiah, Jesus Christ] am telling you [disciples, followers] now [at this moment, from henceforth] before [prior to, in anticipation of] it happens [comes to pass, is fulfilled], so that when [whenever, at the time] it comes to pass [is accomplished, fulfilled], you [believers, followers] will believe [trust, have faith] that I [the Son of God, the Savior] am [exist, am present] He [the promised One, the Redeemer]. word study 20 Truly, truly [verily, I assure you], I tell you, whoever receives [welcomes, takes to their heart] the one I send [appoint, commission] receives Me, and whoever receives [accepts, takes in] Me receives the One [Him, the Father] who sent [appointed, commissioned] Me [as His representative].” word study 21 After Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation] had said this, He became troubled [deeply disturbed, stirred up] in spirit [the vital principle or mental disposition] and testified [gave witness, bore evidence], “Truly [verily, amen], truly, I tell you, one [a single individual, unified in purpose] of you will betray [deliver, surrender, or yield up] Me [the Son of God, the Savior].” word study 22 The disciples [followers, learners] looked at one another [toward each other, mutually], perplexed [unsure, confused, doubting] as to which [who, what] of them He [Jesus, the Master] meant [was speaking, intended to say]. word study 23 One [certain, specific] of His disciples [learners, followers], the one whom Jesus loved [had affection for, cherished], was reclining [leaning, resting] at His side. word study 24 So Simon [the apostle] Peter motioned [beckoned, nodded to] to him to ask Jesus [the Messiah, Christ] which one [who, what person] He was talking [speaking, saying] about [concerning, regarding]. word study 25 Leaning back [resting his head, as he was] against Jesus [the Greek name for Joshua, meaning God is salvation], he asked [said unto him], “Lord [a title of respect and power, master], who [which one, what person] is it [the one, that one]?” word study 26 Jesus answered, “It is the one [that one, he] to whom I give [will give, deliver] this morsel [piece of bread, sop] after I have dipped [immersed, put into] it.” Then He dipped [put into, immersed] the morsel [piece of bread] and gave [handed over, delivered] it to Judas [the son of] son of Simon [the father of] Iscariot [from Kerioth, a betrayer]. word study 27 And when Judas had taken the morsel [a small piece of food, a sop], Satan [the adversary, the accuser] entered into him [came into his heart, took control]. Then Jesus said to Judas, “What you are about to do [that which you are going to accomplish], do [carry out, fulfill] quickly [swiftly, without delay].” word study 28 But no one [none, nobody] at the table [reclining, sitting to eat] knew [understood, recognized] why [for what intent, for what purpose] Jesus [the Messiah, the Savior] had said [spoken, uttered] this [referring to a specific action or thing] to him [to Judas, to this specific person]. word study 29 Since Judas [was in charge of finances] kept the money bag, some thought [supposed, had the opinion] that Jesus was telling him [instructing, commanding] to buy [purchase, acquire] what was needed [necessary, required] for the feast [festival, celebration], or [as an alternative] to give [donate, bestow] something to the poor [needy, impoverished]. word study 30 As soon as he had received [taken, accepted] the morsel [a small piece of food, a sop], Judas [that one, the betrayer] went out [immediately departed, exited] into the night [a time of darkness, spiritually and physically]. word study 31 When Judas had gone out [after he had departed], Jesus said, “Now [at this present time] the Son of Man [the Messiah, God’s anointed one] is glorified [honored, exalted], and God [the Father, the Almighty] is glorified [praised, magnified] in Him [through His divine nature, by His presence]. word study 32 If God [the one true deity, Creator of all] is glorified [given praise and honor, exalted] in Him, God will also glorify [honor, exalt, give praise to] the Son [Jesus Christ, the Messiah] in Himself—and will glorify [exalt, honor] Him at once [immediately, without delay, straightway]. word study 33 Little children [my dear ones, whom I love], I am with you only a little while [a short time, yet a little] longer. You will look for Me [seek, search for], and as I said to the Jews [the Jewish leaders, the people of Judah], so now I say to you: ‘Where I am going [to the place I will be], you cannot come [are not able to follow, cannot accompany Me].’ word study 34 A new [fresh, previously unheard of] commandment [instruction, divine order] I give [bestow, grant] you: Love [show esteem and goodwill towards] one another [mutually, towards each other]. As [just as, in the same way] I have loved [shown esteem and goodwill towards] you, so you also must love [demonstrate affection and care for] one another [each other, in a reciprocal manner]. word study 35 By this [in this way, through this means] everyone will know [recognize, understand] that you are My [belonging to Me, Mine] disciples [followers, learners], if you [as a condition, provided that] love [unconditional love, affection] one another [mutually, toward each other].” word study 36 “Lord [Master, God], where [in what direction, to what place] are You going [departing, traveling to]?” Simon Peter asked. Jesus answered [replied, responded], “Where [to the place, in the direction] I am going [traveling, departing], you cannot [are not able, do not have the power] follow [accompany, go with] Me now [at this present time, currently], but you will [shall, in the future] follow [accompany, come after] later [afterwards, at a future time].” word study 37 “Lord [Master, God],” said Peter [the rock, a disciple], “why can’t [is it not possible] I follow [accompany, walk with] You now [at this moment, immediately]? I will lay down [sacrifice, give up] my life [soul, breath of life] for [on behalf of, in place of] You [for Your sake].” word study 38 “Will you lay down [give up, sacrifice] your life [soul, the breath of life] for Me [on My behalf, for My sake]?” Jesus [God is salvation] replied. “Truly [trustworthy and firm], truly [a confirmation of what is said], I tell you [to say or speak], before [until] the rooster [a male chicken] crows [to make a sound], you will deny [to utterly refuse or disown] Me [I or myself] three times [thrice, on three occasions]. word study
