Jeremiah 33

BSA

1 While Jeremiah [the prophet whom Jehovah has appointed] was still [yet, continuing to be] confined [restrained, shut up] in the courtyard [court, village] of the guard [guardhouse, prison], the word [message, thing] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] came to him a second [again, another] time [occasion, instance]: word study 2 “Thus [in this manner, at this time] says the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] who made [created, formed] the earth [the land, the material world], the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme Ruler] who formed [shaped, molded] it and established [set up, appointed] it, the LORD [Yehovah] is His name [His identity, character, and honor]: word study 3 Call [cry out, invoke] to Me, and I will answer [respond, give an account] and show [reveal, declare] you great [mighty, wonderful] and unsearchable [difficult, secret] things [matters, truths] you do not know [are unaware of, have not discovered]. word study 4 For this is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], the God of Israel, says about the houses [dwelling places, including temples] of this city [a place with walls and a watchman] and the palaces [royal residences] of the kings [rulers, monarchs] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah] that have been torn down [destroyed, broken] for defense [protection, safeguard] against the siege ramps [military mounds, banks] and the sword [a cutting instrument, a tool for battle]: word study 5 The Chaldeans [inhabitants of Mesopotamia, a region known for wisdom] are coming to fight [to engage in battle, to wage war] and to fill those places with the corpses [dead bodies, lifeless remains] of the men I will strike down [smite, bring judgment upon] in My anger [intense displeasure, righteous indignation] and in My wrath [fierce rage, burning fury]. I have hidden [concealed, turned away] My face [presence, countenance] from this city because of all its wickedness [moral evil, sinful nature]. word study 6 Nevertheless, I will bring to it [wholeness and restoration] health [being whole or healthy, physically or spiritually] and healing [a cure, deliverance, or a state of peace], and I will heal [mend or cure, often referring to God’s power] its people and reveal [uncover or make known] to them the abundance [a large or plentiful amount] of peace [completeness, wellness, and friendship] and truth [faithfulness, stability, or God’s character]. word study 7 I will restore [bring back, turn back] Judah [the tribe descended from Judah] and Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, also referring to his descendants] from captivity [being held prisoner, exile] and will rebuild [establish, repair] them as [in the same manner, similar to] in former times [at the first, from the beginning]. word study 8 And I will cleanse [purify, make holy] them from all [every, the entirety of] the iniquity [moral evil, sin] they have committed [sinned, done wrong] against Me, and will forgive [pardon, show mercy] all [every, each] their sins [transgressions, rebellions] of rebellion [disobedience, revolt] against Me. word study 9 So this city will bring Me renown [a glorious reputation, celebrated praise], joy [rejoicing, gladness], praise [a song of praise], and glory [beauty, honor] before all [every, the whole of] the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples] of the earth [land, territory], who will hear [listen, give attention] of all [everything, the entirety of] the good [pleasant, beneficial things] I do [make, bring about] for it [on its behalf, to its benefit]. They will tremble [shake, quake] in awe [fear, reverence] because of all [every aspect of] the goodness [kindness, generosity] and prosperity [peace, well-being] that I will provide [make, bring about] for it [to its benefit, on its account]. word study 10 This is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] says: In this place [a location or region] you say is a wasteland [dry and barren] without man [Adam, the first human] or beast [behema, large quadruped mammals], in the cities [excitement, a place with a wall or watchman] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah] and in the streets [outside, beyond a wall or boundary] of Jerusalem [the city of peace] that are deserted—inhabited by neither man [the human race] nor beast [animals, especially livestock]—there will be heard again [od, something continues or happens again] word study 11 the sounds of joy [rejoicing, celebration] and gladness [happiness, delight], the voices of the bride [daughter-in-law] and bridegroom [son-in-law], and the voices of those bringing thank offerings [sacrifices of praise, gratitude] into the house [temple, dwelling place] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of Hosts], saying: ‘Give thanks [praise, acknowledge] to the LORD of Hosts [army, heavenly forces], for the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] is good [pleasant, beneficial]; His loving devotion [kindness, mercy] endures forever [always, eternally].’ For I will restore [return, turn back] the land [earth, territory] from captivity [prison, bondage] as in former times [the first, the beginning], says the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of Hosts]. word study 12 This is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] of Hosts [army, a large group of people or things] says: In this desolate [dry, barren] place, without man [Adam, the first human] or beast [animal, large quadruped mammals], and in all [everything, the whole] its cities [towns, settlements], there will once more be pastures [dwelling, a pleasant place] for shepherds [those who care for or tend to] to rest [to stretch, to lie down] their flocks [sheep, a group of sheep or goats]. word study 13 In the cities [towns, settlements] of the hill country [mountains, highlands], the foothills [lowlands, Shephelah], and the Negev [southern district, south country], in the land [territory, region] of Benjamin [son of the right hand, tribe of Israel] and the cities [towns, villages] surrounding [around, about] Jerusalem [city of peace, capital city], and in the cities [towns, settlements] of Judah [praise, tribe of Israel], the flocks [sheep, goats] will again [still, once more] pass under the hands [care, direction] of the one who counts [numbers, keeps track of] them, says [declares, speaks] the LORD [Yehovah, God Almighty]. word study 14 Behold [look, see], the days [a period of time, an era] are coming [approaching, drawing near], declares the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God], when I will fulfill [carry out, bring to pass] the gracious promise [good thing, word of blessing] that I have spoken [declared, uttered] to the house [family, nation] of Israel [the descendants of Jacob] and the house [family, nation] of Judah [the tribe of Judah]. word study 15 In those days [at that specific point in time, in the future] and at that time [the appointed hour, the moment of fulfillment] I will cause to sprout [to grow, to bring forth] for David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] a righteous [just, virtuous] Branch [a sprout, a new growth], and He will administer [execute, bring about] justice [righteous judgment, moral virtue] and righteousness [moral integrity, uprightness] in the land [the earth, the territory]. word study 16 In those days [before the final redemption] Judah [the tribe of Judah] will be saved [rescued, delivered from trouble], and Jerusalem [the city of peace, the capital of God’s kingdom] will dwell [live, reside] securely [in safety, without fear], and this is the name [the designation, the title] by which it will be called: The LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] Our Righteousness [our justice, our vindication]. word study 17 For [thus, in this manner] this is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] says: David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] will never [not at any time] lack [be without] a man [an individual, a male person] to sit [to dwell, remain] on the throne [a seat of power, authority] of the house [a dwelling place, a family] of Israel [the descendants of Jacob], word study 18 nor will the priests [Levitical, descended from Levi] who are Levites [ministers of God] ever fail to have a man before Me [in My presence, face to face] to offer [present, bring forth] burnt offerings [sacrifices totally consumed by fire], to burn [kindle, set on fire] grain offerings [gifts of flour or bread], and to present [make, offer] sacrifices [acts of worship, atonement, or devotion].” word study 19 And the word [message from God, divine communication] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] came [was given, revealed] to Jeremiah [whom God has appointed, a prophet of God]: word study 20 “This is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] says: If you can break My covenant [promise, agreement] with the day [a 24-hour period] and My covenant [treaty, alliance] with the night [a period of rest], so that day [by day, daily] and night [by night, in the darkness] cease to occupy their appointed time [season, a specific occasion], word study 21 then My covenant [agreement, promise] may also be broken [frustrated, violated] with David [the king of Israel, My servant] My servant [faithful attendant, worshiper] and with My ministers [those who serve Me] the Levites [descendants of Levi, priests] who are priests [spiritual leaders, mediators], so that David will not have a son [descendant, heir] to reign [rule, govern] on his throne [seat of authority, kingdom]. word study 22 As the hosts [army, celestial bodies] of heaven [the sky, the universe] cannot be counted [numbered, recounted] and as the sand [grains, particles] on the seashore [the beach, the coast] cannot be measured [gauged, estimated], so too will I multiply [increase, grow] the descendants [seed, offspring] of My servant [slave, attendant] David [the king of Israel] and the Levites [priests, ministers] who minister [serve, attend] before Me [in My presence, to Me].” word study 23 Moreover, the word [message from God, divine utterance] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God] came [was given, existed] to Jeremiah [whom God has appointed] [saying, to speak]: word study 24 “Have you not noticed [paid attention to, considered] what these people [the nation of Israel, my chosen ones] are saying: ‘The LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] has rejected [cast off, abandoned] the two [dual, paired] families [tribes, clans] He had chosen’? So they despise [scorn, show contempt for] My people [nation, community] and no longer regard [consider, esteem] them as a nation [Gentile, large group]. word study 25 This is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] says: If I have not established [set, appointed] My covenant [promise, agreement] with the day [by day, daily] and the night [period of darkness] and the fixed order [statutes, ordinances] of heaven [the visible universe, sky] and earth [the land, material world], word study 26 then I would also [even, too] reject [spurn, abandon] the descendants [seed, offspring] of Jacob [a key figure in Israel’s history] and of My servant [faithful attendant, devoted follower] David, so as not to take [select, choose] from his descendants [seed, offspring] rulers [leaders, governors] over the descendants [seed, offspring] of Abraham [father of the faithful], Isaac [child of promise], and Jacob [he who wrestles with God]. For [because, since] I will restore [return, bring back] them from captivity [exile, imprisonment] and will have compassion [mercy, pity] on them.” word study
