Isaiah 25

1 O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], You are my God [Elohim, the supreme God]! I will exalt [lift up, honor] You; I will praise [give thanks, glorify] Your name [identity, character]. For You have worked [done, accomplished] wonders [miraculous things, amazing acts]— plans [counsels, purposes] formed [planned, ordained] long ago [in the distant past, from ancient times]— in perfect [complete, steadfast] faithfulness [loyalty, trustworthiness]. word study 2 Indeed, You have made the city [a mass of broken walls] a heap of rubble, the fortified [strong, defensive] town a ruin [a place of decay, a fallen building]. The fortress [high palace, citadel] of strangers [foreigners, non-citizens] is a city no more; it will never [to the age, forever] be rebuilt [established, restored]. word study 3 Therefore, a strong [mighty] people [nation, group of individuals] will [glorify, give glory to] honor You [revere, worship]. The cities [towns, urban areas] of ruthless [terrible] nations [Gentile, non-Hebrew peoples] will [fear, stand in awe of] revere You [have a deep respect for]. word study 4 For You have been a [stronghold, refuge] refuge for the poor [needy, oppressed], a stronghold [security] for the needy [weak, afflicted] in distress [trouble, hard circumstances], a [shelter, haven] refuge from the storm [tempest, whirlwind], a shade [shadow] from the heat [drought, desolation]. For the breath [spirit, wind] of the ruthless [cruel, terrible ones] is like rain [a storm] against a wall [barrier, obstacle], word study 5 like heat [intense warmth, scorching] in a dry land [parched and barren, a desolate place]. You subdue [humble, bring low] the uproar [loud noise, tumult] of foreigners [strangers, those outside of God’s people]. As the shade [shadow, protection] of a cloud [a dark cloud] cools [calms, soothes] the heat [sweltering, oppressive], so the song [musical praise, joyful melody] of the ruthless [cruel, terrifying] is silenced [stilled, brought to an end]. word study 6 On this [holy] mountain the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] of Hosts [armies, a large group of people or things] will prepare [make, bring into existence] a banquet [feast] for all [every, the entire] the peoples [nations, Amaw], a feast [celebration] of aged [preserved, refined] wine, of choice [fat, rich] meat, of finely [well refined, purified] aged wine [wine on the lees]. word study 7 On [this specific] this mountain He will swallow up [completely destroy, devour] the shroud [covering, veil] that enfolds [wraps, covers] all peoples [nations, Gentiles], the sheet [veil, covering] that covers [spreads over, envelops] all nations [Gentile nations, heathen]; word study 8 He will swallow up [destroy, consume] death [the end of life, eternal separation] forever [for all eternity, perpetually]. The Lord [Adonay, the sovereign God] GOD [Yehovah] will wipe away [erase, blot out] the tears [sorrow, mourning] from every face [presence, countenance] and remove [take away, eliminate] the disgrace [reproach, shame] of His people [nation, community] from the whole earth [land, world]. For the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] has spoken [declared, commanded]. word study 9 And in that day [a future time of fulfillment] it will be said, “Surely this is our God [Elohim, the one supreme God]; we have waited [patiently expected, trusted in] for Him, and He has saved [rescued, delivered] us. This is the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] for whom we have waited. Let us rejoice [be glad, celebrate] and be glad [joyful, triumphant] in His salvation [deliverance, victory].” word study 10 For the hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] will rest [to settle down and remain] on this mountain [a hill]. But Moab [the land and descendants of Lot] will be trampled [overpowered, dominated] in his place as straw [dry stems, worthless material] is trodden [heavily walked on] into the dung pile [a garbage dump]. word study 11 He will spread out [stretch forth, like a swimmer] his hands [an open hand; strength, a side or share] within it, as a swimmer [one who moves through water] spreads his arms [with skill and strength] to swim [to move through the water with ease]. His pride [arrogance, self-importance] will be brought low [humbled, abased], despite the skill [cunning, cleverness] of his hands [his abilities and strength]. word study 12 The high-walled [strong tower, fortified place] fortress [fortification] will be brought down [demolished, laid low], cast [brought, pulled] to the ground [land, earth], into the dust [dry earth, clay]. word study
