Hebrews 2
BSA1 We must pay [excessively, beyond measure] closer attention [to watch out, be cautious], therefore, to what [the things which] we have heard [listened to, understood, and obeyed], so that we do not [lest, if ever] drift away [carelessly pass by, let slip]. word study 2 For if the message [word, divine utterance] spoken by angels [heavenly messengers] was binding [steadfast, reliable], and every transgression [violation, overstepping] and disobedience [refusal to listen, rebellion] received its just [fair, righteous] punishment [recompense, consequence], word study 3 how [in what way, by what means] shall we escape [flee from, avoid] if we neglect [ignore, disregard] such a great [mighty, extraordinary] salvation [rescue, deliverance]? This salvation [deliverance from sin and its consequences] was first announced [proclaimed, spoken] by the Lord [Jesus Christ, the Messiah], was confirmed [established, guaranteed] to us by those who heard [listened to, obeyed] Him [the Lord, the Master], word study 4 and was affirmed [confirmed, testified to] by God [the supreme Deity, Almighty] through signs [miraculous tokens], wonders [supernatural marvels], various [diverse, manifold] miracles [powers, acts of might], and gifts [distributions, impartations] of the Holy [set apart, sanctified] Spirit [the divine Breath] distributed [given, imparted] according to [in line with, following] His [God’s own] will [purpose, desire]. word study 5 For [as a reason, explaining why] it is not to angels [messengers, heavenly beings] that He has subjected [put under His authority, made obedient] the world [the inhabited earth, the land] to come [that is to ensue, about to happen], about [concerning, regarding] which [this specific matter] we are speaking [talking, uttering words]. word study 6 But somewhere [in a certain place, at some point] it is testified [solemnly declared, witnessed] in these words: “What is man [a human being, mortal] that You are mindful of him [remember, think of him], or the son of man [a human, a descendant of Adam] that You care for him [visit, look after him]? word study 7 You made him [a little inferior, for a little while] a little lower than the [heavenly] angels [messengers of God]; You crowned him with [great] glory [honor and praise] and [high] honor [esteem and dignity] [and set him over the works of Your hands] word study 8 and placed everything [all things, the universe] under his feet [in subjection, under his authority].” When God [the Creator, the Supreme Being] subjected [put in subjection, made obedient] all things [the entire creation, everything] to him, He left [released, abandoned] nothing [not a single thing, no exception] outside of his control [not subject to him, without authority]. Yet at present [now, in this current time] we do not see [perceive, observe] everything [all things, the universe] subject [in subjection, obedient] to him [under his authority, in submission]. word study 9 But we see Jesus [the Son of God, our Savior], who was made a little [for a short time, briefly] lower than the angels [messengers of God], now crowned with glory [honor, praise] and honor [esteem, dignity] because He suffered [experienced, endured] death [physical and spiritual separation from God], so that by the grace [unmerited favor, divine influence] of God He might taste [experience, partake of] death [separation from God] for everyone [all humanity, every person]. word study 10 In bringing many [numerous, a large multitude] sons [children, heirs] to glory [honor, heavenly splendor], it was fitting [proper, becoming] for God [the Creator, Almighty], for whom [on behalf of, because of] and through whom [by means of, as the cause] all things [the universe, everything] exist, to make the author [founder, leader] of their salvation [rescue, deliverance] perfect [complete, mature] through [by means of, as a result of] suffering [affliction, hardship]. word study 11 For both the One who sanctifies [makes holy, sets apart] and those who are sanctified [made holy, set apart] are of the same family [all of one, belonging to God]. So Jesus is not ashamed [does not feel regret or embarrassment] to call them brothers [brethren, fellow believers]. word study 12 He says: “I will proclaim [declare, announce] Your name [character, authority] to My brothers [fellow believers, siblings in faith]; I will sing [praise, worship] Your praises [hymns of thanksgiving] in the assembly [church, congregation, gathering of believers].” word study 13 And again [once more, a second time]: “I will put My trust [faith, confidence] in Him [the Lord, the Messiah].” And once again [another time, a third instance]: “Here am I [behold, I exist], and the children [sons, offspring] God [the Father, the Creator] has given [bestowed, entrusted] Me [to me, as a gift].” word study 14 Now since [because of this reason] the children [those whom God calls His own] have flesh [human nature, physical body] and blood [the vital fluid], He too [Himself, in like manner] shared [partook, participated] in their humanity [mortal nature, human experience], so that by His death [physical death, separation from life] He might destroy [bring to nothing, abolish] him who holds [has, possesses] the power [authority, control] of death [separation from God, eternal punishment], that is [namely, specifically], the devil [the adversary, Satan], word study 15 and free [deliver, release] those who all their lives [throughout their entire lifetime] were held in [subject to, bound by] slavery [bondage, servitude] by their fear [terror, alarm] of death [physical or spiritual separation]. word study 16 For [certainly, doubtless] surely it is not [by no means] the angels [messengers of God] He helps [gives aid to, takes hold of], but [on the contrary] the descendants [seed, offspring] of Abraham [the father of the Jewish nation]. word study 17 For this reason [because of this necessity] He had to be made [to become, to be formed] like His brothers [fellow humans, brethren] in every way [in all things, completely], so that He might become [be, come into being] a merciful [full of mercy, compassionate] and faithful [trustworthy, reliable] high priest [chief priest, supreme priest] in service [ministry, priestly duty] to God [the Supreme Being, Almighty], in order to make [to offer, to provide] atonement [reconciliation, propitiation] for the sins [transgressions, offenses] of the people [humans, mankind]. word study 18 Because He Himself [having suffered greatly] suffered [experienced pain and hardship] when He was tempted [tested, tried], He is able [has the power, capability] to help [assist, succor] those who are being tempted [tried, tested, in a state of trial]. word study
