Genesis 39
BSA1 Meanwhile, Joseph [the one whom Jehovah has added] had been taken down [brought to a lower place, descended] to Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa], where an Egyptian [a native of Egypt, a man from the land of the Nile] named Potiphar [he whom Re has given], an officer [a ruler, a captain] of Pharaoh [the king of Egypt, a powerful leader] and captain [head, chief] of the guard [the royal lifeguards, executioners], bought [acquired, redeemed] him from the Ishmaelites [descendants of Ishmael, a tribe of people] who had taken [brought, led] him there [to that place, to Egypt]. word study 2 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] was with Joseph [Jehovah has added], and he became a successful [prosperous, to rush forward with success] man, serving in the household [place, dwelling] of his Egyptian [from the country of Egypt] master [lord, one in authority]. word study 3 When his master [lord, ruler] saw that the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] was with [near, in close relationship] him and made [causing to succeed, prospering] him prosper [to rush, succeed] in all [everything, every matter] he did [was doing, accomplishing], word study 4 Joseph [the one Jehovah has added] found favor [grace, kindness] in his sight [before his eyes, in his presence] and became his personal attendant [served him, ministered to him]. Potiphar put him in charge of [made him overseer over] his household [house, family] and entrusted him with [put into his hand] everything he owned [all that he had, his possessions]. word study 5 From the time that he put Joseph [as overseer] in charge of his household [place, dwelling] and all he owned [possessed, had control over], the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] blessed [bestowed divine favor upon, prospered] the Egyptian’s household [family, estate] on account of him [because of, for Joseph’s sake]. The LORD’s [Yehovah’s, God’s] blessing [gift of prosperity, divine favor] was on everything he owned [had, possessed], both in his house [dwelling place, home] and in his field [land, territory]. word study 6 So Potiphar left all [everything, every possession] that he owned in Joseph’s [the one God adds to] care; he did not concern himself with anything [nothing, not a single thing] except the food [bread, sustenance] he ate. Now Joseph was well-built [comely, handsome] and handsome [beautiful, pleasant to look at], word study 7 and after [these things] some time his master’s [lord, owner] wife [woman, mistress] cast her eyes [gaze, look] upon Joseph [Jehovah has added] and said [to him, with desire], “Sleep [lie down, have sexual relations] with me [together, intimately].” word study 8 But he refused [to give in, to yield]. “Look [behold, see],” he said to his master’s wife [the woman, his lord’s female companion], “with me here [in charge, present], my master [lord, owner] does not concern himself [know, care] with anything in his house [dwelling, household], and he has entrusted [given, committed] everything he owns [possesses, has] to my care [hand, responsibility]. word study 9 No one in this house [dwelling place, family home] is greater than I am [holds more authority, has more power]. He has withheld [refrained from giving, kept back] nothing from me except you, because you are his wife [woman, spouse]. So how [in what way, by what means] could I do such a great [large, significant] evil [wickedness, sin] and sin [disobey, miss the mark] against God [Elohim, the supreme Being]?” word study 10 Although Potiphar’s wife spoke [day by day, persistently] to Joseph day after day, he refused [would not give ear, hearkened not] to go to bed [to lie down, have sexual relations] with her or even [to be near, be in her company] be near her. word study 11 One day [about this time, a certain day], however, Joseph went into the house [dwelling place, his master’s home] to attend to his work [perform his duties, do his business], and not a single [none, no] household servant [man of the house, one of the men] was inside [there, present in the house]. word study 12 She grabbed Joseph by his cloak [seized his garment, caught hold of him] and said, “Sleep with me [lie with me, have sex with me]!” But leaving his cloak [garment, robe] in her hand [in her power, under her control], he escaped [fled, ran away] and ran outside [went out, came out into the open]. word study 13 When she saw [perceived, noticed] that he had left [abandoned, forsaken] his cloak [garment, clothing] in her hand [power, control] and had run [fled, escaped] out of the house [outside, into the open], word study 14 she called [summoned, shouted to] her household servants [the men of her house]. “Look [see, behold],” she said, “this Hebrew [a descendant of Eber] has been brought to us [to our home, to our family] to make sport of us [to mock, to ridicule, to laugh at]. He came to me [approached me, drew near to me] so he could sleep with me [lie with me, have sexual relations with me], but I screamed [cried out, shouted] as loud as I could [with a loud voice, in a great cry]. word study 15 When he heard [with attention and obedience] me scream [lift up my voice and cry] for help, he left [forsaken, relinquished] his cloak [garment, clothing] beside [near, in proximity to] me and ran [to flee, quickly leave] out of the house [outside, to the street].” word study 16 So Potiphar’s wife kept [laid up, stored] Joseph’s cloak [garment, clothing] beside [near, close to] her until [as far as, till] his master [lord] came [approached, entered] home [to his house]. word study 17 Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew [a descendant of Eber] slave [servant, one who serves] you brought us came to me [approached me, drew near] to make sport of me [to mock, to laugh at, to scorn], word study 18 but when I [lifted up my voice and] screamed [cried out loudly] for help, he left his [garment, clothing] cloak beside [near me] me and ran [fled quickly] out of the house [outside, to the street].” word study 19 When his master [lord, ruler] heard the story [words, account] his wife [woman, spouse] told him, saying, “This is what your slave [servant, bondservant] did to me,” he burned [was kindled, became incensed] with anger [wrath, indignation]. word study 20 So Joseph’s master [lord, ruler] took him and had him thrown into the prison [place of confinement, dungeon] where the king’s [royal, sovereign] prisoners [captive, bound ones] were confined [held, restrained]. While Joseph was there [in that place, at that time] in the prison [house of bondage, place of detention], word study 21 the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] was with him [in close relationship, near] and extended kindness [showing mercy, pity] to him, granting him favor [showing graciousness, kindness] in the eyes [the source of perception, understanding] of the prison [a place surrounded by walls, a dungeon] warden [a leader, person in charge]. word study 22 And the warden [keeper of the prison, chief jailer] put all the prisoners [captive ones, those bound or restrained] under Joseph’s [Jehovah has added] care, so that he was responsible [in charge, having authority] for all that was done [made, accomplished] in the prison [place of confinement, dungeon]. word study 23 The warden [keeper of the prison, chief jailer] did not concern himself with anything [nothing, no matter how small] under Joseph’s care [management, supervision], because the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] was with [near, in close relationship] Joseph and gave him success [caused him to prosper, made him successful] in whatever he did [all his actions, everything he undertook]. word study
