Deuteronomy 11
BSA1 You shall therefore love [with all your heart and soul] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] and always keep His charge [His watchful care], His statutes [divine ordinances], His ordinances [judgments and commandments], and His commandments [laws given by God]. word study 2 Know [be aware, understand] this day [this present time, today] that it is not [certainly not, by no means] your children [sons, descendants] who have known [experienced, learned] and seen [perceived, witnessed] the discipline [chastisement, correction] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God]: His greatness [magnitude, power], His mighty [strong, powerful] hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share], and His outstretched [stretched out, extended] arm [the arm as stretched out; strength, might, power]; word study 3 the signs [miracles, wonders] and works [deeds, actions] He did in [the midst of] Egypt to Pharaoh [the king] king of Egypt and all [everything] his land [territory, country]; word study 4 what He did [as an act of judgment] to the Egyptian army [host, military force] and horses [war horses, cavalry] and chariots [vehicles, carts] when He made [caused, brought about] the waters [flood, deluge] of the Red Sea [sea of reeds] engulf [overflow, overwhelm] them as they pursued [chased, followed] you, and how He destroyed [annihilated, wiped out] them completely [totally, utterly], even to this day [until now, continually]; word study 5 what He did [to make, or accomplish] for you [on your behalf, or in your interest] in the wilderness [desert, or open field] until you reached [came, or arrived at] this place [location, or specific spot]; word study 6 and what He did [as a warning to them] in the midst of all the Israelites to Dathan [a Reubenite chief, a leader in the rebellion] and Abiram [meaning my father is exalted, a brother of Dathan], the sons [descendants, family members] of Eliab [a leader of Zebulun and a brother of David] the Reubenite [a member of the tribe of Reuben, the firstborn son of Jacob and Leah], when the earth [the land, the ground, the physical world] opened [split, gaped] its mouth [lip, edge] and swallowed [destroyed, consumed] them, their households [families, tents], their tents [nomadic homes, temporary dwellings], and every living thing [existence, creature, being] that belonged to them [was in their possession, under their care]. word study 7 For [as a reason, because] it is your own eyes [which have personally witnessed] that have seen [beheld, observed] every [all, each] great [mighty, powerful] work [deed, act] that the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] has done [accomplished, performed]. word study 8 You shall therefore keep [obey, protect, and guard] every commandment [law, instruction, or decree] I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength [be strong, courageous, and empowered] to go in and possess [take control of, occupy, and inherit] the land [territory, country, or region] that you are crossing the Jordan [transitioning, passing over] to possess [own, rule, and dominate], word study 9 and so that you may live long [prolong your days, have a long life] in the land [a land of promise, a territory] that the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] swore [made a vow, gave an oath] to your fathers [ancestors, forefathers] to give them and their descendants [seed, offspring], a land [a country, a region] flowing [abundant, overflowing] with milk and honey [a sweet and valuable food]. word study 10 For the land [a region, territory] that you are entering [going in, coming into] to possess [take control of, occupy] is not like the land [earth, soil] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa], from which you have come [gone out, departed], where you sowed [planted, scattered] your seed [offspring, descendants] and irrigated [watered, gave drink to] on foot [by hand, manually], like a vegetable [herb, green plant] garden [enclosed area, cultivated land]. word study 11 But the land [a country, territory, or region] that you are crossing [to pass, transition, or go over] the Jordan to possess [to take control, occupy, or inherit] is a land [a country or territory] of mountains [hills or high places] and valleys [low areas or plains] that drinks [receives or absorbs] in the rain [water from the sky] from heaven [the sky, or the spiritual realm]. word study 12 It is a land [cared for, watched over] for which the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God] cares; the eyes [sources of watchful care] of the LORD your God are always [continually, constantly] on it, from the beginning [first part, inception] to the end [last part, finality] of the year. word study 13 So if you carefully obey [hearken diligently unto, pay attention to] the commandments [laws, divine instructions] I am giving you today, to love [have affection for, be devoted to] the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] your God [Elohim, the one true God] and to serve [worship, work for] Him with all [your entire being, completely] your heart [innermost part, mind and emotions] and with all [your entire being, completely] your soul [living being, essence], word study 14 then I will provide [send, give] rain [water from the sky, precipitation] for your land [country, territory, earth] in season [at the right time, when needed], the autumn [first, early] and spring [latter, late] rains, that you may gather [collect, harvest] your grain [wheat, crops], new wine [freshly squeezed, fermented], and oil [olive, anointing]. word study 15 And I will provide [send, give] grass [vegetation, herbs] in the fields [your land, for cultivation] for your livestock [animals, cattle], and you will eat [devour, consume] and be satisfied [full, filled, having enough]. word study 16 But be careful [take heed to yourselves, beware] that you are not enticed [deceived, to open wide] to turn aside [to depart, remove] to worship [serve, bow down] and bow down [prostrate yourselves] to other [strange, different] gods [Elohim, supreme beings], word study 17 or the anger [intense wrath, fiery passion] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] will be kindled [ignited, fiercely burning] against you. He will shut [restrain, hold back] the heavens [the sky, the atmosphere] so that there will be no [none, absent] rain [moisture, precipitation], nor will the land [earth, soil] yield [produce, give forth] its produce [crops, fruit], and you will soon [quickly, hastily] perish [be destroyed, lost] from the good [pleasant, beneficial] land [earth, territory] that the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] is giving [providing, bestowing] you. word study 18 Fix [lay up, treasure] these words of mine [commands, teachings] in your hearts [innermost being, mind] and minds [thoughts, understanding]; tie them as reminders [signs] on your hands [an open hand; strength, a side or share] and bind them on your foreheads [as frontlets, phylacteries]. word study 19 Teach [instruct, guide] them to your children [sons, descendants], speaking [talking, communicating] about them when you sit [dwell, remain] at home [in your house, dwelling place] and when you walk [go, journey] along the road [way, path], when you lie down [rest, sleep] and when you get up [rise, stand]. word study 20 Write [record, inscribe] them on the doorposts [pillars, vertical posts] of your houses [dwelling places, homes] and on your gates [city entrances, doors], word study 21 so that as long as the heavens [the visible universe and the abode of God] are above the earth [the land, the material world], your days [periods of time, seasons of life] and those of your children [sons, descendants, or posterity] may be multiplied [increased, abundant, or flourishing] in the land [the promised territory, the inheritance] that the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] swore [made a promise, took an oath] to give your fathers [ancestors, patriarchs, or forefathers]. word study 22 For if you carefully keep [diligently obey, faithfully observe] all these commandments [instructions, divine laws] I am giving you to follow—to love [have affection for, be devoted to] the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] your God [Elohim, the supreme Creator], to walk [live, conduct your life] in all His ways [paths, manner of life], and to hold fast [cleave, stick closely] to Him— word study 23 then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] will drive out [expel, cast out] all these nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrew peoples] before you, and you will dispossess [take control of, occupy] nations [Gentile groups] greater [larger, more powerful] and stronger [mightier, more numerous] than you. word study 24 Every place [all the ground, wherever you walk] where the sole [palm] of your foot [the heel, the step] treads [walks, steps on] will be yours [belong to you, under your authority]. Your territory [border, coast] will extend [stretch, reach] from the wilderness [desert, open field] to Lebanon [the mountain range, the white peaks], and from the Euphrates River [the great river, the river of prosperity] to the Western Sea [the Mediterranean, the last sea, the farthest west]. word study 25 No man [none, any person] will be able to stand [resist, withstand] against you; the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] your God [Elohim, the supreme ruler] will put [lay, place] the fear [awe, terror] and dread [fearful respect] of you upon [on, over] all the land [earth, territory], wherever you set foot [tread, walk], as He has promised [spoken, declared] you. word study 26 See [behold, look carefully], today I [the speaker, the Lord] am setting [putting, placing] before you [in your presence, face to face] a blessing [a gift from God, prosperity] and a curse [a wish for harm, evil]— word study 27 a blessing [the gift of divine favor] if you obey [hearken unto, listen and follow] the commandments [laws, divine instructions] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God] that I [as a prophet, leader] am giving [commanding, appointing] you today [in this present time, now], word study 28 but a curse [a divine judgment, a reviling] if you disobey [refuse to hear, do not hearken unto] the commandments [laws, ordinances] of the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] your God [Elohim, the one true God] and turn aside [depart, remove yourselves] from the path [way, journey] I command [give orders, appoint] you today [this day, at this time] by following [walking after, pursuing] other gods [foreign deities, idols], which you have not known [not previously encountered, been unaware of]. word study 29 When the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God] brings [leads, guides] you into the land [the promised territory, a country] you are entering [coming, approaching] to possess [take control, occupy], you are to proclaim [declare, announce] the blessing [a gift from God, prosperity] on Mount [a high hill] Gerizim [the mountain of blessing] and the curse [a wish for harm, evil] on Mount [a high hill] Ebal [the mountain of cursing]. word study 30 Are not these mountains [beyond, on the other side of] across the Jordan, west of the road [way, path] toward the sunset [where the sun goes down], in the land [earth, territory] of the Canaanites [inhabitants of Canaan] who live [dwell, reside] in the Arabah [desert plain, wilderness] opposite [across from, in front of] Gilgal [a region conquered by Joshua] near [beside, close to] the Oak [terebinth, strong tree] of Moreh [a hill, a place of gathering]? word study 31 For you are about to cross [pass over, transition into] the Jordan [the river, a key location] to enter [go in, approach] and possess [take control of, occupy] the land [the earth, a country] that the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] your God [Elohim, the supreme God] is giving [providing, granting] you. When you take possession [occupy, settle] of it and settle [dwell, remain] in it, word study 32 be careful [take heed, observe diligently] to follow [obey, keep] all [everything, every single one] the statutes [decrees, laws] and ordinances [judgments, regulations] that [which] I [the Lord, the Speaker] am setting [giving, putting] before [in the presence of] you [your faces, your selves] today [this day, at this time]. word study
