1 John 5
BSA1 Everyone [all people, every individual] who believes [has faith, trusts] that Jesus [the Messiah, God’s anointed] is the Christ [the chosen one, God’s appointed Savior] has been born [spiritually regenerated, begotten] of God [the Father, the Creator], and everyone [every person, all who love] who loves [has affection, esteem] the Father [God, the Almighty] also loves [has compassion, cares for] those born [begotten, spiritually reborn] of Him [God, the heavenly Father]. word study 2 By this [in this way, hereby] we know [have certainty, understand] that we love [show esteem and goodwill towards] the children [sons and daughters] of God [the one true deity]: when we love [have affection for, cherish] God and keep [obey, observe carefully] His commandments [divine instructions, laws]. word study 3 For this [specific, divine] is the love [unconditional, divine affection] of God [the one true deity], that we keep [obey, observe carefully] His commandments [divine instructions, orders]. And His commandments [instructions, laws] are not [by no means] burdensome [weighty, grievous, hard to bear], word study 4 because everyone [all who are] born [begotten, brought into new life] of God [the one true deity] overcomes [conquers, subdues] the world [the earthly realm, human society]. And this is the victory [triumph, conquest] that has overcome [subdued, conquered] the world: our [the believer’s] faith [trust, confidence in God]. word study 5 Who then overcomes [defeats, conquers] the world [the earthly realm, human society]? Only he who believes [trusts, has faith] that Jesus [the Son of Man, God’s Anointed] is the Son [having God’s nature, divine] of God [the Almighty, Creator]. word study 6 This is the One [he who came to earth from God] who came by water and blood [the atoning sacrifice of Christ], Jesus Christ [the Messiah, God’s anointed]—not by water [baptism] alone [only], but by water and blood [the sacrifice that seals redemption]. And it is the Spirit [the vital principle, the divine breath] who testifies [bears witness, gives evidence] to this, because the Spirit [the essence of God’s nature] is the truth [absolute reality, genuine authenticity]. word study 7 For there are [exactly, precisely] three [a specific number, a divine unity] that testify [bear witness, give evidence]: word study 8 the Spirit [breath of God, divine presence], the water, and the blood [atonement, sacrifice of Christ]—and these three [witnesses, testifiers] are in agreement [united, one in purpose]. word study 9 Even if [in the event that, supposing] we accept [receive, take to heart] human [of men, from people] testimony [witness, evidence], the testimony [witness, affirmation] of God [the Almighty, divine] is greater [more significant, of greater importance]. For this [because of this fact] is the testimony [declaration, affirmation] that God [the Father, divine] has given [provided, borne witness] about [concerning, regarding] His Son [the Messiah, Jesus Christ]. word study 10 Whoever believes [has faith, trusts] in the Son [Child, offspring] of God [the Father, Creator] has this testimony [witness, evidence] within him; whoever does not believe [trust, have faith in] God [the Almighty, Eternal One] has made Him out to be a liar [one who deceives, spreads falsehood], because he has not believed [trusted, had faith in] in the testimony [record, witness] that God [the Lord, Savior] has given about His Son [the Messiah, Redeemer]. word study 11 And this [witness, testimony] is that testimony: God [the supreme Deity, Creator] has given [bestowed, granted] us eternal [lasting forever, age-during] life, and this life [spiritual existence, divine nature] is in His Son [the Messiah, Christ]. word study 12 Whoever has [possesses, holds] the Son [the Messiah, God’s Anointed] has [enjoys, experiences] life [eternal existence, spiritual vitality]; whoever does not have [lack, are without] the Son [the Christ, God’s beloved] of God [the Father, Almighty] does not have [is devoid of, cannot experience] life [true fellowship, divine nature]. word study 13 I have written [recorded, penned] these things to you who believe [trust, have faith] in the name [character, authority] of the Son [Child, offspring] of God [the one true deity], so that you may know [perceive, understand] that you have [possess, hold] eternal [forever, everlasting] life [spiritual existence, divine nature]. word study 14 And this [specific, particular] is the confidence [boldness, freedom in speaking] that we have [possess, hold] before [in the presence of, towards] Him: If we ask [request, petition] anything [whatever, something] according to [in line with, following] His [God’s, divine] will [desire, intention], He hears [listens to, gives attention to] us. word study 15 And if we know [are certain, have confidence] that He hears [listens, gives attention to] us in whatever [all things, everything] we ask [request, petition], we know [perceive, understand] that we already possess [have, hold] what we have asked [requested, desired] of Him [from His presence, in His name]. word study 16 If anyone sees [perceives, or is aware of] his brother [fellow Christian, sibling in faith] committing a sin [missing the mark, falling short of God’s standards] not leading to [resulting in, or causing] death [physical or spiritual separation from God], he should ask [request, petition, or pray to] God [the Father, the Almighty], who will give [bestow, grant, or impart] life [eternal, spiritual, or physical existence] to those who commit [practice, or are guilty of] this kind of sin [error, or transgression]. There is a sin [rebellion, or disobedience] that leads to [results in, or causes] death [separation from God, or eternal punishment]; I am not saying [commanding, or instructing] he should ask [pray, or request] regarding [concerning, or about] that sin [the unforgivable sin, or the sin unto death]. word study 17 All [every, each] unrighteousness [morally wrong, unjust] is sin [missing the mark, falling short of God’s standards], yet there is sin [a sin not unto death, not leading to spiritual death] that does not lead [result in, bring about] to death [physical or spiritual separation from God]. word study 18 We know [are certain, have spiritual awareness] that anyone born [begotten, generated] of God [the one true deity] does not keep on sinning [practice sin, miss the mark]; the One who was born [begotten] of God [having God’s nature] protects him [keeps him safe, watches over him], and the evil one [the wicked, Satan] cannot touch [harm, attach himself to] him. word study 19 We know [are spiritually aware, perceive] that we are of [belong to, have the nature of] God [the one true deity], and that the whole [entire, complete] world [the system of human society, the earthly realm] is under [in the power of, controlled by] the power [influence, authority] of the evil [wicked, morally bad] one [the adversary, Satan]. word study 20 And we know [are certain, have spiritual awareness] that the Son [Child, offspring] of God [the one true deity] has come [arrived, is present] and has given us [bestowed upon us, granted to us] understanding [a mind, spiritual insight], so that we may know [recognize, understand] Him who is true [authentic, genuine]; and we are in [belong to, exist in] Him who is true [faithful, real]—in [through, by means of] His Son [offspring] Jesus Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah]. He is [exists as] the true [real, genuine] God [the supreme Creator] and [possesses] eternal [endless, everlasting] life [existence, spiritual vitality]. word study 21 Little children [my dear ones, beloved], keep [guard, watch over] yourselves [your hearts, your souls] from [away from, apart from] idols [false gods, images, things worshipped in place of God]. word study
