1 Corinthians 6

BSA

1 If any [one of you, a believer] of you has a grievance [a matter, a dispute] against another, how dare [be bold, have the courage] he go to law [be judged, have a case decided] before the unrighteous [unjust, wicked] instead of before the saints [holy ones, set apart ones]! word study 2 Do you not know [are you unaware, have you not perceived] that the saints [holy ones, set apart] will judge [make decisions, condemn or punish] the world [the earthly realm, all its inhabitants]? And if you are to judge [evaluate, make decisions about] the world [the cosmos, all that exists], are you not competent [worthy, able] to judge [decide, settle] trivial [small, insignificant] cases [matters, disputes]? word study 3 Do you not know [are you unaware, have you not perceived] that we will judge [condemn, make decisions about] angels [messengers of God, heavenly beings]? How much more [to a greater extent, surely] the things [matters, issues] of this life [pertaining to our earthly existence]! word study 4 So if you need to settle [judge, decide] everyday [of this life] matters, do you appoint as judges [set to judge, seat in judgment] those [who are least esteemed] of no standing [of no account, without respect] in the church [assembly]? word study 5 I say [to move you to shame, speaking to your shame] this to your shame [utter humiliation, disgrace]. Is there really [can it be, is it so] no one [not a single person, none] among you [in your midst, within your community] wise [discerning, having good judgment] enough [able, capable] to arbitrate [judge, decide, settle disputes] between his brothers [fellow believers, brethren]? word study 6 Instead [on the contrary, but], one brother [a fellow Christian] goes to law [takes to court] against [in opposition to] another [a fellow believer], and this [this matter] in front of [before, in the presence of] unbelievers [those without faith, unbelieving ones]! word study 7 The very fact [already, even now] that you have lawsuits [judgments, disputes] among you means that you are thoroughly [completely, utterly] defeated [suffering loss, experiencing defeat] already. Why not rather [more, instead] be wronged [harm, injustice]? Why not rather [more, instead] be cheated [defrauded, deprived of something]? word study 8 Instead, you yourselves [do injustice, act unrighteously] cheat [defraud, deprive of rights] and do wrong [harm, act unjustly], even against your own [fellow Christian, spiritual] brothers [brethren, fellow believers]! word study 9 Do you not know [are you unaware, have you not perceived] that the wicked [unjust, unrighteous, those who act unjustly] will not inherit [receive as a gift, obtain] the kingdom [royal power, dominion, reign] of God [the one true deity, Creator of all]? Do not be deceived [led astray, misled]: Neither the sexually immoral [fornicators, those who engage in sexual sin], nor idolaters [those who worship false gods, idols], nor adulterers [those who cheat on their spouse, commit adultery], nor men who submit to or perform [engage in, practice] homosexual acts [sodomites, those who engage in same-sex relationships], word study 10 nor thieves [covetous, taking what is not theirs], nor the greedy [eager for gain, desiring more], nor drunkards [intoxicated, under the influence], nor verbal abusers [revilers, speaking abusively], nor swindlers [rapacious, taking advantage of others], will inherit [receive as a gift, possess] the kingdom [God’s royal power, dominion] of God [the one true deity]. word study 11 And that is what some of you were [previously, in the past]. But you were washed [cleaned, purified, freed from sin], you were sanctified [made holy, set apart], you were justified [declared righteous, made just], in the name [character, authority] of the Lord Jesus Christ [the Messiah, the Savior] and by the Spirit [the divine breath, the vital principle] of our God [the one true deity, the Creator]. word study 12 “Everything [all things, every matter] is permissible [lawful, allowed] for me,” but not everything [all things, every action] is beneficial [profitable, expedient]. “Everything [all things, every matter] is permissible [lawful, allowed] for me,” but I will not be mastered [brought under the power, controlled] by anything [any thing, one thing]. word study 13 “Food [meats, physical sustenance] for the stomach [belly, womb] and the stomach [belly, womb] for food [meats, physical sustenance],” but God [the supreme Creator, Lord] will destroy [bring to nothing, make useless] them both. The body [physical person, whole being] is not intended [not for, not meant] for sexual immorality [fornication, lewdness], but for the Lord [God, Master], and the Lord [God, Master] for the body [physical person, whole being]. word study 14 By His [divine, miraculous] power God [the Almighty, Creator] raised [brought back to life, resurrected] the Lord [Jesus, the Messiah] from the dead, and He will raise [resurrect, bring to life] us also [through His power, by His own strength]. word study 15 Do you not know [are you not aware, have you not perceived] that your bodies [physical persons, entire beings] are members [parts, limbs] of Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah]? Shall I then take [lift up, remove] the members [parts, limbs] of Christ [the Anointed One, Messiah] and unite them [join, make one] with a prostitute [harlot, one who engages in sexual sin]? Never [God forbid, may it not be]! word study 16 Or don’t you know [are you not aware, do you not perceive] that he who unites [joins, becomes one with] himself with a prostitute [harlot, loose woman] is one [united, in union] with her in body [physical person, flesh]? For it is said [declared, asserted], “The two [a couple, a pair] will become [be, exist as] one flesh [one physical body, united in intimacy].” word study 17 But he who [joins himself, is united to] unites himself with the Lord [God, the supreme Master] is one [in harmony, united as] with Him in spirit [the vital principle, breath of life]. word study 18 Flee from sexual immorality [including adultery and idolatry]. Every other sin [transgression, act of disobedience] a man can commit is outside [except, beyond] his body, but he who sins [commits, misses the mark] sexually [in a fleshly manner, against his own body] sins against his own [private, personal] body. word study 19 Do you not know [are you not conscious] that your body [physical person, whole being] is a temple [sacred place of worship, inner sanctuary] of the Holy [set apart, dedicated to God] Spirit [divine breath, vital principle] who is in you [dwelling within, residing in your heart], whom you have received [been given, acquired] from God [the one true deity, Creator]? You are not [by no means, absolutely not] your own [belonging to yourselves, under your own control]; word study 20 you were bought [purchased, redeemed] at a price [a great cost, a valuable sum]. Therefore [so, in this manner] glorify [honor, praise] God [the one true deity] with your body [your physical person, your entire being]. word study
