9 Bible Verses on Aggression

9 verses

Scripture teaches that believers should strive for peaceful relationships, being "slow to anger" and "quick to listen" as James 1:19 instructs. However, there are times when firm action is necessary, as seen in Jesus' cleansing of the temple in Matthew 21:12-13. Aggression can be a means of standing up for what is right, but it must be balanced with a commitment to nonviolence, as Jesus cautioned in Matthew 26:52. The Bible also acknowledges the role of governing authorities in maintaining order, as Romans 13:4 explains, and encourages believers to be peacemakers, as Matthew 5:9 teaches.

My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger,
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him. “For all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not carry the sword in vain. He is God’s servant, an agent of retribution to the wrongdoer.
Then Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves. And He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’ But you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’ ”
Get up, for this matter is your responsibility, and we will support you. Be strong and take action!”
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
