12 Bible Verses on Age and Wisdom

12 verses

As people mature, they often gain valuable insight and understanding, a principle reflected in the wisdom literature of the Bible. In Job 12:12, it is noted that wisdom is associated with the aged, who have gained experience and knowledge over time. The book of Proverbs, such as in 1:7 and 16:31, teaches that wisdom begins with reverence for God and is a quality that can be developed through life, with age bringing a deeper understanding. The example of Timothy, a young leader in the early church, encourages believers to set an example for others, regardless of age, as seen in 1 Timothy 4:12. Through these passages, the Bible shows that age and wisdom are connected, but not exclusively, as wisdom can be found in people of all ages.

Job 12:12
Wisdom is found with the elderly, and understanding comes with long life.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Job 32:7
I thought that age should speak, and many years should teach wisdom.
Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is attained along the path of righteousness.
Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly plague. He will cover you with His feathers; under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the calamity that destroys at noon. Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, no harm will come near you. You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD your dwelling— my refuge, the Most High— no evil will befall you, no plague will approach your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent. “Because he loves Me, I will deliver him; because he knows My name, I will protect him. When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.”
Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you may be wise the rest of your days.
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere.
Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, until I proclaim Your power to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.
The glory of young men is their strength, and gray hair is the splendor of the old.
Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you.
before the dust returns to the ground from which it came and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
