Total Depravity

10 sermons

The biblical concept of Total Depravity, also known as Total Inability, posits that humanity's sinful nature renders individuals completely unable to seek God or come to faith without divine intervention. As stated in Romans 3:10-18, humanity's inherent sinfulness is emphasized, with verse 10 quoting Psalms 14:1-3 and Psalms 53:1-3, which declare that "there is none righteous, no, not one" and that all have turned away from God. This understanding is further reinforced in Ephesians 2:1-3, where it is written that prior to salvation, individuals are "dead in trespasses and sins" and are therefore incapable of initiating a relationship with God. Ultimately, this doctrine underscores the necessity of God's gracious initiative in salvation, as expressed in Romans 8:28, where it is written that "all things work together for good to those who love God."
