Prophetic Word
The term "prophetic word" in the Bible refers to messages or revelations that are communicated by God through chosen individuals, known as prophets. These messages often serve various purposes, including guidance, warning, encouragement, and the foretelling of future events. Prophets in the biblical context, such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, were instrumental in conveying God's will and plans to His people, often addressing social injustices, calling for repentance, and proclaiming hope for restoration. For instance, in 2 Peter 1:20-21, it states, "No prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."The prophetic word also encompasses both foretelling (predictive prophecy) and forthtelling (proclaiming God's truth). For example, the prophetic word can be seen in the fulfillment of promises regarding the coming Messiah, as seen in Isaiah 9:6-7, which speaks of the birth of a child who would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The importance of the prophetic word continues into the New Testament, where it is affirmed that believers are called to listen to the prophetic voice, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21, which advises believers not to treat prophecies with contempt but to test them and hold on to what is good. Thus, the prophetic word is an essential aspect of God's communication with humanity, guiding them according to His divine purposes.
