Happiness
In the Bible, happiness is often associated with a deep, abiding sense of joy and contentment that arises from a relationship with God and living according to His will. The Hebrew word for happiness, "ashre," frequently appears in the Psalms and indicates a state of blessedness or fulfillment, often linked to obedience to God's commandments (e.g., Psalm 1:1-3). This concept is closely tied to the idea of "blessedness" rather than mere momentary pleasure; it emphasizes a holistic sense of well-being that encompasses spiritual, emotional, and physical dimensions. In the New Testament, happiness is further explored through the teachings of Jesus, particularly in the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:3-12. Here, Jesus declares that those who are poor in spirit, mourn, are meek, hunger and thirst for righteousness, and endure persecution are "blessed" (which can be interpreted as happy). This underscores that true happiness is not found in external circumstances but in a heart aligned with God's kingdom values. Thus, biblical happiness is deeply rooted in spiritual fulfillment, moral integrity, and the joy of knowing and serving God, contrasting sharply with the fleeting nature of worldly happiness.
