Defense
In the biblical context, "defense" can refer to both physical and spiritual protection. The Hebrew word for defense, particularly in the Old Testament, often conveys the idea of a stronghold or refuge. For instance, in Psalm 18:2, David proclaims, "The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." Here, the metaphor of God as a fortress underscores the concept of divine protection and security against adversaries. In the New Testament, "defense" takes on a more spiritual connotation, especially in the context of apologetics or the defense of the faith. Philippians 1:7 highlights this when Paul expresses that he is in chains for the defense of the Gospel. The term can also relate to the idea of standing firm against spiritual attacks, as illustrated in Ephesians 6:10-11, where believers are urged to "put on the whole armor of God" to stand against the schemes of the devil. Thus, in a biblical sense, defense encompasses both the physical safeguarding of God's people and the spiritual readiness to uphold and protect their beliefs.
