Brother Yun

Brother Yun (1958–present). Born Liu Zhenying on January 1, 1958, in Nanyang, Henan, China, Brother Yun is a Chinese house church leader, evangelist, and author, renowned for his role in the Back to Jerusalem movement. Raised in poverty, he converted to Christianity at 16 in 1974 after his mother’s renewed faith led to his father’s miraculous healing from lung cancer, sparking a family revival. Lacking a Bible, Yun fasted and prayed for one, receiving it after a divine vision guided evangelists to deliver it. He memorized Scripture, including the Gospel of Matthew, and began preaching at 16, reciting entire chapters to villagers, leading to widespread conversions despite China’s clampdown on Christianity in the 1980s and 1990s. As a house church leader, he faced severe persecution, arrested multiple times, tortured, and imprisoned for over seven years, including a 74-day fast he claims sustained him miraculously. In 1997, he escaped Zhengzhou Maximum Security Prison, attributing it to divine intervention, and fled to Germany, where he gained asylum. Yun authored The Heavenly Man (2002) with Paul Hattaway, detailing his persecution and miracles, and Living Water (2008), sharing his teachings; the former won the UK Christian Book of the Year in 2003. Married to Deling, with two children, he now ministers globally, advocating missions to unevangelized nations. He said, “We shouldn’t pray for a lighter load to carry, but a stronger back to endure!”

I am not ashamed of the gospel because it's the power of God for salvation of everyone who believes, first for the Jews, then for Gentiles. For in the gospel, a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from the first to last, just as it is written, the righteous will live by faith. Jesus said, the all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me, therefore you shall go and make all the nations to my disciples. I'm one of your Christian brothers, Brother Yun. For the sake of the gospel, I have been unified with Jesus' suffering and been arrested and thrown to prison many times. Since I was 17 years old and the heavenly calling came upon my life, there has been one word coming from the Lord ongoingly alive in my heart. And that's what I read from Romans, that I'm not ashamed of gospel because it is power of God for salvation of everyone who believes. And when in obedience to this calling to witness about Jesus, I went out those years, I became a wanted criminal and after they've been chasing me for about 10 years, they throw me to prison. And praise God, they cannot lock in the power of the word of God. As I was in prison during the night, I was dreaming that I'm going to run throughout the whole world and finish the work of the gospel. But you have to understand that it was a real security prison where they locked me in. And I decided that if they don't allow me to preach the gospel in the person, they cannot hinder me to be and become a living disciple of Jesus Christ. And so when the warden, they took a break and they were not watching what you were doing, I was very eager to finish all my work I have to do in the prison for God's glory. And little by little, the mind of the warden was changed towards me because he saw that that I'm obedient and I achieved the goal that has been given to me daily. And of course, after you have to be in prison for many years, always during the Christmas time, your family and your home church and the people there became very, very dear to you and they were missing you as well. And they prepared two brothers, Brother Enfong and another brother who came to visit me in the prison. And they traveled more than 300 miles with buses more than one day and one night in order to make their way to visit me in the prison. And you know that because I was in a prison for the sake of the gospel, they were extremely cautious before and after Christmas so that we would not be able to celebrate anything or have visitors. And but I have always believed that Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth. So I started to pray with other brothers, Lord, you are able to make it happen that I can meet with brothers around Christmas. And the second day, as we were working hard outside on the field, we were removing big stones and preparing a fish pond. I went to this policeman who had been favorable towards me and I said, would it be possible for me to meet with these visitors who have arrived from very far away and to see me? And I know that because there is power in the word of God. So I only spoke with him maybe one to two minutes, but I really felt that the power of God went into this and started to move the heart of this man. And this policeman said, I don't, I cannot give you this privilege because the command has come from the higher authorities. And then I said to this policeman, you know, they have traveled so far away and here is very isolated place. There are no toilets here. Can't I take these two visitors and bring them to the bathrooms of the prison and so before they get returned back home? And you have to understand that it was a very dirty place. It was the main toilets of this big prison. And as we enter into the bathroom of the prison, I immediately kneel down. And I said to these two brothers, you kneel with me. Now we will remember how Jesus was born in the stable among the animals. And I took hold of the hands of the brothers and say, I was saying, thank you, Jesus, that because of our sins, you were willing to come to be unified with our suffering, our pain and our sicknesses. And I said to the Lord, Lord, you were willing because of your great love towards us to be born in the dirtiest stable. And you don't mind to be with us as we are in this dirty bathroom. And I took hold of the brothers and I said, you never should forget them. Forget that we are as we are following Jesus. We are following him on the road of the stables and on the difficulties and a lot of challenges. And I said to the Lord, Lord, you were willing because of your great love towards us to be born in the dirtiest stable. We are following him on the road of the stables and on the difficulties and a lot of challenges.
