Frank Viola

Frank Anthony Viola (1964–present). Born on October 12, 1964, in New Jersey to an Italian-American family, Frank Viola is an author, speaker, and blogger focused on deepening Christian spirituality, not a traditional preacher. Raised in upstate New York and later Florida, he converted to Christianity at 16, fully committing to faith after a period of nominal belief. Without formal seminary training, Viola, inspired by autodidacts like A.W. Tozer and Watchman Nee, began teaching in the 1990s as a public school teacher, leading students to faith and forming Christian groups. In 1998, he planted an organic church in Florida, emphasizing Christ-centered community over institutional structures, a focus of his early works like Pagan Christianity (2008, with George Barna) and Reimagining Church (2008). Since 2009, his ministry, The Deeper Journey, has shifted to Jesus studies and aiding the poor, producing books like Jesus Manifesto (2010, with Leonard Sweet), God’s Favorite Place on Earth (2013), and The Untold Story of the New Testament Church (2025), with over 600,000 copies sold. His blog, Beyond Evangelical, and podcast, Christ is All, rank among the top Christian platforms. Married with children, he lives in Florida, consulting writers and speaking globally. Viola said, “The centrality of Jesus Christ is the heartbeat of the Christian faith.”
