Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Apostle 13, verse 22 and last part. Today's Bhagam, I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, which will fulfill all my will. I can see from God's hand the heavenly plan, the heavenly pattern for this service of ministry. First of all, we have to make sure that we have been called by him and also accepted by him. And we thank God, all among us who have heard this call, who have said, Lord, here am I, send me. And thank God for all the experiences we have gone through in the past three years in that service. It is a life-long training and life-long experience. We have seen how Lord had to use so many situations, so many circumstances with David, how to hear the voice, how to know his will. We have seen how Lord had to use so many situations, so many circumstances with David, how to hear the voice, how to know his will. Even though he came upon the throne, even then he had to keep in mind the very same lesson. And we see that in the 2nd Samuel, 2 Samuel 5, responsibly Psalm 17. But he had the complete charge of the whole army and the kingdom. Not depending upon the army, no. Manifestation came against him is requiring some law. Shall I go up to the flesh? Will thou deliver them into my hands? See how David has learned to talk with the Lord so freely and with assurance. Now you find as we begin to follow him, we have to face all kinds of enemies, opposition and persecution. With all our advantages, we cannot depend upon any human's own position. And thus we are allowed to see him later on. We have to seek our Lord's help constantly, even smoking. Even though we might have a lot to give, many messages, we require grace and help, not even for the simple message, but for the public work. We have to say Lord, touch my lips, and my tongue, and my throat, and my mind, and my brain for this intermission. Sometimes it becomes dry. Let me see how the Philistines came again against David. Verse 22, And the Philistines came again and set themselves in the valley of Raphael. Now going by the Philistines, we should go straight away against them, knowing that now I know how to defeat them. We are not depending upon the politics of the Philistines. Verse 23, When David was told of the Lord, he said, Thou shalt not go up, but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against them. When David was told of the Lord, he said, Thou shalt not go up, but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against them. Verse 24, And it will be, when thou hear the sound of a going in the top of the mountain trees, then thou shalt be set thyself, and then shall the Lord go out before thee, to smite the host of the thieves. A lovely lesson is this spiritual warfare has gone backwards. Even though he declared that himself in 1 Samuel, chapter 17, verse 47, Even though he declared that himself in 1 Samuel, chapter 17, verse 47, And all the assembly shall know, Lord David not restore his fear, for the battle is the Lord, and He will give you to Mounthead. You might do this lesson in a past year, but we have to remind ourselves every day of the very same lesson. Lord, this is thy battle. I only want thy anointing and thy message and thy hand. We have now this time God giving David a totally different plan for victory. You say, you wait for a while, and bring your army behind the thieves. You don't go the front. I begin to wash early shafts of the mountain trees. You hear some sound. Now then, now I have gone before you to fall on your behalf. Now only they will know the meaning of the moving of the vein, and that of the Madhusik. But others did not know. It was the first he knew, or his own men knew, what was happening as they saw the wheel moving on the top. Now for them it was just an ordinary event, or the wind blowing on the top of the tree. But David knew it. It was the Spirit of God. Now I must discern myself. God has gone before me. There is a secret for a very effective ministry. Be sure God has gone before. Whenever we go for a one hour, two hour, three hour ministry, when we go for a house visiting or opening, or we go for any public meeting, whether we arrange a special campaign or an ordinary campaign, we are governed by the weather and the number and the distance. We are governed by the moving of the Spirit of God on the top of the tree. I have already told you an ordinary event. Now I know my Lord has gone before me. And you begin to feel the presence of God in an abnormal way. And it is a very shallow warning again, in the very love of David, in the very same matter. In the life of David, there is a serious issue. 2 Samuel 24, verse 1, and again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. And He moved David against them to say, Go and number Israel and Judah. Then the Lord said to Israel, 70,000 people died. See how little they are, again David said to Israel, in one day. He wanted to number the people, even though he was warned by God's people. He wanted to make sure how many fighting men were in the kingdom. The general tells him, that even though there may be a hundred times more than that, they are not going to save you. God has not helped you all these years to be men. Because of your obedience and faith, you have enjoyed victory. And the sin was so great, that 70,000 men died one day. Now we have to keep in mind the same lesson. And we preachers are in great danger of the very same temptation. But we have seen the Lord working mightily in us, among us, for some time. And we have lost so many, some are ready now. We will become dry one day. There were two well-known preachers from America in Kerala. So one man said to another man, Brother, have you got any message for this evening meeting? He said, no. He said, why are you saying no? When I came to India, I had prepared 34 messages. I have used 33 out of 34. Only one message left. And I am saving it for the place called Maramon after few days. I shall not prepare. India will be very much strong. I am saving that message for that place. Because that is a very sad thing. And they warned all of us. We cannot become dry many times. But when we know how to touch our God, and depend upon Him alone for every small mistake, every day, you find yourself fresh and full of life. Now can you see how Lord was leading David step by step? Now see how David was leading David step by step. In 2 Samuel 7, and from verse 1, irresponsibly, and it came to pass, when the king sat in the house, and the Lord had given him rest, round about from all his enemies. Second verse. Now, just light is shining into him. Off he had rest from all the enemies. And he had proven God's faithfulness in a wonderful way. Yes, he had seen how God had led him all these years. Then a thought came to him. I desire to stay in the house of Cedar. But the ark of God is living in tents or curtains. He wanted to build a very grand house for the ark of God. Now, him listening is a very grand idea. He is so zealous for God. Why should you also not be in a tent, while he must be living in such a big house? God is now speaking to him through the prophet Nathan. God is saying, did I at any time ask any of my prophets, or my servants, to build a house for me? Now, the prophet said, I have walked with all the enemies. Take I a word, with any of the prophets, or any of the prophets of Israel, am I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, why will ye not be in the house of Cedar? God has never demanded from any of his servants or people, to build him such a big house for him. God does not live in a building built by man's hands. Acts 7 chapter 7, verse 48, The most high well is not in temples, made with hands, as is the prophet, heaven is my throne, earth is my footstool, but how will ye build me, O Lord, or what is the place of my rest? Now, there is a quotation from the book of Isaiah, in chapter 36. Now, David was only seeking some grand looking shelter for the ark of God. But he never knew what kind of house God wanted. It has been in the great darkness throughout the world, all the past centuries. Just as David wanted to build some grand building as a shelter for the ark, he did not know he still had to build many, many grand looking buildings throughout the world, throughout the ages. Full shine, death and darkness comes in. They do not know the meaning of God's house. Even though they have spent so much money and material in building the big building, but never learned the meaning of God's house. So God has saved David from darkness. In the book of Ephesians, 2 Samuel 7.11 And I have seen it time, I have commanded judges to be over my people here, have clad the rest from all in. Also the Lord telleth thee, he will build thee an house. Lord telleth thee, he will make thee an house. He will build thee a house. The house for God. God will build the house. God will build the house. Never God was saved David at that time, was not dear to him. That's why God took him who had that powerful experience. The first chronicle and chapter 13. First chronicle and chapter 13. It's very good to show how David was in a very subtle way being carried away by his own will for God. It's very good to show how David was in a very subtle way being carried away by his own will for God. Human feel. It's a very much darkness among God's people all these centuries. This is not scary. First chronicle chapter 13. First verse one. And now such a good intention ending in a tragedy. He was fooled for God. He is telling all the people. The ark of God is lying so far from us. Let us bring the ark of God near us. Then we can see the face of God more often. And he converses with the capitals of thousands and hundreds and with everything. You must see the people in the ark. They are a couple of thousands and hundreds and everything. Then he gathered all other men to put some Jerusalem. And he said, let us bring again the ark of God. And verse four. All the congregation said they would do so. The king was right in the eyes of all the people. Not the phrase, king was right in the eyes of all the people. All the living men are saying, David, yes, whatever you have is very, very good. And we are one with you. And Arjuna is a very, very grand person. Verse eight. And David, in all degree of play before God, all their might and spirit. The hearth and stockings and cymbals and trumpets. He must have been a very, very impressive person. All these gifted, talented musicians were brought forward. Those who could sing. Those who could play harps and sardines. Cymbals and cymbals and trumpets. David, most gifted musicians he ever brought forward. And they are singing and playing all their might. David is crossing in the ark of God. David is crossing in the ark of God. They are very, very proud they brought the ark and the new cross. Don't know how. How they forgot the divine order. In the book of Numbers chapter four and number chapter seven, God made so clear, so clear, so plain, the ark was never to be carried in a cross. In the book of Numbers chapter four and seven, God made so clear, so clear, so plain, the ark was never to be carried in a cross. They have all the details of how they had to march, how they had to carry on. They have all the details of how they had to march, how they had to carry on. So they had to be rescued. But as they were crossing the Levites, David was crossing the captains of thousands and hundreds of angels. And that's why everything ended in a failure, a tragedy. He had to pay a very high price for that lesson. Now we may also talk about the church, other people, and the body and so on. Now we may also talk about the church, other people, and the body and so on. Unless we get a fuller divine revelation of the church, we will be a failure. And that's why God has brought David upon the cross. And that's why God has brought David upon the cross. On two occasions. That's searching for the place where you separate the chaff and the grain. Now we find how he repented in chapter 15. First Chronicle in chapter 15. Now please read Psalm 84 verse 3. Please read Psalm 84 verse 3. See, rather than serving the captains of the armies and the leaders, now he was serving the Levites. See, rather than serving the captains of the armies and the leaders, now he was serving the Levites. And they began to follow divine order as revealed so clearly, so plainly through Moses and God's word. And Moses said, Now they don't bring these worldly qualified musicians for playing. All that job was done by the Levites. We see that from verse 15. And we see in the whole chapter how divine order was found out and followed. So in his reading in chapter 13, he was taught to imitate the prophets who had sent the ark of God back from their country in Newcastle. And that was the advice given by the lords of the Philistines. But we cannot follow the Philistines. How several grand their advice and their counsel may be. Now you find for the building of the house of God, May we know the word of God and live with God's order. May we know the word of God and live with God's order. They tried to imitate or follow these worldly wise men of different countries. And that's how they brought the so-called prosecution. Now some called it blue book, some called it other book, some called it... And that's how they brought the prosecution. They brought the so-called prosecution. And they are bookers of the blue book. rules for the elevation. Many years ago, I happened to be in a meeting of those people. Only as a visitor. There may be about 20 different leading pastors of different districts. They are having their annual council meeting. Not one had a Bible with them. But they all have a blue book. And they went on quarreling among themselves about the rules of the book. After a while I said, can you give me a brief statement in one word? Why don't you use Bible in your talks and discussions? Do you find it right to answer to all your questions in the book of Isaiah? Now we can say truthfully, much of the barrenness today is because of these man-made rules. Even though they may have been framed by very, very clever, well-known scholars, but we cannot build the house of God with a human wisdom and human plan. God is not after any congregation or a fellowship or a sect or a group or domination. He wants a house to contain fullness for eternity. This is what David had to find a place which God wanted for the house. That happened in the second stanza of chapter 24, where David repented. The very same site became the site of temple. Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem in Mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared unto David the father. In that place, David had prepared in the second floor a wooden Jebusite. After every Jebusite was given out of Jerusalem and Zion, David could see the very same site occupied by Jebusites called by God. It was only after that that God gave David the right to build the house of God. After that, David began to pray. David said, The Lord may be understand in writing upon me. When God showed the pattern of the seven-legged to Moses on the mountain, he only saw the pattern. He knew the meaning of it. Exodus 25, and verse 40. Look there thou made them of their pattern which was showed thee in the mountain. This is a wonderful thing. Moses saw in detail the whole pattern of the seven-legged to God's hand. But he did not know the meaning of the details. In the case of David, God goes a step further. As he is saying to Solomon, All this said David, All that said David, The Lord made me understand in writing by the hand upon me. All that said David, The Lord made me understand in writing by the hand upon me. Imagine that day, when God gave David the plan, writing everything to him. Imagine that day, when God gave David the plan, writing everything to him. God said to David, Do you understand what is here? No, I don't. I can see all the details. But I do not understand. It says, By the hand upon me, you will not understand. God's hand came upon David. Now David understood. Now I know, now I know. God's spirit came upon David in a special way to give understanding. Then he began to see what kind of house God wanted. When God first spoke to him, When God first spoke to him, He thought only to speak about his family. There are so many people who get divorced for their marriage. But God had much more in view when he said to him. But God had much more in view when he said to him. So God said to him in 2 Samuel 7 verse 11, Last part, As the Lord shall it be, he will make it in house. As the Lord shall it be, he will make it in house. Then he began to thank God for the promise he gave to him. Isaiah chapter 25, Now O Lord God, The Lord thou hast spoken, Sending thy servant, And concerning his house, Establish it forever, And do as thou hast said. Thou Lord God, Has revealed to thy servant, Saying, I will build thee a house. Therefore hath thy servant found it hard To pray this prayer unto thee. Therefore now let it please thee, O bless the house of thy servant. May God in you forever. Now he was only single in his own family. As the prophecy that God was showing to him, How in his seed he will build an everlasting habitation. Now many years, When God's hand came upon him and saw the pattern, Then he began to see. We have to go through many, many sorrowful, painful experiences To see something of God's house. God may bring us not only upon two, But may be twenty-five, Or even more than twenty-five, Passive loans for that purpose. Now I will begin to see something, Little bit of thy house. I will see later on, That by God's help, Worker's house is now building to us. But we will find, He was very clearly. I say, I am in front, I request you to read the Hebrew 3rd chapter again upon your knees. Now you know what your share got out. Hebrew 3rd chapter, Which it is possibly, But may the Lord help us, To read the verse clearly, To know our share, In our building of love. But if I may come upon us, May see clearly, The heavenly pattern of the heavenly house. Then we should see, Whether we are only building a shelter, For the house of God, Or the house of God. May the Lord help us. Now unto him, Able to keep us from falling, And presents us, Firmness of the glory, With exceeding joy, To thee only, Lord of our saviour, The Lord with the glory, In the power, Both now, And evermore. Amen.
