Norman Grubb

Norman Percy Grubb (1895–1993). Born on August 2, 1895, in Hampstead, England, to an Anglican vicar, Norman Grubb became a missionary, evangelist, and author. Educated at Marlborough College, he served as a lieutenant in World War I, earning the Military Cross, though wounded in the leg. At Trinity College, Cambridge, he helped found what became InterVarsity Christian Fellowship but left in 1920 to join his fiancée, Pauline Studd, daughter of missionary C.T. Studd, in the Belgian Congo. There, for ten years, he evangelized and translated the New Testament into Bangala. After Studd’s death in 1931, Grubb led the Worldwide Evangelization Crusade (WEC) as general secretary until 1965, growing it from 35 to 2,700 missionaries, and co-founded the Christian Literature Crusade. He authored books like C.T. Studd: Cricketer & Pioneer, Rees Howells, Intercessor, and Yes, I Am, focusing on faith and Christ’s indwelling presence. Retiring to Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, he traveled, preaching “Christ in you” until his death on December 15, 1993. Grubb said, “Good is only the other side of evil, but God is good and has no opposite.”

It says here, you, I, Norman Grubb, as an independent, have been crucified with Christ. I'm not there as an independent person running my own show on the face. I'm not on Satan. I'm out. Not on Satan. This I, which remains, lives. No, it doesn't live. It used to be Satan's I, is now Christ's I. Nevertheless, I live yet not I, but Christ is in me. Now, I had to grab that with my teeth. I put some teeth in my face. I said, I'll say that. I didn't feel a thing. You don't feel a thing. Face is not feeling. Face is choice. I say it because God says it. And after five hours, I get up. Not a very good draftsman. I drew a tombstone. Here lies Norman Grubb, crucified with Christ. I didn't know much about the resurrection. I was more on the resurrection side. But I did it. I went back on that. Nothing happened to me for maybe a couple of years after that. Then about, oh, I see. So you never know when the conscience comes back. I told you, when you are saved, that came back to you, oh, he's my saviour. Probably immediately. You got the peace. But this time, well, I didn't. God knows how it works out. But I never left that fact. I took that fact. I had the God's word, and God's word echoes back to me and says, OK. He gives the OK to my faith. But I must have the faith that that's what I am, and that's what I speak, and that's what I say. And the OK comes back and holy peace, that's how. Well, that's it. I've known that for years now. That's my permanent joke, I say. Not I, but he. It's a joke to you. It's not a joke to me, anyhow. So, you see, you move. Now, then, now you can be a healthy person, because you've been a dead and risen person. Do you get my point? Hello. Glad to see you. We'll get the last five minutes. Perhaps more like five and fifty minutes. We'll go on for a bit. But, you see, oh, I was going to say this. You're a safe person when you've been to a time in which you've died to being yourself. Not died to your sins. That word out of the press is not quite right. Died to yourself, as being a self of this false idea of independence. You died to that, where it's going to, I see, I'm to drop this whole idea. See, that's why the Bible says you died to the law. Now, Romans 6 says you died to sin, which is the spirit of Satan in you, in Christ's death. Died to the law. Why? The law is there to show me up when I'm reliant on my self-effort. If you can do it, do it. So, while I'm there, the law says do it, then you get caught out, that's when you get caught out in sin, of course. Do it. You couldn't do it, that's the way it's done with sin. You couldn't keep the law. And so the law made us guilty, didn't it? It showed us up. Now, that law you're dead to in Christ, if you cease to be an independent person. So you're dead to the law in Christ. Why? Because you're not an independent person, you're a Christ person. The real you is Christ. You're just the outer agency. When you're like that, there's no more law to shout to. The law can only shout to you if you're there to shout to. If you're dead, you're not there to shout to. When you're dead, when you say, as an independent, I'm not running my own show, I'm Christ Jesus. Now what happens? Now you are into a new life. I've got to jump, now you're into a new life. I'm now talking about, um, uh, uh, the, the, the, this consciousness has come, somehow it has here. We know, somehow we do know it, didn't we? Now two things happen to us. One is, well they're both pretty healthy. Uh, one is this, until I'd known this, I'd been condemning myself, that's Romans 7, because I thought, I ought not. So I, I ought to pray more and don't. I ought to love more and don't. I ought to be calm and I'd lose my temper more. So I'd be guilty and knocking myself over, condemning myself. That's the old life. Um, until I say, drop it, it's not for you to change it, don't try and change it, you're only a pot, leave a pot to be a pot. Turn your attention and let the water do the stuff inside the pot. Turn your attention. And so you move in that towards the faith. Now when you move in the faith, and the Spirit gives you the witness, he's in you, now the first few things happen, you begin to accept yourself. It's not until you're a Nazi, you are nothing at all. You're beautifully precious, every bit of you precious to God. You begin to love yourself. You're God's precious person. Your emotions are what God comes through. Your will is what God comes through. Your mind is what God comes through. You become a beautiful person, you accept yourself as an effective person. You come back as an effective person. Because you, you, it's gone on, it's no longer a business of you running yourself, it's running you. So that's one, that's the first great asset that comes to you when you come into this new Christ consciousness. The other matter is this. Temptation becomes adventure instead of something you want to flee from. What I mean, you see, we're in this world here, it's our privilege to mix with the world, to feel like the world, then we can contribute to the world. And so we're meant to be people who are bang open to every temptation, more so because we're more sensitive. You're more sensitive when you're saved than when you're unsaved. That's why every healthy person becomes healthy at a time when you're more miserable and saved than you were when you were unsaved, because you're more sensitive. You turn, you get it back to you a little joy later on, which is part of who you are. Now, conscious that you're wide open. Now in one way, you won't be tempted the same, because before you knew and got it, Christ running you, you were sufficiently tempted. What you fear comes on you. A lot of our temptations go, oh, I'm awful, I should run into that old sin, and you're sniffing out sin, sin sniffs you out. So when you sniff out the sin, sin sniffs life after you. So, oh, I'm afraid, don't you afraid? No. A dear brother and I say, talking to that great fellow yesterday, that Harold Hughes, he is going pot for Jesus, that's what he was saying. Oh, he's great. But he's out all the way for God. A rather lonely life, more so than most of us. I love extremists, he's an extremist. Oh, our hearts went together. He said, Brother, you encourage me with one thing, and I must say I have fears sometimes. I'm so alone in this utter walk. I wonder if I missed the way. Oh, I said, Brother, get it right, there's no fear in love. If you're not you, but Christ, leave Him to show you the way. If you're wrong, say, God, you put me right. If you want me to go to hell, I go to hell, that's your show. Don't try and change yourself. Say, God, if I'm wrong, you show me. You come all off ought I to be so and so. You come off that. So, in some senses, you're less tempted because you're not bothered so much, but you are tempted. Now, temptation is very good practice. Why? We're in a world which is totally negative. The world's self for self, not self for God, isn't it? So, everything around you is a pride, and self gratification, and flesh, and all these things get us all the time. And they're pouring on you, the whole world's made of that. Now, that's temptation. Now, what's temptation mean? Temptation means to forget for a moment that you're Christ in you. For instance, if I'm suddenly afraid, Christ isn't afraid, is He? He knows His stuff. He's not afraid. If I'm afraid, what's it mean? I forget I'm Christ in me. I think I'm myself. I slip back momentarily into a false idea I'm myself. And temptation, therefore, is making me think I'm like this. Now, when you didn't know Christ in you, oh, you're in trouble. When you know Christ in you, oh, wait a minute, how silly I am. Come back where you belong. You know, come on, Christ, you're having it. Your temptation becomes good practice to get back. You see, I can't go too far into this tonight. But, I mean, if our emotions are so and so, I can't forgive so-and-so. I hate so-and-so. You know, I resent so-and-so. All right, that's okay. That's not sin. That's just your self part of you, your soul part, being tempted to respond to it. We have disliking this and so-and-so. Now, what do you do? You don't condemn yourself. You say, of course I'm like that. But, you see, that's not what I am. I'm Christ in me. And you move back. As some of us know or hear, one lady, I only met her once, and it's worked in and out fairly well, but she found this about Christ in her. And then, I'd never heard from her again and didn't write to her, but she knew my name. And about, maybe six months ago now, I received a letter from her. I think it must have been the day her husband walked out on her. And she said, what am I going to do? I'm more or less Christ in me, she said. I said, my husband walked out on me, left me with the kids, and I'm full of rage and hate. I do anything. I'm all torn up. What do you think you're saying to me, Christ in me? It ain't working very well, she said. Are you telling me Christ is in you? What shall I do about it? I said to her, I didn't say Christ is in you. You said so. It's your fault you said so. I said, listen, listen to me. I said, if Christ is in you, you're a human, and you must feel like that, you should feel like that. Of course you'll feel like that. Of course you'll feel like that. You've been deserted and hurt. Of course you do. But if you know Christ, you say, that's not your real self. That's your outer soul's self-reaction. Which gives you, I say, Christ, you're in me. Your will's always perfect. Your will, you're in me. Go back to Christ in you. Then I made a little joke on her. I said, you're in for trouble, Selma. So unfortunately, Christ loves the husband who's run away from him, and the girl he's run away with. So you've got to begin to love the people who've left you. And you've got good adventure in front of you now. So she took it. She wrote back a little later on, it's this in and out. Sometimes it acts, sometimes it doesn't. She's on route. But I can't say more because I'm short of time. You get the point there. So, temptation's good practice. You get it all the time. Temptation isn't sin. Temptation is good practice of pulling yourself out in different directions to give you a chance to bounce back. And you can bounce back when you know who's in you. If he's up here, you've got a job to find him. If I'm up here, it's you. My real favorite, you're my real favorite. Oh, you're heavenly, you see. I can't love that person. I'm with your love, I love him. If you say, I'm love, I'm with your peace, I've got your peace, you can talk that language. And it comes through you. The final issue, that will end. We can't get into too much of it. When you move into the final meaning of it all, we're personal brothers. Now, this is the final big thing. The only nature God has is brothers. God is love. His whole nature, his being, he is there to fulfill other people's needs. Now, if you and I express to God, we're that. So the new person, the new nature, isn't your nature. The new nature is God, in his self-giving nature, expressed by you. You are Mr. Self-Giver. And you begin to have a new life. When you begin to recognize that everything that comes to you, comes because it's some means by which God will express himself through you. Um. Uh. Now that, I, I, I suppose I've said too much already, but, uh, that's, um, uh, that's why the, um, um, the key to this is, um, when I can stretch out, um, and see only God in every situation. You see, um, uh, uh, we've, and you had to stretch out. To see only Christ replacing you. You had to stretch there, from self to Christ. To stretch out the real you is Christ. And your own self, just an agency you're using. You've got to stretch out there. Now your next stretch is that everything is God's purpose. Everything is God's purpose. Evil as well as good. The Bible says, blessed are the pure in heart, for they see God. Pure is unmixed. When we've got mixed outlook, to see good and evil, you don't see God. When you only see God, you see pure. How can I only see, how can I only see God? Because evil is freedom misused, that's all. See, God had to make us free because we're a people. We have to operate as free people forever. We're God's agents, we're going to run the universe. Freely, we're going to use our minds, our wills. Underneath is Christ, of course. He's going to be operating in our freedom. Behind our freedom is He, of course. That's this new thing. But therefore, misuse has been what had to be. The world had to go through this misuse period. All evil is the product of the misuse of self. Out of this hate and fear and so on has come all this corruption and so on. So God's not directly responsible. But because they're all His precious people. And His Son redeemed us all if we know it. He chose a whole lot of us if we take it. He came down here, He loves every one of us. And He's there at the heart of everybody. There's that light of Christ in everybody underneath. Now, therefore, whatever happens, what I'm to say is this. That's a rotten condition. God meant it. God meant it. God meant out of freedom, freedom is to have freedom. Otherwise you touch freedom. You can never touch it. Communists touch freedom and make slavery. When you touch freedom, you make slavery. God couldn't be God and touch freedom. So you have to say, we're free. And that is because you're free, you've got this consequence. Lots of things happen in the world. Sometimes they're a direct consequence of their own sins. Often they're not. Often they're the consequence of the disease, the corruption which we all participate in. Okay, okay. We're all mixed up in this messed up world. Now, when I understand God meant that as a consequence of the freedom in this world, but because He's a God of love, He meant it because He's got a redeeming purpose in it. Now, I turn my eyes away from my personal... Oh, look at that. That's horrible. It is. You meant it, God. But you have a purpose in it. Now, I change the whole attitude to unsaved people. If you have an unsaved person, got a habit or something, oh, I wish they'd stop this thing. Or a saved person can sit on your toes like you sit on theirs. Whichever way it may be. Oh, that annoys me. Now, while I say it annoys me, I judge them. When I say, Oh, I don't like God, you meant it. Oh, you meant that person to be annoying as a person. You meant her to be like that. It's not my show, it's your show. Once it changes your spirit. If a person's in a part of the scene, alcohol or something, you say, God meant it? Oh, I don't know. God meant that? Now, what happens? You say, God, I accept this person as they are. You don't judge a person, you accept them as they are. Of course, there are certain conditions. I mean, you may rebuke your own people. I'm not talking about details. General principles. Now, when you've got that principle, what do you do? You're free from judgmentalism. You aren't pointing fingers at the man's feet. You say, God, you've got a purpose in this. And I now move to say, you meant that person to be stewed up by his sins, that he may know he needs a savior? And I say, go on, stir him up, Lord. Put the heat on, go on. Because that's how they learn. Didn't you learn that way? Didn't you get banged over the head to get ready to be saved? You should be. So, you see? I only tell you, your whole attitude to life changes. When you dare to practice, that's a rotten thing. That's a rotten thing in my business. That's a rotten thing. How can I handle that? God meant it. Now, that takes the heat off. What should I do? No, cut that stuff out. That I stuff out. Don't say, what should I do about that? You start that way because you're human. I'm always negative. I'm permanently negative to start with. I know how to turn the key in the lock now. You see, you start negative. Of course you do. I can't have that. But then, when you meant God, you meant it now. Now, I'm off battling it. I'm accepting it from God. Then I go a little higher and say, God, you've got a purpose in this. I'm going to say you've got a purpose. If it's guidance, I'm going to say it's guidance. If it's truth, I'm going to say it's truth. If it's salvation, I'm going to say it's salvation. I'm going to practice a positive faith in a negative situation. And I'm an on-top person. See, we reign as kings. You reign as king, we reign as on-top, we're on-top of everything. We're on-top of everything, unless we're fools enough not to be on-top. You see, when I begin to understand I'm a human in a human situation and the main part is in front of people. The main part, these things I go through that I may be able to share the love of Christ or some faith with other people. I don't have to do that for myself. You see, when I see this and I have it clear it's not I but He and then I have it clear the whole universe is He and that's whatever it looks like I have no shadow except my own unbelief. The only thing that marries me is you will live by your attitude, you transmit your attitude. If my attitude's negative, I transmit it. Oh, look at that, you're transmitting. Oh, look at that. If I say, yeah, I kind of don't like it then I'm not going to look at that. I'm going to start that way and not like it. I'm going to turn around and say, you meant it, God, now. I'm beginning to be positive, acceptance, faith in a rotten condition. And I'm transmitting something with God in the situation and putting some faith into it and light and love into it. I'm beginning to be transmitting God's faith and light and love into it. And this life is full of foolishness. You're the fool. That's all. And the only thing Jesus ever called his disciples he never called his disciples fools. He called them fools. Oh, fools of so hard to believe. Foolish, is it? Silly fool, I'm following my negative outlook because I'm positive. Change it. And see the negative as God saw it, see it. Which is, of course, perfect. When Jesus said, see the devil's character. He said, nothing in me. He had everything, I tore him to pieces. He had nothing. But it took something. He had to walk with them again. Was he a fool? Should he die? They all left him. He only had guidance. He had only, like we did, the guidance of faith to go by. And he said, I'm going to die on my testimony of God's love. I'm going to stand for God's love. I'm going to die. So you see, I mean, there's a death in it. There's a new life. So that's a new life. And it's a mixture of fun and seriousness. And the fun clouds up the seriousness. You want to go, Peter? I think you were going. I told him you were staying for a moment. Oh. Yes? Do you think when Christ was on the cross and said, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me, that at that point he had incinerated the ultimate illusion of Satan in the woman? No. Because he said, my God. He never left my God. He said, you appear to forsake me. He said he was forsaken because he was a sinner. Yes. But he appeared to be. And he was, and that says go to hell. But my God, my God, that says it. So if you feel forsaken, think in my God first. So, the pot, ultimately, to generalize about the pot, the pot's really neutral. Morally neutral. Oh, it's a stepping stone. You've moved back from the pot to be a very vigorous person. But you've got to learn the pot first. The pot helps you to see it's not you. It's just a means of seeing. A pot is not, a cup is not the coffee. What's that? My being, which is defined as a container, though. If I want to generalize on what it's significance is, it's neutral. It doesn't have a positive or a negative aspect to it. It's only what it contains. Oh, you're right there. I beg your pardon. Yes, you're controlled by a deity. Without knowing it, you're subconsciously controlled by the, of course, the new one now. Yes, that's true. Yes, that's right. The tendency is to give it the value of what it contains. But it doesn't take on the value of it. No, thank you. You put me right there. I didn't mean that. A pot doesn't change. The motivations of the deity. We don't recognize them most of the time. You just think it's yourself. But think you. And don't be afraid of cut contentation out. Dare to say I'm God. If I'm not, he better change me. Don't change yourself. If you don't like yourself, say sure, sure. For God's sake, make me not. You make me mine. Throw the heat on him. Put all the heat on God. He asked for it. It's his fault. He should have chosen it. It's freedom, isn't it? All the ones that seem to never get to life before they die, too, doesn't it? Death. A good step is thrown over. So much better. So die quickly. Don't make too much of death. Just this. Get rid of it. Because I'm so near it, I'm looking forward to it. We'll hang on for a bit. I don't care that way at all. It's just that sometimes I wonder why God has seen fit to give me such joy and understanding and not the person next to me, for instance, or somebody across the street. Oh, that's beautiful. You're there to talk later. And you do. And keep your faith. You're not what you were two years ago, dear. When I'm dying, you keep your cotton-picking hands off of me. I don't want to stay down here. I want to go. Don't bring me back. We say amen? No. Well, my dear, thank you so very much. Satan was in us when we were young, before we were saved. What's that? We contained Satan before we contained Jesus. That's very important. That's a missing note. Well, that's kind of something you don't want to believe, because you're young and you see little children. I tell you why it's important. That's the subtlety of it. Of course, Satan's simply Mr. Self-lover. He may know outer sins we know of. He may find you with those sins. You know that. If I never was independent, if I was always indwelling, it's easy to say, oh, I change indweller. If I've got the idea I was independent, why should I now suddenly be indwelled by Christ? I never was alone. I change indweller. It makes it much easier to move over in the proper direction. And then we would say, that's all. Pardon? In other words, the guy with the with the horse and the tail and the pitchfork. No, no. He likes it when you think back. Satan and a child are very different. Yes. I was Satan for a good many years. But nevertheless, what God does is good. Doesn't God protect them so well? Pardon? Doesn't God protect the children so well? Oh, yeah. That's an alt-external way. But a child is born in sin like everybody else. We know that. Any mother knows that. Is that what you mean? But there's not a little bit of God in the baby? Yes. There's a pacifist response in all of us. We didn't do what the devil did. Threw God out. We sin from soul, not from spirit. Spirit is you. You're out, I mean. Eve was tricked. Adam did what he always did, follow his wife. Which he's done ever since. He willfully followed his wife and Eve was tricked. That's why men are tougher than women. Pardon? Yes? Yes? Remember me? Yeah, I do. I had the opportunity to talk to you this afternoon. I have a question that I didn't ask you. How do I explain to my children that I'm not perfect? How do I explain to my children that I'm not all that I'm supposed to be? Because you explain it to them, you are perfect. But be that first. Be first what you explain. Don't explain. Well, don't I explain. If you don't, say I'm not that. Tell your children you aren't Christ yet. Yes. If you're not Christ, don't lie to them. If you haven't yet settled the matter, tell them I'm not. But you're sure caught, he'll get you. I know, but that's his show. I had an awful time trying to explain to children or young people that have never made mistakes like we do what sin is, you know, how you tell them, you're a sinner, you're Jesus. And I finally found out what the sin was. The sin is independence. And that was what was passed down to the whole human race. And boy, when I saw that, hallelujah, then I could tell them. I could tell that to anybody. Because that's the curse that was passed down to the world, the sin of independence. And that set me free, now I can tell anybody. Praise God. 1776? I say, did that go for 1776 when we cut ourselves off? Yes, I hope you've been regretting it ever since. What happens when a child dies You know, if it's born and it's indwelt by the spirit of error, when does the spirit of Christ take over the child? The whole world's redeemed as they know it. You make a sound of the world, I'm sure. I don't need to judge. They're too young to consciously pass All God does is perfect. That's all. As Billy Graham said in his question He says, what about God? He says, there'll be no one who'll go to hell who'll say, God, you weren't fair in sending me. That's the answer. If you go to hell, you'll say, God, you were fair in sending me, I deserved it. So no one's sitting in hell by mistake. It's actually harder to go to hell than to go to heaven. My husband, he has a big problem with a burning everlasting hell. He can't imagine if God is so loving, how can he send people to a burning everlasting hell? Do you agree with the concept in the Bible of that? He also has a bit of a gidding about believing that God is love. Think on that one. And where heaven is and where he is. If you want it, hell is where you take yourself. I don't think words can describe what it's like to be separated from Jesus. So I don't worry about it if I'm not going. I don't care. Where can I go to get away from you? If I go into heaven, you're there. If I go into hell, you're there. That's right. I'm made in hell now out there. And who knows how it gets out there. So there's no such thing as hell? Oh yes. Hell is separation from God then? You're a bad person to raise that here. Well you don't want to keep it if you want to go. Time's going. That's how I'm going to go. Yes? We receive in our bodies that recompense of that error which is meat. That's such a homosexual thing we can talk of anybody. You receive in your body that recompense of your error which is meat. If you're angry, you receive in your body the recompense of the anger. And the hell is in you. It's what you are when you're out of gear. That's the hell. Because they're all beef.
