Seven Reasons Why You Should Go - Part 2
George Verwer

George Verwer (1938 - 2023). American evangelist and founder of Operation Mobilisation (OM), born in Ramsey, New Jersey, to Dutch immigrant parents. At 14, Dorothea Clapp gave him a Gospel of John and prayed for his conversion, which occurred at 16 during a 1955 Billy Graham rally in New York. As student council president, he distributed 1,000 Gospels, leading 200 classmates to faith. In 1957, while at Maryville College, he and two friends sold possessions to fund a Mexico mission trip, distributing 20,000 Spanish tracts. At Moody Bible Institute, he met Drena Knecht, marrying her in 1960; they had three children. In 1961, after smuggling Bibles into the USSR and being deported, he founded OM in Spain, growing it to 6,100 workers across 110 nations by 2003, with ships like Logos distributing 70 million Scriptures. Verwer authored books like Out of the Comfort Zone, spoke globally, and pioneered short-term missions. He led OM until 2003, then focused on special projects in England. His world-map jacket and inflatable globe symbolized his passion for unreached peoples.

Number two, very few are going. Now I say few, it's a dangerous word, it's a relative word, because we know that God has raised up many witnesses and we thank Him for it, we praise Him for the greatest missionary thrust perhaps ever going on in history. Link that with what's going on through satellite. Billy Graham may launch a campaign in a couple of years in which simultaneously from London he will preach to 5,000 cities across the world, calling it the Billy Graham grand finale. After that I guess he's just going to bring a doorbell and go up to heaven. I don't know how men like that handle these things. But when we consider the population of 5 billion people, and population explosion, and the cities, the super cities, the mega cities, the beyond mega cities, and Atlanta is going to be one of them, then we know the laborers are few. If I were a wheeler dealer businessman, you know what I'd do right now? If I wanted to get God's work done in the devil's way or a carnal way, that's a better term, I'm going to fight you. What I'd do right now is stop the meeting and start hiring secretaries. That's my number one burden. I'm neurotic about the need for office staff because I've seen so much trouble, so much chaos, and so many recruits we miss, we miss, because our offices are not functioning properly. Now we can do something with amateurs, and we thank God for every amateur that falls out of the tree into the OM office. They'll not drive you around the bend, but we thank God for them. And may they continue to come. But it's a wonderful day when the Spirit of God brings in trained bookkeepers, trained accountants, trained secretaries, trained office workers. It's actually very hard to find them. It's the one area where there's almost no unemployment. In London, England right now there's tens of thousands of jobs for secretaries. Thousands and thousands of jobs. So, you know, if I wanted to do, in a sense, I had a load of money, I was doing things in a carnal way, I'd say, I'm signing up secretaries after the meeting, starting salary, 50,000 bucks a year, bonuses, pension, everything that works. Free wardrobe, Cadillac, cell phone, work. Just come and work in my office. Now some people actually operate that way, but that's not the way God has led us to work, and we don't have the money anyway. So, you know, if you come in for an interview as a secretary, we tell you about all the need and tell you about the offices and the opportunities, and then we tell you, now there's a little catch here, just a little catch. You've got to go find your own money. I tell you, it really surprises people sometimes when they discover that OM is not paying the salary. I'll never forget when we interviewed this ship captain. I mean, he was a real dude. This man was something else, and we interviewed him, he was so excited. He was going to be captain. Now these men usually make about 50,000. And after somewhere in the middle of the interview, the money matter came up. And our dear interviewer said, well, you see, Captain, this is a work, a work of faith. A work of what? A work of faith. What's that mean? Please talk to me in plain English. It means there's no salary. We want you to look to the Lord to supply your financial needs. I tell you, that old turkey blew out the door like somebody shot him with a laser beam. That was the end. I've never seen that man since. Well, we get some interesting situations in this faith movement in the day when people don't understand what faith is. Few are going when we consider the overall picture. And then thirdly, this is really crucial, few ever get this far. We have combed America to find you. We've taken hundreds and hundreds of meetings, radio interviews, television appearances. I appeared on the 700 Club. How many recruits do you think a nationwide appearance on the 700 Club will bring in? I haven't heard of any yet. Maybe there's one. Anybody here came as a result of seeing me on the 700 Club? Probably all the TVs blinked out at that moment. We have combed the nation looking for recruits. I will tell you, recruiting today is hand-picked fruit. Every one of you have battled through satanic opposition to get here. And you are very, very special and very unusual. And the truth and the challenge you have received this week is something that you will be held accountable for. To whom much is given, much is expected in return, the Word of God says. So I just ask this, if you don't go, if a good number of you who have gotten this far in vision, in training, in exposure, if you don't go, who will? Who will? Your little sister who is still spending most of her time sitting and watching Dallas? Your little brother who is a complete sports neurotic and doesn't even go to church anymore because he got to play baseball on Sunday? If you don't go, who have been exposed and who have been challenged and who have heard and received what you have, then if you don't, who will? Who will? You write me. I will tell you, you have a holy responsibility. God's providence is important in determining His will and the very fact that you even found out somehow about Operation Mobilization and somehow you've got through the applications and the screening and you're here and you're about to get in an airplane is no small thing. Number four, the fourth reason why I want you to consider going on a longer term basis. Because there are so many open doors. I wish I could give you my open door or open doors message. You know, Operation Mobilization may be not known in Atlanta very much and it may not have a lot of credibility yet. It does among a few. But that is not true in the countries we are working in. Do you know that most Christians in India, that huge nation, would know about Operation Mobilization? And a high percentage of them want our teams and they want to work with us. And even those that may be very different in theology, highly esteemed men like Ray Eicher, men like Alfie Franks, we have labored in India almost 25 years. We have given the word of God to a quarter of a billion souls in India alone. Thousands of Indians trained in OM are working with all different groups. And that's true in a number of other countries that I don't have time to mention. This credibility, these relationships, these ex-OMers, 40,000 of them around the world, plus many other factors, not only open doors for us, we can honestly say the doors are off the hinges.
