Timothy Tow

Timothy Tow Siang Hui (December 28, 1920–April 20, 2009) was a Singaporean preacher, pastor, and theologian, best known for founding the Bible-Presbyterian Church (BPC) in Singapore and serving as the founding principal of the Far Eastern Bible College (FEBC). Born in Swatow, China, to a Presbyterian family, he moved to Singapore as a child, where his father worked as a teacher. Raised in a Christian home, Tow experienced a profound conversion in 1935 at age 14 during a revival meeting led by John Sung at Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church, shaping his lifelong commitment to evangelical faith. Tow’s preaching career began after he studied at the Anglo-Chinese School and later Faith Theological Seminary in Wilmington, Delaware, earning a Bachelor of Theology in 1948 and a Master of Sacred Theology by 1950. Ordained in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1950 by the Philadelphia Presbytery of the Bible Presbyterian Church under Carl McIntire’s influence, he returned to Singapore to pastor the English Service at Life Church (Say Mia Tng) at 144 Prinsep Street, renaming it Singapore Life Church. In 1955, he led a secession from the Chinese Presbyterian Synod—due to its ecumenical ties with the World Council of Churches—forming the Bible-Presbyterian Church, with his congregation becoming Life Bible-Presbyterian Church (Life BPC). In 1962, he founded FEBC, training ministers in a strict fundamentalist tradition, emphasizing verbal plenary inspiration.

Sermon Summary
Timothy Tow preaches on how we can know there is a God by looking up at the heavens and observing the beauty and design of His creation, which declares His glory and power. The sun, moon, and stars all point to the existence of a Creator. By looking inward into our hearts, we find a yearning for God, as Augustine expressed, acknowledging that our souls are restless until they find rest in Him. We are created in the image of God with a God-consciousness that leads us to seek after Him as our loving Father through Jesus Christ.
How Do You Know There Is a God?
How do you know there is a God? By looking up and by looking in. Psalm 19:1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." When you look up the sky in the morning you see the beauty of the rising sun. When you look up at night you see the moon and the twinkling stars. These witness to you there is a God who created them. He has made this great, wide, beautiful, wonderful world. We see God's mighty power. Rom 1:20 says, "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead (Divinity); so that they are without excuse." To say there is no God after we have seen his wonderful creation is blind! By looking up into the heavens one should know there is God. "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years" (Gen 1:14). When we look up in the sky we realise that the sun is to give us the daytime and the moon the night time. The sun gives us light that we may study our lessons and go to work. But we need to rest after a hard day's study and work. This is made possible by the coming of night with its moonlight. Here we see the purpose of God's creation. This includes the regulation of time, in which we have 365 days as our planet goes round the sun. We see that the Creator is not only the Almighty God but the All-wise God. How we should bow down and worship Him. We learn two lessons about Him the Almighty and All-wise God by looking up. Now we will find Him by looking in! By looking into our own heart. In Ps 42:11 the song-writer says to himself, "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me?" The song-writer is feeling sad and disturbed in his heart. This is the same mood experienced by St. Augustine , a bishop and great Christian philosopher. Augustine said, "O Lord, you have created us for Yourself and our hearts are restless till they find rest in You." We are made in the image of God. We are born to feel after God. We have God-consciousness in us. When we wander far from God, like an orphan child without a father, then comes the yearning for the one who is our Father. Do you know God is our loving Father through Jesus Christ our Saviour? Thus the song-writer comes to answer for himself, "Hope thou in God." We must return to seek after Him. He will fulfil our deepest needs. And by looking in we will find Him. How do you know that there is a God? By looking up and seeing the world He has made, even with a wonderful design and power, and by looking into our soul, we should know there is a Living and True God who has made us for Himself. Learn this song: God is good to me, God is good to me He holds my hand, He makes me stand God is good to me.
