Willie Mullan

William “Willie” Mullan (1911 - 1980). Northern Irish Baptist evangelist and pastor born in Newtownards, County Down, the youngest of 17 children. Orphaned after his father’s death in the Battle of the Somme, he faced poverty, leaving home at 16 to live as a tramp, struggling with alcoholism and crime. Converted in 1937 after hearing Revelation 6:17 in a field, he transformed his life, sharing the gospel with fellow tramps. By 1940, he began preaching, becoming the Baptist Union’s evangelist and pastoring Great Victoria Street and Bloomfield Baptist churches in Belfast. In 1953, he joined Lurgan Baptist Church, leading a Tuesday Bible class averaging 750 attendees for 27 years, the largest in the UK. Mullan authored Tramp After God (1978), detailing his redemption, and preached globally in Canada, Syria, Greece, and the Faeroe Islands, with thousands converted. Married with no children mentioned, he recorded 1,500 sermons, preserved for posterity. His fiery, compassionate preaching influenced evangelicalism, though later controversies arose.

He also expresses anticipation for Jesus' second coming and the redemption of believers' bodies. The preacher prays for protection for the congregation and for those involved in security forces during the upcoming elections. The sermon then transitions to a discussion about the finished work of creation and the importance of being in Christ for salvation. The preacher emphasizes that anyone, regardless of race, social status, or religious background, can be saved by entering into a relationship with Christ.
Sermon Transcription
Where we were last Tuesday, we were at this evolution. And we were looking at evolution versus creation. And I said to the class last week, just in case there is a stranger here this evening, and we can't go into all the facts of last week, because we spent over an hour last week sort of getting this thing off the ground. But I said that evolutionists believe. This is what they believe. According to Sir Bernard Lovell, who is the director of the great laboratory at Jogrell Bank in England, some time ago he said, that millions of years ago, there was an explosion in the atmosphere. And out of that explosion was left a molecule, or a proto-spam, and from that tiny little living molecule evolved all the plants, and all the animals, and all the fishes, and all the humans, and this evolution is still going on. And that's what evolutionists believe, from that one single molecule of life came all life that we know and they know. Now as believers we don't believe that. This book states what we believe. Have a look at it again. It's Hebrews 11. Hebrews 11. The writer is Paul, and I could prove that quite easily. And this is what he is saying, Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, for by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand, that is we believers understand, that the walls were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. We are going to learn that God spake, and it was done, and I mean done. God spake and it was done, God commanded, the 33rd Psalm says, and it stood fast. And we believe that there was a whole creation, and what's more I'm going to force it this evening, it was a full aged creation. That's what we went into last week you know. We went into the rocks, we were looking at the rocks, the argument about fossils and rocks and trees. And sometimes the geologists, the professor of geology, at Queen's showed me a rock one day, and he assured me by all the means he has to prove its age, that it was millions of years old, and I said I accept that. He says it knocks your theory out altogether, it doesn't do anything of the kind. You see what we need to get the hold of is this, that when God made man, that's what we were at last week, let us make man. And this is what the book says, God created man, in his own image. Let's get the hold of it, he didn't create him a baby. Adam wasn't brought up on a bottle. And if I take the medical professor from Queen's down to Eden's garden and we're allowed to look through the hedge, and I say to him, see the man in the garden, he's a big man with a beard, broad back, you can see him, he's a real specimen, he's from the hand of God, the creator. I say what age is he? Now he knows a trick or two, because he's got a beard, because he's got build and broad. He says he's sixty, no he's not. You're off the mark, you know, your science is letting you down. He's only one second's age. Did you get that? Supposing I take the botanists down to their garden and I say, see the big oak tree in the corner, you know all these massive oaks, have a look at it. Now he knows. Now let's get it quite clear, you can read it, God planted trees in the garden. It isn't so strange, you know. He knows all about horticulture. Say what age is the big oak tree? He says it's a hundred years old. It's not, you know, just made. When I talk about God creating a full-aged world, you know now what I'm talking about, don't you? And if he made the man as old as he wanted, and made the trees as old, he can make the rocks as old. Age doesn't matter, you can't argue from that. God just made it like that. I said to a scientist once who was an evolutionist and a very nice gentleman too, I said, what do you think about the stars? Have you ever seen any stars evolving? Or has the stargazer seen any new stars evolving in any shape or form or way? And they haven't, you know. Just there as they've always been. I said, you know when the stars were made? He says, of course I do, on the fourth day. Because he said, I don't think the day was the day that you think about. You think it's 24 hours. And what length of the day do you think it was? Oh, he says, I think it was 20 million years. Because we proved last week when we were talking about the six days, we proved this couldn't possibly be true. If we give these seven days, six days of labour and the one day of rest, if we give them 20 million years each, then I said to a scientist once, and Adam was made on the sixth day, or part of the day, in the morning, afternoon or evening. And if it's 20 million years, then at dinner time if he was made, it's 10 million years to go to the end of the day. And there's another day to go after that, and that's 20 million and 10 and 30 million. And yet when it gives Adam's age, it gives his age as 900 and so many years. It's tripe they're talking, tripe, just plain tripe. It just doesn't work like that. And I said to this scientist, how many billion light years is the farthest, furthest star away from this earth? I'll tell you what they'll answer. The furthest star away from this planet of ours just now, it's one billion light years away. That's what they'll tell you. You ask them, read their books and it's there, it's all right. I wouldn't dare to quote anything that's wrong. And he said to me, it's one billion light years away, all right. So I made the stars on the fourth day. And you're talking about 20 million years and you're talking about the light years being a billion. They never got light for a long time after that, did they? Are you wakening up now? If the light years is one billion years away, 20 million years hardly counts. They didn't get light the next day, nor the next one, nor the next one. We're counting it out for them now. Yes, we are. I want to get you the hold of this thing. I'll tell you the greatest trait that's talked in this world just now, is evolution. That's what it is. It just won't work if you try it round and round in every shape and way and form. It just won't work. Now, we want to get on with the subject this evening, and I want we're done at number three on your notes, if you have them. And it's evolution versus our finished creation. I want you to watch this very, very carefully because here is the crux of the matter. Now, evolutionists believe, and this is the fundamental belief of the evolutionists' philosophy. This is the fundamental. Now, I wrote this down out of one of their books. This is the fundamental belief of their philosophy, that the origin, I'll read this so I won't make any mistakes, that the origin and development of all things, just you follow me, the origin and development of all things can be understood in basic natural laws and processes, which can be studied in operation right now. That's what they believe. They believe that the origin and development of all things can be understood in basic natural laws and processes, which can be studied in operation right now, because they believe that from this molecule all these laws and processes went into operation and are still in operation and are operating tonight and can be studied in operation right now. I shall tell you this, that that just cannot be so according to this book. Let's go back to Genesis. We're at Genesis chapter 2 tonight as we begin. Book of Genesis, and we're at chapter 2. You see, we've had a long, long chapter in chapter 1, and bit by bit as we went through these days, and they were 24-hour days, because they were bounded by the words the evening and the morning were the first day. And you can't bind periods like that, you know. Oh, I'm quite well aware that the word day is used for the day of salvation, and it goes on for thousands of years. I'm quite aware that the day of grace has run for a long time. And I'm quite aware that the day of his wrath, and we'll be right in the midst of the day of his wrath when we come to the great tribulation period. I know it's a long time. But you can't use the words evening and morning for these periods. And then each day here in Genesis 1, the evening and the morning were the first day, and of course if you take them at 20 million years apiece, then you're going to be upset when you begin to count Adam's age and remember he was made on the sixth day. Now all this wonderful detail is given to us in chapter 1, and then it's safe in chapter 2. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished. Oh, there's no process going on. Oh no, we're having to use the word finished. They say that this process is going on, that the origin and development of all things can be understood in basic natural laws and processes which can be studied in operation right now. And a way back there, this mighty work of creation is finished. That's what it says. Not going on. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. What's the next verse? And on the seventh day God ended. Let's get the word ended. What does it mean? Going on or ending? This is not a process that's going on. This is ending. This creation was ended. This is something that's ended. Let's go to Psalm 33 for a moment, will you see. Book of Psalms. And we're at Psalm 33. Let's take in a verse or two, just to save the time here. Verse 4. For the word of the Lord is right. It is always right and will be forever right. And all his works are done in truth. Verse 9. For he spake and it was done. Do you get the word? He commanded and it stood fast. And I don't think that you can take this fundamental philosophy and put it beside this word finished and ended and done and stood fast. All that was finished back there. You see, I think that there's a danger here of men who have this philosophy of stealing something. You know, this creatorial work, and we'll come to different parts of it in a moment, this creatorial work was finished. God spake. Yes, by the word of the Lord. The things which were seen, which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Actually, the great fact is that God took nothing and made everything just by a five word, and it was finished. Great creatorial work was finished. Now, it was a long time before God came to this earth to do another mighty work. You see, there is the work of incarnation. You know that the eternal son was in the bosom of the father. The Unitarians argue with me sometimes. Unitarian said to me, look, Jesus Christ began at Bethlehem. He was not before that. Oh, blathers. My dear friend, I just quoted one verse and he couldn't see it. I said, I'll tell you something. This book says, For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus, that though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor. This has got nothing to do with it. He says, what? It's got nothing to do with it. All right. You say he began at Bethlehem, and he was rich. Tell me when he was rich. Was he rich at Bethlehem? He was born in a stable, I can tell you. Was he rich in life? He was known as the carpenter's son. He was the stranger of Galilee. Was he rich in his ministry? When he was ministering, he had to turn round when he's going to illustrate. He says to the crowd, show me a penny. He hasn't got a penny. Was he rich in life? Was he rich in death? He died on the cross. He was buried in another man's grave. You just find him between Bethlehem and Calvary. When was he rich? Answer the question! Oh, my dear friends, you know, the pre-existence of the Lord Jesus is proved in this book. When he prays, he prays to the Father. He says, Father, give me the glory which I had with thee before the world was. When we call him the Lord of glory, we are not magnifying a wee fellow that was born at Bethlehem. Now, let's get the hold of this. But there came a time when the eternal Son, who was in the bosom of the Father, who was worshipped by myriads of millions of angels, when the fullness of the time was come, he stepped out of heaven into the Virgin's womb. Don't ask me too much about it. I don't understand properly the wonderful things that went on in the Virgin's womb. But I know that in the Virgin's womb he took upon himself the form of a slave. I know that he was God the Son. And I know that he didn't cease to be what he always was. But I know he became what he never had been before. He is now God manifest in flesh. That is incarnation. That was another mighty work that God did. I shall tell you this. There is another mighty work that God has done. I want to tell you this. Look at 2 Corinthians 3, chapter 5. Now this is what I think we are in danger of missing at times. 2 Corinthians, chapter 5. Just reading verse 17. Therefore, he is just arguing from all he has said in the chapter, and I don't want to take the whole chapter. Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. In the margin of some of your Bibles it will say this. He is a new creation. Yes, they are nodding all over the place. That's a new creation. Oh, that's a very wonderful thing, you know. I want you to get the hold of this. You know, there are little phrases here you should look at. If any man, you see the whole world of mankind, do you? Black and white and red and yellow and learned and illiterate and kings and paupers and high and low and rich and poor and Protestant and Catholic and Jew and Arab. It doesn't make a matter who you are. If any man! It goes for any one of us. If any man. Oh, let's get this bit. If any man be in Christ. If he comes to this place in life where he steps by faith into Christ the way that Noah stepped into the ark. You know that Christ used the illustration, I am the door, by me if any man enter in he shall be saved. You can see the any man, can't you? You know, there's a sameness about it. Be in Christ, there's a blessedness about it. He is a new creature, a new creation. There's a positiveness about it. That's the work that God's doing. I think you can see that God finished the creatorial work. I think you can see the mighty work that God did not only at creation but in incarnation. I think you can see the mighty work that God does in regeneration. Because that makes you a new creation. And I'll tell you it's not finished yet. Because when by his grace I shall look on his face that will be glory for me. That's the finish of the article. I'm not a finished article yet, you know. But one day I shall be like him. That's glorification. Oh, I don't think that the evolutionists can stand with this nonsense against the word finished. It's not going on at all. That creation was finished but we'll get down to it a little bit finer than that just in a moment. Have a look at this next bit. Evolution versus fixed kinds. You know I said to a scientist I was given lectures in Edinburgh and there were one or two of these gentlemen there mind you they believe they're saved and I believe they're saved but they've got this notion. And I said to one of these scientists who's a very dogmatic evolutionist I said, is this really true? That all kinds, mark the word kinds all kinds of plants let's take the plants, you must know some of them I don't care what you take, you can take wallflower you can take roses, you can take any other plant you like all kinds of plants. I said to him, is this really true? That all kinds of plants and all kinds of fish and you know how many different kinds and all kinds of animals then you can take lion and leopard and elephant and so on whatever you like and all kinds of humans now let me try to get the hold of this all kinds of plants and fishes and animals and humans have they all just one ancestor back there? Is that what you're teaching? That's what you're teaching They have just one ancestor They all come from the one molecule, is that it? OK, OK We'll find out just now I shall tell you, you're going to find it's nonsense Let's go to 1 Corinthians chapter 15 1 Corinthians chapter 15 One or two things to establish here and you'll have to be patient with me 1 Corinthians 15 verse 12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead I'll say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead because there are people who say there is no resurrection The Sadducees didn't believe in a resurrection That's why John Bunyan in Pilgrim's Progress said that his sins have gone into a Sadducean grave They would never be resurrected again, no more forever Clever old Bunyan Yes, I want you to get this Verse 13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead then is Christ not risen? And if Christ be not risen then is our preaching vain and your faith is also vain If Christ is still in a grave somewhere on the hills of Jerusalem then I think we should close the meeting And I don't know who you would vote for tomorrow after that We lose that, we've lost everything, haven't we? Yea, and we have found false witnesses of God because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ whom he raised not up if so be that the dead rise not For if the dead rise not then is Christ not raised? He's gone back over the argument again Good old preacher And if Christ be not raised your faith is vain ye are yet in your sins And when the Russellites maintain that Christ was not raised bodily from the grave they're telling you, you're still in your sins And we listen to this claptrap, don't we? And I'll tell you what some of you need to know This book says, shun profane and vain babbling You don't go to dabble in this You shun it like the plague That's what the book says anyway Whether you will obey or not, I don't know You don't listen to that They're just saying you're still in your sins Now I want you to get this Verse 17 If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain ye are yet in your sins Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished Your mother, if she's dead, she's perished You don't like people to say that That's what they say at your door sometimes No wonder I threw them out I shall not let people come round the door I shall not let people say my mother is perished Not a bit of me I know my good all more than heaven If in this life only we have hope in Christ we are of all men most miserable But now is Christ risen from the dead And become the first fruits of them that slept Now we're going over the chapter a bit to verse 35 But some man will say, how are the dead raised up? Of course they'll shift the ground of their argument And with what body do they come? Thou fool, that which thou sourced is not quickened except it die And that which thou sourced, thou sourced not that body that shall be but bare grain It may chance of wheat or of some other grain But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him You would know the difference in the grains, wouldn't you? Oh, I don't think you're so far away If I gave you a handful of barley I have a feeling that the most of you would know what barley was like And if I gave you wheat on the other hand I think you would know what wheat is like And I'm positively sure you know what corn is like I don't need to go into lentils and all the other things And there's a man in the meeting who owns a bird shop up the street And he's got old bags of seeds all around And I go in and plunder food and the birds don't mind me handling the food at all And I don't know all the seeds that's in there They're all different Now I'll tell you this You can sow them in whatever country you like But they'll just produce the same kind Not a different kind I want you to get this This is a fixed thing you see These kinds are fixed Now watch this because this is most important See these grains of wheat or of some other grain Verse 38 says But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him And to every seed his own body All flesh is not the same flesh That's just where we're going to have a bit of an argument with the evolutionists aren't we? Because they say it's all the same It's all coming from the same one spot isn't it? The same ancestor Common ancestor For plants, for fish, for birds Eh? For animals Eh? For humans All flesh is not the same flesh I would think you would know that You see there is one kind of flesh of men Not a kind of flesh of beasts Not all fishes and not all birds I'm sure you know that You know the story of the farmer's boy who worked at the farm And you know the old cow died And the old farmer shed its blood and all ripped off its hide And they were eating the cow for weeks And then you see after that was gone the donkey died And well he ripped off the hide and they were eating the donkey for weeks too And then after that the grandmother died And the young fellow took his cards and left He thought he knew the difference in flesh Yeah Ah there's a difference And the surgeons know the difference now You see you cannot transplant anything you like into anyone you like either Because there's something in there that rejects it sometimes Even though it came from a human And that's going into little intricacies now We were not doing that I want you to go back to Genesis Let's go back to you see We're at Genesis chapter 1 Now you'll find this again and again and again And I mustn't take too much time with it Verse 11 And God said Let the earth bring forth grass The herb yielding seed And the fruit tree yielding fruit Watch it After his kind Whose seed is in itself Upon the earth and it was so Look down at verse 21 See 21 And God created great whales And every living creature that moveth Which the waters brought forth abundantly After their kind Mark that bit And every winged fowl After his kind See verse 24 And God said Let the earth bring forth the living creature After his kind Cattle creeping things The beast of the earth After his kind Never after a different kind There is no evolving I tell you you can work With an apple tree In whatever way you like to work I've seen the best horticulturists in the country Trying to graft Trying to graft I was there when it was done Trying to graft plums Onto apples It won't work I tell you It's a different sap altogether It won't even grow Won't take on Oh no You can't make an apple tree bear plums You can't make a donkey bring forth piglets Won't work No I know that human beings produce things That's very wonderful at times Never mind I'll tell you it's a fixed kind Fixed Oh no it's not a common ancestor at all I'll tell you this is all fixed You see how can evolution verse fixed kinds You just can't do it Let's go on to the next one till you see See what it says Evolution versus the wisdom of God I was reading just this very day It's one of Darwin's books Mind you he worked hard And he went up alleys And he worked for years in those alleys Always to come to a sort of cul-de-sac And there were so many errors And so many misfits So many evolutionary blind alleys It just didn't work Now let's think about this This is what one of the evolutionists said He said that when this evolution got underway And we came into animals In the prehistoric world These dinosaurs They came along And of course there has been fossils found of these And there's no problem about this at all We went into this last week where Satan wanted to take over And God turned the world upside down You know some of the believers won't accept this gap theory Because they say it was done by the flood That the rocks were turned upside down by the flood And therefore there are fossils found in the rocks Because of the mighty flood Now there have never been a human fossil found Not one And if this came by the flood I would think we would find thousands of them Oh there were humans here when the flood came Now this was before humans Now this is what I penned out of this book This gentleman said That the dinosaurs were here For one hundred million years Before there was another movement In this evolution process Hundred million years I want you to get that If God was moving towards making man And the dinosaurs are here And this is just one little department we're taking For one hundred million years That's quite a long time isn't it? Is that like the wisdom of God? If God is moving towards making man What's all this time loss about? That's not like God at all That's like confusion And this book says that God is not the author of confusion I think they're wrong in their dates The same as the rocks and the trees and everything else I don't believe that this would work at all When God says Let all things be done decently and in order When it says in this book that the king's business requires haste What's the hundred million years of the hold up for? I don't accept that at all I don't think that would work I don't think that works beside the wisdom of God at all Look let's come down to this last one on the page this evening And it's evolution versus death and decay You see the talk from this evolution philosophy Is that things are getting better and bigger And all the rest of it is growing and all the rest I can tell you friend That old Henry Light was right You know the old minister Church of Ireland minister Dying of TB In days long ago when there was no hope for him And in his last hours he scribbled on a piece of paper This immortal hymn Sing it at football matches now even Abide with me Fast falls the even time The darkness deepens Lord with me abide When other helpers fail And comforts flee Help of the helpless Bind with me In one of the verses he penned this Death and decay In all around I see I can tell you that this book says That the grass withereth That the flower fadeth That the earth shall rexhold That it shall fold up like a garment How can you bring death and decay To be on the same terms as evolution I can tell you in the very third chapter In the very second chapter That God cursed the earth The earth was cursed It's the third chapter of Genesis Have a look at it Genesis 3 Genesis 3 and 17 And unto Adam he said God said Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife And hast eaten of the tree Of which I commanded thee saying Thou shalt not eat of it Cursed is the ground For thy sake I can tell you there is a curse upon Let's go over to Romans chapter 8 I think you must see this before we close the meeting Romans chapter 8 Here is a bit of real preaching for you Romans 8 And I think everybody knows 28 But I think you ought to know 18 before 28 Romans 8 and 18 Paul writing said For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time Are not worthy to be compared with the glory Which shall be revealed in us For the earnest expectation of the creature And the word there is the same word as we had in 2nd Corinthians The earnest expectation of the creation Waiteth, the whole creation is waiting For the manifestation of the sons of God For the creation was made subject to vanity Not willingly But by reason of him who has subjected the same in hope Because the creation itself Also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption That is not evolution That is the bondage of corruption That is death and decay I don't think you can stand beside it even I don't think that evolution has a foot to stand on Beside death and decay And it's all around us And every one of us knows something about it I want you to get the hold of this He goes further than that He says verse 22 For we know that the whole creation There is your word They put it right that time The whole creation groaneth And travaileth in pain Together until now Why we've come down the years suffering And death and decay has been with us all the way And not only they, not only the whole creation But ourselves also The believers Which are the first fruits of the spirit Even we who are indwelt by the Holy Ghost We ourselves groan within ourselves My this whole body is going down Last week I worked all week at a message And God filled and filled my heart And then Sunday morning came And I was hardly able to stand here And I had to call on Jeffrey Who's sitting there early in the morning And he came along and preached better than I'll ever do I mean that son Yes Because I'm done Really done I don't think you believe that But if you felt what I feel sometimes you would Well there's no evolution about me I'm dying Yes So are you two Some of us more dead than the rest of course Take it carefully now You see what I see in this whole argument Bless my friends who argue with me They're all so kind to me So kind at Queen's too Once say this I can see the devil coming in through a thing like this And he wants to take the glory of the creator away Oh I'm not allowing you to do that All things were made by him Our Lord Jesus And without him was not anything made that was made And you're not allowed to take away the glory of the creator But I see them not only taking away the glory of the creator I see them taking away the glory of the saviour Oh yes he came to save Through the blessed Virgin Mary he came to save What a wonderful saviour he is I want you to get this bit I see them taking away the glory of the creator And the glory of the saviour I see them taking away the glory of the redeemer Ah there's a redemption that's coming It'll be the redemption of this body And it'll be the redemption of this whole groaning creation Just have a look at him tonight Thank God he's the creator Thank God he's the saviour Thank God he's the redeemer Don't let anybody steal his glory I hope you've got something out of this May God bless you Let's bow together We'll not sing anymore We'll just have a word of prayer Lord we bow at thy feet We thank thee for this book We thank thee for the wonderful words that thou hast placed in this book For the truth that's here Lord we thank thee for thyself We thank thee that this book declares that thou art a faithful creator And with a fire word you brought this whole thing to be We bless thee Lord that thou didst lay the foundation of the earth And the heavens are the works of thy hands And there was a moment when you finished it and it was ended That great creatorial work Lord we thank thee for the time when you came to earth And took upon thee the form of a servant And was found in fashion as a man to go to Calvary to die for us What a saviour Thank thee that you'll come again We're waiting for the adoption to wit The redemption of this body When the bondage of corruption That's upon this whole creation just now because of sin When death and decay will go forever And there'll be a new heavens and a new earth Lord Jesus we thank you for yourself Take us into the depths of the truth that thou hast for us My Lord part us in thy fear Take us home in safety Remember us through this night Remember our policemen and all our security forces And all who stand between us and the wicked foe And on the day of these elections When maybe murderers would be abroad Lord remember the men of this assembly Who are in between us and the enemy Preserve their going out and their coming in Part us in thy fear With thy blessing for thy name's sake Amen Nine four nine When all my labours and trials are over And I am safe on that beautiful shore Just to be near the dear Lord I adore Will through the ages be glory for me 949 please When all my labours and trials are over And I am safe on that beautiful shore Just to be near the dear Lord I adore Will through the ages be glory for me All that will be glory for me Glory for me Glory for me By thy kingdom come
