George Verwer

George Verwer (1938 - 2023). American evangelist and founder of Operation Mobilisation (OM), born in Ramsey, New Jersey, to Dutch immigrant parents. At 14, Dorothea Clapp gave him a Gospel of John and prayed for his conversion, which occurred at 16 during a 1955 Billy Graham rally in New York. As student council president, he distributed 1,000 Gospels, leading 200 classmates to faith. In 1957, while at Maryville College, he and two friends sold possessions to fund a Mexico mission trip, distributing 20,000 Spanish tracts. At Moody Bible Institute, he met Drena Knecht, marrying her in 1960; they had three children. In 1961, after smuggling Bibles into the USSR and being deported, he founded OM in Spain, growing it to 6,100 workers across 110 nations by 2003, with ships like Logos distributing 70 million Scriptures. Verwer authored books like Out of the Comfort Zone, spoke globally, and pioneered short-term missions. He led OM until 2003, then focused on special projects in England. His world-map jacket and inflatable globe symbolized his passion for unreached peoples.

Sermon Summary
In this sermon, the preacher shares a story about a man who was jogging and suddenly found himself being chased by a tiger. The man tries to evade the tiger by running from side to side, but the tiger continues to pursue him. Eventually, the man turns to face the tiger and says, "Have faith in God." The preacher then relates this story to the biblical account of the Israelites facing seemingly impossible obstacles in the Promised Land. Only two men had the faith to believe that God would give them victory, while the rest doubted. The preacher emphasizes the importance of having faith, the power of prayer, and obedience to God's word in fulfilling God's plan for our lives and for the world.

I really believe that God wants me to speak to you in a very special way today, because I believe it's important we understand one thing, that I can talk all day about miracles and about what God is doing in Russia. But it's important that we understand how to put this into practice. And I want to share something with you today, of how God can do this here in your life. We need to know the practice. We know how to do it in Jesus' name. I was speaking in a big Pentecost conference in England this week. And just before I began to speak, there was another speaker, and he was telling an interesting story. And I want to share this with you. The story's about a believer, and he was out jogging. And this was not in Germany or in England. And he was just going along, just like people do, just going along. And then behind him he could hear a noise. And he could hear the snuffles, snuffle behind him. And as he was going along, he was conscious of this, this something behind him. And he turned around to look. And there was this big tiger, not such a little tigger, but a big tiger. And as this man is going along and jogging, this tiger is behind him. And the man knows there's a tiger there. And the tiger knows his lunch is in front. And as the man is jogging, he begins to go from one side to the other. And the tiger is keeping just behind him. His jaws are drooling, you know. And the tiger is thinking, five minutes and it's my lunch. And the man is trying to run faster and faster. And he picks his feet up and puts them down faster and faster. And the tiger just keeps behind him. Three minutes. And the tiger thinks, I'll have my lunch. And then suddenly this man comes out of the woods and into a big open clearing. So he begins to run faster. And suddenly in front of him there's a big cliff, a big precipice. There's absolutely nowhere to go. Only this precipice. But in the ground on the edge of the precipice, there's an iron stake and a rope hanging down. And so he gets the rope and he begins to shing down the rope. And he came to the end of the rope. And it's still 200 meters above the ground. And on the ground there are these sharp rocks like teeth, jagged teeth up against the ground. And he looks up and he can see that tiger. And the tiger is still hungry and waiting for his lunch. And he's looking down at this man and he's drooling down and it's falling on the man's forehead. And then the man looks up and he sees a narrow little cleft in the rock just three or four meters above his head. And suddenly out of that hole in the rock there comes a big rat as long as he's on. You know, a big ugly rat. And he can, the rat can smell the salt on the rope. And rats love salt. And he goes to the rope and he begins to gnaw at the rope. And he's cutting part way through this rope. And the man is looking down at those jagged rocks beneath. And he looks up and at the tiger at the top. And the rat eating into the rope. Then he looks to the other side. And he saw the biggest strawberry you've ever seen growing. The strawberry. And he picks the strawberry. And he begins to eat it. Now it's the most wonderful strawberry he's ever had. And it's beginning to drip down onto his clothes. All the juice is running down his cheeks. It's the most wonderful strawberry. And this preacher said, don't look at the tiger. Don't look at the rocks. He just said, have faith in God. No, no, no, no, that's not the end. So he finished preaching, he got down from the platform. This is just four days ago. And I was listening. And everybody said, what happened to the man? Oh, he's got to have faith in God. So everybody shouts out, what happened to the man? And the preacher couldn't give an answer. Then I had to get up and preach. And the Holy Spirit is saying to me, don't leave that man on that rope. You've got to do something. And the Holy Spirit gave me the answer. You see, the Holy Spirit showed me that when that man began to eat that strawberry, he began to realize the power of God. And the power of the Holy Spirit began to come into him. This was Pentecost. This is the Holy Ghost. And the power of God came on that man. And in the power of the Spirit, he took that strawberry. He began to climb up that rope. He came to the rats. He put the strawberry in the mouths of the rats. And you know that rats hate strawberries. And he ran back into his hole. And then the man began to climb back up that rope in the power of the Spirit. And he came to the tiger at the top. And the power of the Holy Spirit was so strong, he climbed over, he got hold of that tiger. He tied the tiger's tail around his back legs. He took his front legs and he forced them into the tiger's mouth. And he got the victory over the power of the devil. And you know that's the power of God in us today. God is not going to let us go on the rocks. God is going to deliver us. And we have got to come in the power of the Spirit. With an authority and a power over every devil. Over every evil spirit. This is what Jesus said. This is spiritual warfare. Not running away from the devil. Not winning the victory over the devil in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. And it's time that the Church of God began to move in the power of His Spirit. And we begin to challenge the devil. We've got to reduce the devil. We've got to take authority over the power of every evil spirit. We've got victory in Jesus' name. Amen. Hallelujah. Praise God. Now I want to share the Word of God with you this morning. And I want to give you three ways, three directions, so that we can go out of this conference in order to fulfill everything that God has given us. I believe that there are three spiritual things in our lives. That are the secret of fulfilling God's plan. Not only the plan of God for our individual lives, but the plan of God for the nations. The plan of God for these last days. I'll give you the three things, so that you hear nothing else. I want you to know what these three things are. The first thing is that we need the power of a real Holy Ghost faith. We need to know and understand the new power in prayer. And I believe that we need to have an obedience to the Word of God. That one of the hardest things for us to understand and receive in our experience is the lesson of obedience to God. The first thing is faith. Oh, thank God for faith. If there's one thing I've asked God for, it is the gift of faith. And when I talk to my staff in Eurovision about the work that we're doing, I've always said that I want to live right on the edge. I want to push every frontier forward, every barrier forward. Not to live by our strengths and what we have, but to live by the power of God, by faith in Him. You know, in the Old Testament, we get a wonderful lesson. Because when the children of Israel left Egypt to go to the Promised Land, I could ask you, how long did it take them for the journey? Most of you would say, well, forty years. But it actually took them only forty days. And at the end of forty days, they stood right on the edge of the Promised Land. They could see the Promised Land. And so they sent twelve spies. Now, these twelve spies went out and they traveled all over this Promised Land. And they all saw the same thing. There was no difference. They all saw the same thing. They saw that it was a land flowing with milk and with honey. They saw the wonderful rivers. Snow-covered mountains. And that's true. They saw how good the land was. And they were excited. They saw it was everything that God had promised. And that's just like the church. Just like us today. We read the words. We listen to the preachers. We become so excited by what God is telling us. We understand that miracles can happen. We hear that we can preach the gospel all over the world. But there was one problem with these twelve spies. Because not only did they see the promise. Not only did they see the beauty of the land. But they also saw the big cities. They saw the military. The Panzer. They saw the rockets. They saw all the armies. They saw all the problems. They saw the giants. But they all saw the same thing. But when they came back. Ten of them said, oh, it's a wonderful land. It's everything that God has promised. But they said, we can't go in. They said, it's impossible. How can we fight these armies? How can we fight against the giants? Their advice was, oh, it's everything that God said. But it's impossible. We can't do it. We don't have the strength. We don't have the military strength to do it. Their advice was, oh, it's everything that God said. But we can't go in. We don't have the strength. We don't have the military strength. They said, we don't have the finance. We don't have all the equipment that we need. It's impossible. Only two of those men had the faith to believe God. And they said, we see the same problems. We see that this is the land that God has promised. But we believe God. Our God has got power. If God tells us to go. Then we're going to go. God will not fail us. God will give us the power. God will give us the victory. And they turned to the whole nation. And they said, let's go by faith in the power of God. Let's believe God. Nothing is impossible. And today, the church could evangelize the world. We've heard Brother George talking about the possibility. That if all the believers got together, there's enough believers in the world today to win the whole world for Christ. If all the believers got together, there's enough believers in the world today to win the whole world for Christ. We all know what God has said. We know Jesus said, go into all the world and preach the gospel. But we can give every reason why we don't go. We're not good enough spiritually. We don't have the finance. We don't have the power to do it. But that's where we've got to learn to go by faith in God's power. With God, nothing is impossible. I believe the greatness of God. I believe in a God of signs, a God of wonders, a God of miracles. But not just a God who works miracles of healing. Not just a God who works miracles by providing airplanes. But your God, my God, the God of the Bible, the God who says, go. The God who says, preach the gospel. And if we had real faith in God, if we really believed the God of the Bible, nothing would be impossible. Oh, hallelujah. Hallelujah. You see, this is the testing of our faith. This is the challenge that's in front of us today. Oh, I could tell you about a lot of miracles. I can tell you, one of the hardest problems in Russia is to convince people to believe. I was in one big evangelization in a football stadium. And when I preached the gospel, almost every unbeliever will come forward. They're hungry, they want to find God. They want to see the power of God. But they don't understand who this God is. I'm trying to tell them He's the God of the Bible. I'm trying to tell them that He loved them and He sent His Son, Jesus. But they don't understand. And I remember then I began to minister to the sick. And I knew that there was not any real faith amongst these people that they would be healed. So I turned to one woman who wanted healing. And I just said to her, do you believe? Now, there's one thing about Russia. There is a lot of religion in Russia. I think there's more religion in Russia than there is in Germany. They don't know God. But they have a lot of religion. And I said to this woman, do you believe? Oh, she said, I believe, I believe. She began to cross herself. She began to bow. She began to make all the religious signs. And I said, do you believe? Of course I believe. And then I looked at her and I said, well, what do you believe? She looked up at me. She said, young man. That was a miracle. She said, I've said I believe. Don't you understand? Of course I believe. I said, what do you believe? She was shocked. She said, I believe everything. So it meant she believed in flying saucers. She believed in the devil. She believed in every kind of witchcraft. But she didn't know God. And that is the problem. The challenge today is to the reality of our faith. We mustn't have faith in preachers. Our faith is in God. Not in man. But it's God. We've got to take our eyes off the preachers. We've got to take our eyes off the other believers. Stop measuring your faith by what your neighbor does. Begin to measure your faith by what God's faith is. So what did I do with that woman? Well, what I decided was these people needed to know what faith was. So I turned to all the people. And there were thousands of people in that stadium. I said, I can prove that the Jesus of the Bible is alive. I said, look, I'm not a doctor. I've no medicine. I can't work miracles. But God can. Now if God is alive, as he loves you, then you're going to see miracles happen in the stadium. If God is dead, then there will be no miracles. If the Bible is not true, there will be no miracles. But if miracles happen, it's because God is alive. Then I turned to the people. I said, I'm going to lay hands on some of you. But I said, I only want the people who've got broken bones. Broken legs. Broken arms. I said, no arthritis, no headaches, no toothache. Only broken bones. They brought me 11 people. Every one of them had a broken leg or a broken arm. And most of them, the doctors could not heal them. Some of them, they'd been in pain for many years. Now I believe that God is a God of miracles. And I had those 11 people on the platform. And I reached out my hands. And I called upon God. I said, oh God, show your power. You are the God of the Bible. You are alive today. You work the miracles. In the name of Jesus. And I put my hands on those 11 people in the name of Jesus. And the power of God came. Every one of them was healed. Broken legs. They were jumping on and off the platform higher than this. Men with broken legs jumping to one and a half meters. People with broken arms taking off the plaster, the sling, and holding their arms up. Hallelujah. You see, that's the power of God. There is nothing impossible with God. But we've got to learn how to put our faith into the practical test. That's what God wants us to begin to do today. Today is Pentecost. Oh, hallelujah. I thank God for the Holy Spirit. I thank God because I have been filled with the Holy Ghost. I began preaching when I was 13 years old. Because I was so impatient to tell people about Jesus. And I went to the pastor of my church. I said, I want to preach in the church. He says, you're too young, you're only 13. I said, I want the church. He said, you can't have it. I'd already been preaching in the street. I said, how many days do you use the church? He said, every day except Friday. I said, I'll have it Friday. I got the praise and worship group together. We called the people off the street. And I began to preach the gospel. Oh, hallelujah. But nobody got saved. Nobody got saved. So I went home, I said to my father, I said, what's the problem? He said, you haven't received the Holy Spirit yet. I said, oh, I want to receive the power and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. And I began to seek God. Oh, I cannot tell you how desperate I was to receive the power of God. But I tell you, as a young man of 13 years, the power of God came upon me. I was filled with the Holy Ghost. I began to speak with tongues. God began a ministry in my life. God changed my life. But I learned the biggest lesson that I've never forgotten. Two lessons. One is, I received the Holy Ghost when I was 13. But I need the Holy Ghost every day. I need a fresh baptism of the Spirit every day. I don't need to be baptizing water every day. But I need to be filled with the Spirit of God afresh every day. And I tell you, the power and the fire get stronger every day that I live. You've not only got to be filled with the Spirit, but you've got to walk in the Spirit. You've got to walk in the anointing, walk in the power. And the second thing I learned, I remember the words of Jesus. Luke's Gospel, chapter 4 and verse 18. You don't need to read it. Chapter 4, verse 18. I know these words. Jesus said, when he received the Holy Spirit, he said, the Spirit of God is upon me because because he's anointed me to preach the Gospel. Amen. And I want to challenge you that God gives you the gift of the Holy Spirit for a reason. Not just to sit in your church. Not just to speak in tongues. But I believe God has given us today within the church a new power through the Holy Spirit that we can preach the Gospel. That we can go not in our own strength, but in the power and the anointing of the living God. And there's one thing I'm praying for you. That the power of God will come upon you. Again and again and again. But while you're here, you will get such a hunger and a thirsting after God that you will cry out to him for more and more and more of the Spirit of God. I'll tell you one reason why I was so excited to come into this conference. Not just because I get a chance to minister to you, but because I'm on my way to the Ukraine. And on Wednesday of this week, I will begin to evangelize in a stadium in the Ukraine. And I want to go in the power of the Holy Spirit. I want to go with the anointing of God. But I want something more than anointing. I want the authority of God. And that authority is here in the Word. And I want to go by faith. And by faith, I'm going to take all the power that God has promised. I want to live in every promise of God's Word. And by faith, we will take the land. God will give us Russia. God will give us the Ukraine. There are no demons in hell that we cannot fight and overcome. If the whole of hell comes against us, Jesus said, if all the powers of hell come against the church, they cannot prevail. Hallelujah! We have that victory. In Jesus' name. We've got that victory. It's ours now. We're going to live in the victory. We're not defeated. The church is not defeated. The world thinks we're defeated. But we think we're in victory. We've got to demonstrate that victory. We've got to demonstrate it. In Jesus' name. Amen. We've got to learn what faith is. I want you to ask God for the gift of faith. Not only ask God for the gift, but put it into practice. Do it. Amen. But you know, the second thing we need is the power of prayer. And if I read to you from James, the epistle of James, and in chapter 5, verse 16, it says, confess your false one to another and pray one for another that you may be healed. Just like this, yeah? Now, this is where it's talking to the church about healing. But that's not to the evangelist. But then it says this. It says, the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails. Now, in the original, in the original Greek, where it's translated in English as effectual fervent prayer, in the Greek, it's only one word. And the word is dunamos. And from this word, we have two words in English and in German. The word dynamo and the word dynamite. Now, dynamo is a source of energy. Dynamite is an explosive. And I understand that as an explosive, dynamite is unusual. Because I understand that if you put this explosive against the wall, or if you were to put it against one of these pillars holding up the tent, don't do it. Because where is the normal explosive, the power comes out into the space. With dynamite, the force is not wasted on the open air, but it pushes against the obstacle. And will knock down the wall. Knock down the pillar. Now, that's exactly what prayer is. Prayer is not the voice which is lost in the air in the church. According to the word of God. Prayer is the dynamite that moves every mountain. Prayer is the dynamite that will move every obstacle, every barrier to the will of God. Now, if you want to see miracles, if you want to see healings, if you want to see the power of God in your life, if you want to learn the power of God in your life, then you have to get to know this power of God. No one here can have power with man until you have power with God.
