Hebron Silver Jubilee - Part 3
Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

The message delivered by the Lord's Servant, Brother Bhaktsingh, during the Hebrew and Silver Jubilee thanksgiving meetings held from 12th November 1975 to 14th November 1975. The message translated into Telugu language by the Lord's Servant, Brother K.N.Augustine, and in Hindi language by the Lord's Servant, Brother Champak Lal Bhatta of Bombay. Loving Heavenly Father, God of Grace, Mercy and Peace, Our Faithful and Wonder-Working God, Father of all Mercies, The Giver of all Good Gifts, The Covenant-Keeping God, The Prayer of Sri God, The Wonder-Working God, God of Glory, In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Our Highly Regarded Saviour, With the heart full of worship and praise come at Thy Feet. We thank Thee for Thy Abundant Grace and Thy Unchanging Love, which we have experienced in abundance in the past forty-five years. And magnify Thee for our oneness and union with the Lord Jesus Christ in the death, burial and resurrection which has enabled us to take our share in Thy Fulfillment. And magnify Thee for all the favours we have enjoyed in all the past years in serving Thee and obeying Thee, and thinking Thy words from place to place. Now we testify together Thou has done all things well. Thou has exceeded all our expectations, asks and thinking. So we magnify Thee for every promise fulfilled and every token of love received in the days. And only for the work of grace, salvation, dividends and revelations brought of Thee in many hearts, many lives, Thy word will yield the much of limitation. And magnify Thee for leading us, Mother Marty, in loving, stupid hands, as we go out together for Gospel campaigns in many parts of the country. And we adore Thee for bringing Thy saints together under the heads of the dear song in a number of places to worship Thee in spirit and truth. We magnify Thee, Loving Father, for all we have taken in this year in our ministry and service. So calling upon Thee, we worship Thee. And glorify Thy holy name, proud Thy faithfulness, Thee have proven on these days that Thou art the Lord of all. We worship Thee. We want to be in presence of Thee and You. We want to re-educate ourselves by service. And be found faithful in truth and living it. We thank Thee for guiding us to have this series of Jubilee gatherings for Thanksgiving before we begin the Holy Convocation on the 15th. To make our times fully flexible. Be in charge of these two gatherings. And pour upon us with a prayer and worship and praise. We all welcome from the Republic country to encourage us and get their portion too. We thank all of our servants who are here at this time with their families to encourage us and get their portion. We would like to name Thee holy and magnify Thee in our ministry. And I want no free portion. May we get a glimpse of the glory and the greatness of our dear Saviour. And may I grant not the high purpose for my church to show forth Thy glory so all the ages of my church. So we humble ourselves and bring ourselves in the presence of the Lord. We humbly pray that we fill the whole place with Thyself, Thy glory, and Thy presence. And take us to truth rapidly. We pray in the name of the Lord, Dear Saviour. Every promise in the book is mine. Every chapter, every verse, every line, all the blessings of His love divine. Every promise in the book is mine. Together, Psalm 92. 92nd Psalm. Would you praise God for enabling us to have these three days gathering for Thanksgiving because the Lord has been good to us for the last 25 years. It was September 1950 when I first left to come to the city. That time, we had no thought of staying here for more than a few days. The Lord's own faithfulness led us on all these past years. The Lord's own faithfulness led us on all these past years. So we have been led to have this period of three days for Thanksgiving, for all His goodness which we have tasted and the poverty we have experienced in abundance. So after this short message we will be having a number of worship and praise. Again tomorrow morning we gather here at 10 o'clock after a few testimonies again we have a worship and praise. Psalm 92 and verse 1 It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord and sing praises on thy name, O Most High. Verse 2 To show for thy loving kindness in the morning and to show faithfulness every night. Verse 3 Punishment of ten things one the salty one the hot is solemn sound. For thou Lord hast made me glad in thy work and I will praise the work of thy hands. Verse 5 O Lord how great is thy works and thy thoughts are very deep. The more we thank the Lord for the goodness and faithfulness and mighty power the more we receive His wondrous grace. So we can say in the verse 4 O Lord thou Lord hast made me glad in thy work and I will praise the works of thy hands. Verse 5 O Lord how great are thy works and thy thoughts are very deep. Verse 5 O Lord how great are thy works and thy thoughts are very deep. In the past twenty five years of the ministry in this area we have seen we have experienced God's grace in abundance and fullness. That is why we feel so constrained to request you all to help us to praise our Lord as worthy of the praise. We want to spend as much time as possible in pure worship and praise and thanksgiving unto Him. May it may help you to worship with all your heart by kneeling and knowing a few facts how Lord will lead us in the beginning over here. It was in the year 1941 Lord first led us to Ayodhya Ministry in Madras city Now before that we have been having quite large gospel campaigns and gospel raves in many parts of India. From the year 1936 to the year 1941 and we saw the Lord working mightily in many parts of India through these campaigns. But we did not see the spiritual growth that we have seen through God's word. Very good number who were born again so beautifully were backsliding. And that gave us a burden of prayer. As we have been on such a long journey receiving God's word upon our knees we began to see strong foundation through foundation we began to expect growth. And that is why among many names given to God's people in the Bible one name is God's building or God's house or God's habitation. And throughout God's building on human plan God's building can only be built on God's plan. Only then we can see God working fully and deeply or freely. Without burden without fear Lord led us in the month of June 1941 Madras city. And we began to see this very small house. With a determination to be the word of God as it is. And with such determination we came to the Lord and asked to tell us the word as it is. And went on praying Lord without fear to build Indian church and national church. We are one by church. Show for your glory and the manifold wisdom. And that requires perseverance and faith. And we knew beforehand we have to face unusual opposition and persecution in order to be fully regarded. But we enjoyed our hearts and began to face the opposition. Rather than feeling downcast, discouraged we felt privileged to go through the persecution. And we knew also that God is good at doing us not only for one particular place but for whole country and the country too. With that faith we went on studying the word of God and having regular online prayer meetings once a week and also other days. And we began to see how God has a very high purpose for this church as we see in the persecution. And as we read through the Ephesians we saw how God has a very high purpose for his church. He is not after multitude or a crowd. He wants a living church which he can show forth his glory and fullness and power and love. God's fullness is in the church. God's habitation is in the church. God manifolds with them to be revealed to the power and prosperity in heavenly places through his church. And God you cannot know whose height and depth like the best your knowledge only to his church. And God's love is in the church with his long and deep passion and his love And God's glory is in the church. Not the building but the living church. The word church is never used in Bible for a building. Then we began to see people don't grow spiritually by themselves. And that's why God gave fivefold gifts of apostles prophets evangelists pastors teachers for the work of the ministry. And in the gift of God they cannot be produced by human activity. They are raised up and prepared by the deeper working of the Holy Spirit among God's people. And God But for that we have to go through again all kind of persecution. It requires strong faith. With that faith we went on praying and laboring. And God fivefold gifts we went on praying and laboring. And began to see unless we are completely in the control of Lord Jesus of Heaven nor our movement we will not do His purpose. That's how we had many invitations from many places to go there and conduct revival of Gospel campaign. Again we see God's word is not by the multitude God wants us to obey Him and follow His leading. That's how after much prayer and many days of prayer fasting and prayer God will show up His plan which He had but of a weekly ministry and also future ministry. And God showed us now He wants us to be ready to take His message to almost all parts of India and many parts of the world. So we decided we are not going to be governed by our own wisdom in the least matter. We have no ambition to have many branches here and there. Lord we only want to obey Thee. You can take us anywhere anytime and the only way we will go. Lord we want to be sure that by time and Your plan. And that's what the Lord has given us entrance password in all the places in India and other countries. We have no preference for any city or any part of the country small one or large one. Generally we are tempted to be governed by a distance or a population or people limitation. Now we pray God may He seal all the past years as we gone out here and there. In the same way He led us also in Hyderabad city. Not in any human wisdom but only God plan. In 1948 one morning two sisters came to see me at Madras. One was in tears. She was in Hyderabad. She brought her husband who was very ill for treatment to Hyderabad city. And doctors could not diagnose the disease. She came with a request to ask her to go there to pray for her in hospital. We went there just for a few minutes and a word of prayer and came back. Just one very short message. Lord heard the prayer and healed the person. And the whole family came for worship meeting on the following Sunday at Jahashyama. From that time onward it began right towards Manikyam when we would come to our city of Hyderabad. Now till that time we had no burden to pray for him in this area. We only wanted to be sure of Lord's time, Lord's plan and Lord's purpose. Even though we came very near the city in 1949 Lord wouldn't give us permission. It's only in 1950 Lord gave instruction, now my time has come for you people to go to Hyderabad city. So even though we had at that time not only few but many invitations from different parts of Amrapadesh and North India. So after much prayer and waiting upon the Lord and sure of God's plan we agreed to come here in September 1950, 45 years ago. And first time we had our meeting for about three weeks in Secunderabad Tamil compound. And very first meeting, now this is not an ordinary time for the city. It so happened, it began to rain very heavily in our very first meeting we had in Secunderabad. And the meeting was not big enough to accommodate all the people. So many people had to stand outside the building, the umbrella the whole time of the meeting. And I'll give you some idea, what kind of hunger was now created by the Holy Spirit in all the hungry people. And at the same time we had to face unusual opposition as well. We were invited at that time by some of the doctors. On the very same compound where the guest house is available for those who will pay rent to stay there. And even people were wrong teaching, wrong doctrines were given on rent by those people. But the American minister, he got very angry with us and he chose to give any permission. We don't know why he got so angry. We had about twenty in the party at that time. We had no place to stay also, no house to stay. had to rush in the place turn by turn. Because all could not sleep at the same time. They would stay turn by turn. They were very happy time. We praise God for the privilege we have to pay all these things. The response was so great in every meeting. People kept on coming in larger number in every meeting. And many evening they had to stand in the rain outside. And Lord them the And that also started much opposition right time we began to preach about it. You find again, even though people may talk about any other wrong teaching, not trouble. But only when we talk about the scriptural teaching for baptism and worship of bread. They are stood up to give opposition. That's why the enemy hinders people from getting the sheer God's fullness. But the more these people oppose the truth, the more people came for baptism. And we found how and on every Sunday, about 45 or 50 were coming forward to baptise them in the Hussain Sagar lake. Even though we have only come there for a few days, we found so many people longing to be taught fully in God's purpose. We felt clearly we should make a provision for their teaching and growth. That's why we have felt that to them baptized in the Hussain lake, we have to make a provision growth. We have planned to have regular Bible study every morning, every evening in that building. And quite a good number of people came to come for the morning Bible study, evening Bible study, regularly, from many parts of the city. In a meeting also, there was one Roman Catholic in the military office. One day he came to me and said to me, will you come with me, I want you to show something of the city. He brought his car with him and took me to the seat of the pavilion. In those days, early days, that building was only meant for the Nizam to receive salutes from the military and the people. At that time, there was no other building in that place, only pavilion for the salute from the Nizam. After the police action, that building, that compound was brought under the military control. So he said to me, how would you like this building? It's a very nice big hall, very beautiful little place. I said, very nice building. And he said, how would you like the health building for your gospel campaign? And I said, how can we have something over here? We never dreamed of it. It's only meant for men like Nizam, not vast people. He said, you leave it to me. I said, you try. And next day he came to me with the order from the commanding officer. Hereby, you are permitted to hold your gospel campaign in this pavilion first. How many days would you like? Use everything freely, furniture and carpet, everything freely. That was the first God's approval. We had to engage the double decker buses from both sides, we were coming and going. Again, we began to see, what a hunger, God's word was being found among these people who came to us. Long distances, take part in the meeting, every evening. And many testified baptism is part of persecution from the pastors and the nation. So many came forward every Sunday, asking for baptism, some were even Hindus too. So that time, we thought, they thought, we are forced to leave, left behind some people. So they got together in a very big party, there to cause some disturbance. We announced, now, those of you who want to know about baptism, will you kindly gather at a place, at a time, in a pavilion. So they asked the Sadhikans to go and say, we also want baptism. So quite a group of them came alongside the crowd. So we had to question them one by one. When were you born again? What happened? What change took place? can you prove it? And after a few days, the man comes to me, we want He says, we want baptism. He says, we want baptism. He says, we want baptism. He says, why can't you make some provision for the village people? We also want teaching and ministry. I said no. place, Oxford street is not big enough for any people. Really meant for a few hundred people. How can we accommodate other people from villages? He said, come Ramvi, I'll show you a place. So he brought the car and brought it to the alien building. The old alien building. It was lying there vacant at that time. In those days there was a big stadium for tennis nearby. Now you have this telephone exchange building. But before that there was a stadium for tennis. And the building was intended for the big players who used to come to play matches and have a stadium. It was a very nice garden and big compound. The whole area was about three acres. So I went right to the whole building. I said, this is a good building but far too big for us. It was far, far too big. Anyway we went on the terrace from the top. And knelt down to pray. Not on the top of the building. Now Lord, what is your plan? The brother said, make some provision for the village folks. But this building is far too big. More than thirty or forty people were there. Very big garden. And we began to pray. Lord clearly said, Take it. It is for whole India. It is not only meant for Hyderabad city or Srinagar. I am giving you for the whole India. The rent was about rupees five hundred rupees. Right next day, Lord provided advance money to be given them for another two months. And that's why in the month of December, we shifted from Oxford Street to the building next door. Even then we were not allowed to stay too long. We were told to stay here for a month or so and have some Bible studying. Then go to another place. In this building here in Hebron now, Rappaji was living at that time. I never knew even he was living over here. When we came to see the next building, it never lies so near. So before we shifted to this building over here, and we were still staying at Oxford Street, Rappaji had to go to Skindabad town for some purpose. And he was standing at the bus stand to catch his bus to go to Skindabad. Then he found some sister with Bible in hand ready to take bus. They were from Ramnagar. And they were going to Oxford Street for their Bible study meeting. So they got down at Skindabad station. Got down at another bus station. Then five hours later, they followed him. That's how he also came for the first meeting in Oxford Street. And for many many years, he never got any meeting. And when we shifted to Elim compound, he asked to came over one day. And inquired from them, how long I could stay over here. And I don't know. He only came for a few days. And he saw we have no furniture there at that time in the building. He only had a few mats as we had. So he said, I have got some tables and chairs lying there unused. Can you use them for some time. Next morning he gave him baptized. And that's how we have seen Lord moving us by step day by day. So after two years, he said to me. In 1952, Lord is speaking to me to give you this compound for God's service. He was living over here. So I told him, we are not interested in the building. He only came for a short time. We go away anytime. So please give it to somebody else. He tried for two years to sell the building and couldn't sell it. And after two years, Lord spoke to us clearly. Now I want the building for my use taken. He had never wanted to be involved in any property. And that's how we have been here and we shifted here in 1959. He can't say only 69 years ago. About 16 years ago. Lord has been very gracious, very faithful and very merciful all these past 25 years. And he went on bringing people towards war for the country. He brought people from all parts of the country. We had our first holy convention over here in the year 1950. 50th December. Again we locked up and opened the door to other parts of Andhra and other countries. He has done great things. He has opened doors all over the country, many parts of the world. Lord has been gracious and faithful in all our limitations, unworthiness and failures. He has been gracious and faithful. And we want to serve him with this communicated devotion. And you find, only after much prayer, we are able to build this pandala over here and every part of it. We have knelt down on our knees in every part of the compound for days together to find God's plan for every part of it. At God's command, we left Elam and came over here. At God's command, we began the building of the pandala, another building. And as per God's command, we built the pandala and the buildings around it. And he gave us his plan for all the buildings you see here and there. And he went on supplying every need as I am here. He kept his word and used the ministry to almost every part of India, many parts of the world. And we want your help and your cooperation to praise God for his faithfulness. He has proven all these years. He led us faithfully and he kept his word to the end, every word. So we adore him for his faithfulness. And without saying anything more, we want to this evening spend some time in thanksgiving. We will be having some more time tomorrow and Friday also. Now we go to worship. O compassionate one, you are great.
