Brother Yun

Brother Yun (1958–present). Born Liu Zhenying on January 1, 1958, in Nanyang, Henan, China, Brother Yun is a Chinese house church leader, evangelist, and author, renowned for his role in the Back to Jerusalem movement. Raised in poverty, he converted to Christianity at 16 in 1974 after his mother’s renewed faith led to his father’s miraculous healing from lung cancer, sparking a family revival. Lacking a Bible, Yun fasted and prayed for one, receiving it after a divine vision guided evangelists to deliver it. He memorized Scripture, including the Gospel of Matthew, and began preaching at 16, reciting entire chapters to villagers, leading to widespread conversions despite China’s clampdown on Christianity in the 1980s and 1990s. As a house church leader, he faced severe persecution, arrested multiple times, tortured, and imprisoned for over seven years, including a 74-day fast he claims sustained him miraculously. In 1997, he escaped Zhengzhou Maximum Security Prison, attributing it to divine intervention, and fled to Germany, where he gained asylum. Yun authored The Heavenly Man (2002) with Paul Hattaway, detailing his persecution and miracles, and Living Water (2008), sharing his teachings; the former won the UK Christian Book of the Year in 2003. Married to Deling, with two children, he now ministers globally, advocating missions to unevangelized nations. He said, “We shouldn’t pray for a lighter load to carry, but a stronger back to endure!”

Sermon Transcription
And I told him that the Bible is the Word of God, and it's inspired by the Holy Spirit. And I told him that you have to have the key in your hands, you have to have the key of the Holy Spirit to open the words for you, because this is a very, very precious Word. And I said, this Word does not only give people eternal life, it also will heal all the sick. And I started to share my family testimony, how my father was dying of internal cancer, and just because we called upon the name of God of this Bible, my father was completely healed and restored from cancer. And he said, is that really truth? And I said, it's as truth as you understand, why should I otherwise be suffering for the sake of this Gospel and my testimony in this person? And then I saw that this is my opportunity, so I closed the door of the office of the prison commander, and I said to this man, right now is your opportunity, let's kneel down and I'll pray for you in the name of Jesus, and that the sickness you have in your lungs will be healed in the name of Jesus. And I said, commander, in the name of Jesus, you kneel down, and I was drawing him down. And I said, in the name of Jesus, I bring healing upon you, and your lungs will be restored. And not only that you will heal him, but you also bring him to understand that you are his Lord and Savior, and will forgive him from all his sins. And I said to this man, now you pray after me, you say, Jesus, I need your healing power. And I believe that the blood, your precious blood will cleanse me from all my sins, amen. And the simple way we prayed and we stood up. And I said, you try, do you still have that problem in your throat? Praise God, this commander became a believer of Jesus. And that's why it's so important that we should never be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. And we have to believe that the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ is mightier than any other power in this universe. And after the heart of the commander was changed, more and more inmates became believers of Jesus Christ. Not long after this, an invitation from China went out to Billy Graham to come and visit China. And this brother Billy Graham, he also loved a lot of the unofficial churches and their brothers and leaders of that church. And he had heard, he knew that for the sake of the gospel, there were numerous numbers of house church leaders who were in prison for the sake of the gospel. And so Billy Graham, he wrote a letter to China and that letter was transferred to some of my friends and my partners. And they sent a letter to me asking that, how is your situation? Billy Graham is coming to China to visit and he wants to know what is your personal situation in the prison. And this brother who wrote the letter to me to the prison, he was asking, can you write down about your circumstances and the suffering and the difficulties that you are facing in the prison right now and send them to me and I will deliver that to Billy Graham. And I didn't understand why would somebody want to know about this because for me it was natural to be suffering for the sake of Jesus. So I just write down a song about my situation saying that all what I'm going through is just bringing glory to the name of Jesus. And I said, my heart is filled with praise and love praising to God and I'm singing to the Lord every day in the prison. And in the name of Jesus, I'm going to be able to overcome all these difficulties. But when I was, I write that letter and as I send it with somebody out from prison, it was discovered and another problem arose. And as a result of this discovery, a big disaster hit my relatives and my church and many, many people were arrested. And not only that they found that one letter, but they discovered in my home that I had even before sent many letters out from the prison to encourage the believers to continue to fight the good fight for the gospel.
