| Love Her More and Love Her Less | | In my search for some solid, biblical material on marriage (since we have a big crisis on this in our Church) I came across a poem by John Piper. He wrote it for his son.
You can find the whole poem here, I will only post a few excerpts.
Here is a portion of the stream, My son: a sermon poem. It's theme: A double rule of love that shocks; A doctrine in a paradox:
If you now aim your wife to bless, Then love her more and love her less."
......
And if there comes a point when you Are tired, and pity whispers, "Do Yourself a favor. Come, be free; Embrace the comforts here with me." Know this! Your wife surpasses these: So love her, love her, more than ease.
......
Yes, love her, love her, more than life; O, love the woman called your wife. Go love her as your earthly best.
Beyond this venture not. But, lest Your love become a fool's facade, Be sure to love her less than God.
It is not wise or kind to call An idol by sweet names, and fall, As in humility, before A likeness of your God. Adore Above your best beloved on earth The God alone who gives her worth.
.......
The greatest gift you give your wife Is loving God above her life. And thus I bid you now to bless: Go love her more by loving less.
Be blessed all you out there who are married, plan to get married, have a serious relationship and those who have no relationship at all. So, in short: all of you.
Let us treasure Christ. _________________ Paul

so this is the best you can do?
:-o Ouch!
He didn't say it was 'the best he can do'. He said he 'came across a poem'. It was the poem he wanted to share. What's wrong with that? (By the way, do you know him personally, to enter the conversation with such a challenge?)
Don't you find the exerpts from the poem are thought-provoking?
I know a twenty-something who is seeking God for a wife. It has come as a huge shock to him that God will want him to love Him more than her..... This one point is really exercising his heart.
I think DezCall's post does what it set out to do. |

| Re: Love Her More and Love Her Less | | -Hi, Dez; thanks for sharing this treasure from your youth with an old preacher (my oldest is your age). It's times like these when I recall that the youngest member of Job's panel was the wisest..

Indeed Brother Green! You have gotten the wrong idea! ;-)
I believe you'll find that your question, "Love her more or less?" is a less then faithful paraphrase of the poem Dez posted.
From reading the Piper poem, I take it as a simple reminder: carefuly balance loving your bride more then your own life, but not to the level of idolatry, supplanting your love for God.
Yeah, it's not scripture but at least it's scriptural.
The thread's just started...let's see how things develop before reaching a conclusion. Your interest in the subject matter is evident...why not contribute productively?
BTW, are you married?
Blessings,
MC

| Re: | | BrotherGreen,
I wonder if you treat those in your own life with such contempt, rash words, and arrogance. It's just a poem, and it is a blessing to some.
Is that how our Lord Jesus Christ treats you when you are blessed by something that is below His Spirituality? Or, do you really know the heart of Christ? If so, I cannot see how you could possibly be so rash and judgmental. |

I'm not being Judgmental! if you thrist you drink from the spring! Right! so call me what you will, for telling him to read the Living Water the Holy Bible. |

| Re: | | Green, Exactly, what is wrong with this?
The greatest gift you give your wife Is loving God above her life. And thus I bid you now to bless: Go love her more by loving less.
I have been married to the same man 38 years, going on 39 and plan to be married till death do us part. And I can promise you, to love God MORE then your spouse is the ONLY thing that will help you make a marriage work!!! You submit to God and his authority, you fear HIM. As you do so, He will enable you to submit to others, serve others He has placed in your path. To believe otherwise is to invite disaster.
