 What is Love?

Words that we take from Scripture tend to become like clothes that have been hanging on the line for a long time. Just as clothes lose their strength and their well-defined colors, so too the original meaning of words fade and deteriorate over time just by the way they are used.

It is especially that way with the word, “Love” Love has become a rather wishy-washy, generalized meaningless word – that has absolutely nothing to do with its God-intended meaning.

I firmly believe that Scripture makes it very clear what love really means. Jesus himself used a variety of parables to make the meaning come alive. Above all, he defined the word, “love” by demonstrating it with his life. Maybe that is the best way we can define love – by discovering it, and by living it.

There is something else I want to understand:
I have heard the three Greek words for love: eros, phileo, and agape, agape being the “highest” form of love (for God). Yet, I notice that “agape” is used in this reference: “Do not love (agape) the world…. I Jn. 2:15

So clearly there is good and bad agape love.

Since love is the hallmark, the bed-rock indication of true eternal life, I think this is a worthy pursuit.

I would like to make a collection of Biblical references to love. Maybe you can help me by posting some, and sharing what God is teaching you about “love”.

I was reading John 21 this morning. In this chapter there is a very interesting discussion between the Lord Jesus and Peter concerning the whole nature and quality of his love for Jesus.

[i]So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.[/i](John 21:15-17)

It's well known that in this discussion Jesus used one word for love (agape) and Peter used another and a lesser(phileo). The quality of love is tested by our ability to let go and empty ourselves before the Lord Jesus. I think Jesus was trying to teach them this very thing when he washed their feet at the last supper. No mere 'fondness' will do; proven, faithful, undenying love is in view. I think that is the heart of this conversation between the two and it is a great change of heart for the aggressive and impetuous Peter, the fisherman, to become one who tends lambs. Only by the fullness of the Spirit is it possible.

If I could define what I believe, what Jesus and Paul "exhibited" as "Love", it was Self Sacrifice.

'Sacrifice' for others only, for the sake of Truth or what's right. And in that attempt, the person will do whatever it takes to save someone from damnation, save them from dangerous or erroneous beliefs or sin or help in a time of need ... despite the cost to themselves, whether it be laying down their life for them, losing their "reputation", being misunderstood, losing friendships, having them get mad at you, ostracize you, lose out financially, stand completely alone ... 'whatever' the loss ... Love must be an 'action' verb, and only 'self-less-Action-Sacrifice' - with others in mind Only, can even begin to describe The Love that is displayed in God's Word by Jesus Himself and his disciples.

You had requested some verses.

Starting in Deut. and several times throughout Deut and the rest of the O.T. ... 'Before' the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit, who 'assists' us now, to Love with HIS Love.

Deut. 6:5-7 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. (Mat 5:43) But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; (Mat 5:44)

For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? (Mat 5:46)

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Mat 6:24)

Honor thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Mat 19:19)

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.



And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. (Mat 24:12)

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

It is a love which has chosen and totally committed itself to another. It is the love Paul speaks of in Galatians: “the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Gal. 2:20, KJVS) It is a love in which the giver gives not just gifts but himself. What a long list of verses!!!! probably the longest post I have yet encountered on this forum.

Yet, I firmly believe that these verses will remain useless and limp until one truely knows love BY EXPERIENCE. One must first feel loved, believe that they are loved, and rest in love. Otherwise, the depth of love will always remain illusive.

Explaining love to one deprived of love is like explaining color to a color-blind person. With that in mind, I see why the following verse deserves a great deal of serious consideration. It is a brilliant model of prayer:

I pray that you,
being rooted and established in love,
may have power,
together with all the saints,
to grasp how wide and long
and high and deep is the love of Christ,
and to know this love that surpasses knowledge
—that you may be filled to the measure
of all the fullness of God.
Eph. 3:17

I suspect that every single relational problem that has ever exists could be the product of a love-deficiency. With that in view, then the solution would be to figure out how to fill the vacuum - ie, LOVE. It should not be surprising then that our highest calling is to LOVE others, and desire that they know the love of God.

This is not an issue of being 'NICE'. Jesus revealed by his life that love can be bold, fierce, and disturbing. But Jesus knew what was needed to draw all people to himself - his glorious redemptive love.

I don't recall Jesus saying, "I love you." too often, but instead he actually did it. Words are cheap. Action is costly - even can cost our lives.

Dear God, please reveal to me where I shun your love. Help me accept your love for me, so that I may be able to love others with a Christ-like love.

I spent a fair bit of time meditating on the verses in the Vine's link that you gave. Thank you. It is very revealing to examine the greek words.
Phileo refers to affection for someone - which is good and needed, but agape goes far beyond that, as you explained.
This would be good to point out to one who says, "I'm divorcing my husband because I just don't have any love for him any more."

No question, phileo may dwindle, but agape stands any trials, even desertion and betrayal, because agape rests in God's love, and desires that one knows God's love.

Although this plainly is not the way it was from the beginning. God's love has not depended upon His first 'being loved'. AgapE is love 'in spite of' rather that 'because of'. For the regenerate there is no excuse... the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. We have been loved and are loved and have received love; we are without excuse if we do not love.

There is a passage in Peter which I have always found challenging: “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:” (1Pet. 1:22, KJVS) Here Peter seems to be declaring that because we have known love we are obligated to love others. Almost as though he were to say 'you have received love, now use it'. God has brought you to genuine brotherly love, see that you do love one another from a pure heart, fervently.

I think I may have shared this testimony here before. Some years ago I had grown apart from a brother whose pattern of church life was very different to my own. There had been no quarrel but just an increasing distancing. I heard that he was experiencing some severe difficulties and was on my way to visit him. As I drove I was praying along the lines of 'Lord, please reveal your love to my brother at this time...' It was one of those times when God interrupts prayer and I heard a clear 'No, I will not' in my heart. I was dumbfounded and asked 'why not'. The answer came as clear as crystal 'You show my love to him'.

It is so easy to pray the right things but God will have no pretence in these things! Prayer is not an alternative to obedience.
