I believe the answer is found in the preceeding verse:
22 "And Jehovah God said, Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also from the tree of Life and eat and live forever_
23 The Jehovah God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to work the ground from which he was taken."
As a result of Adam's disobedience in eating of the tree of the knowlege of Good and evil, He "became like God knowing good and evil." He became an independant self centered creature without the Life of God. But in himself he was "self sufficient".
He had taken in the poisen of the serpent and become corrupted. His flesh became "the flesh of sin".
The Tree of Life represents God's Eternal Life in Christ. Because Adam had sinned and fallen, God would not have his Spirit within man. God placed the Cheribum in front of the Tree of Life with the flaming sword which turned in every direction to gruard the way to the Tree of Life (vs. 24).
I like the footnote in the RcV:
God closed the way to the tree of life by means of three items; the cherubim, the flame, and the sword. Cherubim signify God's glory, the flame signifies God's holiness, and the sword for killing indicates God's righteousness. These attributes of God placed requirements on sinful man. Since sinful man was unable to meet these requirements (Rom. 3:10-18, 23) he was not permitted to contact God as the tree of life, until Christ fulfilled the requirements of God's glory, holiness, and rightousness by His all-inclusive death on the cross to open a new and living way for us to enter the Holy of Holies and partake of the tree of Life."

| Re: | | ""But in himself he was "self sufficient"."" Adam in believing what Satan said, which was a lie, he Adam had chosen whom he would believe and now was affiliated within Satan's lie, "surly God knows you will be like Him," Genesis 3:4-5 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil, a self unto self and would be until the Tree of Life had sacrificed Himself on the Cross, that the Perfect would shed His blood that sin and death might be taken away. Those that would not believe in the Sacrificed Lamb of God would parish and the Blood of Christ could not save them because of non belief. Not believing in God the Father sacrificing His Own Lamb that we might be saved by believing in the Truth.
Hebrews 9:22-28 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
The only thing that is not covered by the blood of Christ is the non belief in The Blood of Christ, so also that the belief in Satan's lie would be reversed and the Truth of God Himself, Jesus Christ would now be our life unto God, not belief in Satan unto sin and death.
They were kicked out of the garden so they would not be eternally in sin and death.
Very simple believe in Christ and Live or believe in the lie of Satan and die.
In Christ: Phillip

| Re: | | I think if we look a little bit closer we see that He says,
22....lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Here we see that God knowing that since Adam & Eve already became wise by their own power by TAKING from the tree of knowledge he said......lets get them out of paradise before they TAKE from the tree of life. Verse 23 begins...THEREFORE the LORD sent them out.
So we see they were sent out so that they would not TAKE from the tree of Eternal Life.
This is so important. Just like in John chapter 6, i am the bread of life who was GIVEN to us by the Father. We can't just by our own will TAKE salvation. We must receive it. The word says, I chose you, you did not choose me. In John 17 Jesus uses the word give or variations of the word GIVE 18 times.
In John 10 the Lord tells us he is the true gate, and anyone who comes in any other way is a THIEF AND A ROBBER. Why because they are trying to TAKE salvation.
In John chapter 1 says it best:
12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Not by our blood (not because we were born into a Christian family), not by the will of flesh (or because we are chosing God), or not by the will of man (because some pastor urges us or coerses us to the alter; "repeat after me" salvation) but by the will of God.
So we see we were sent out of Paradise not so much as a punishment, but more out of Grace to protect us from TAKING salvation just as the Multitudes wanted to TAKE Jesus as their King in John 6. But instead we are to RECEIVE salvation only after we have been called by the Spirit of God to surrender completely to him.
It's not man's job to bring salvation, we are just messengers. The Spirit brings us conviction which leads us to a Godly sorrow which leads us to Salvation.

The Tree of Life was also "Given by the Father". He said, "freely eat".
The issue was that God would not have fallen Adam taking of the Tree of Life because the Tree of Life represents God's Eternal Uncreated Life and God would not dwell in Adam because he was fallen.
The Cheribum, the sword and the flame represent God's Glory, His rightousness, and holiness, and Adam was short of these and so disqualified to eat of the Tree of Life.
Only By Christ's redeeming death are God's requirements met and the way to the Tree of Life opened up that we my "freely eat".
Because Christ has died, we are redeemed and justified. Because Christ rose from the dead, we regenerated by His Life.
Christ is the Tree of Life and brings the Life of God into us making us sons of God.

If you read the whole text closely, you will see that actually that "he would become as God knowing good and evil" was not the lie. Because in 3:22 God said:
"Behold the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil..."
The lie was "ye shall not surely die". But Adam did die. His spirit died and he was cut off from the Tree of Life. And his body came under the sentence of death to return to the ground from which it was taken.
Adam did become as God, knowing good and evil. He became an independant creature, making his own determinations of "good and evil" and that became the basis of his fallen human existance.
God's intent for Adam was that he take of the tree of Life and eat and God Himself would become his content. He would have lived by the indwelling Life of God. He would be permeated with the Divine Life and have God Himself as his wisdom, knowlege, rightousness, and his everything. He would have been God's expression on the earth and through multiplying Man would have become God's corporate expression on the Earth to rule it, subdue it and deal with God's enemy.
Rather he fell, taking in Satan's poisen and was corrupted and died. His multiplication became the satanic world system animated by, 'the spirit that now works in the sons of disobedience.
Christ has died to redeem man, to undue the effects of the fall, and to bring God in Christ as the Spirit into him as the Tree of Life making him a regenerated child of God, partaker's of the Divine nature, and destined to be God's corporate expression as the New Jerusalem in the New Earth under the New heavens.
