Over 450 Christian Families Flee After 2,000 Muslims Torch Village
December 13, 2005

The Voice of the Martyrs – Michael F. Haverluck

A militant mob of approximately 2,000 Muslims attacked the village of Sangla Hill, Pakistan on November 13th, forcing more than 450 Christian families to flee for their lives. Vandalized and set ablaze were three churches, a pastor’s home, a youth hostel, a convent, two schools and many Christian homes. Fearing further violence, many Christian families remained away from their homes for some time.

This was an act of vengeance in the name of Islamic jihad for a Christian’s alleged desecration of the Muslim Koran. This was based on a false allegation made two days before the rampage. Yousaf Masih, an illiterate Christian who could not distinguish the Koran from any other book, was the target of Muslim extremists’ trumped-up charges. Pakistan’s Justice and Peace Commission acknowledged the lie and Masih’s innocence when it proclaimed that the local police were likely involved in this shameful attack. Punjab region’s law enforcement has been known to justify its violence with Islamic hatred towards Christians. The commission has mandated a judicial inquiry into the police’s connection to the violence, calling for strict action to be taken against the officers.

Please pray that God will strengthen the persecuted Christians in Sangla Hill, giving them hearts of forgiveness for their Muslim attackers and a willingness to boldly witness to them in the midst of their suffering.
