Joshua 14
Caleb speaking to Joshua:
[8.] Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God. [9.] And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God.
Coomment: Caleb wholly [fully consecrated and sanctified] followed the Lord. He was man of great faith and devotion to his Lord. God responded by promising him an inheritance in the promise land [Beulah land, the land of victory over sin; the land of spiritual conquest and fruit a hundred fold.]
[10.] And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.
Comment: Despite the lengthy sojourn in the wilderness, Caleb is as just as devoted, faithful and in love with His Lord as he was 40-years ago. He wants God best, because he has God his all.
[11.] As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
[12.] Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
Comment: Oh, that we would never grow tired or content; to be like Caleb; the fire never stopped burning in his heart.
[13.] And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.
Comment: When we read about a blessing, being blessed or I will not let Thee go unless Thou bless me, we must pause. In this sense, it is a very deep experienced to be blessed of the Lord.
[14.] Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.
Joshua 15
[14.] And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.
Comment: Still accomplishing exploits for the Lord.
[15.] And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher.
[16.] And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
[17.] And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
Comment: Now, notice, Calebs influence on the life of his daughter. She is about to get married, but she has another Beloved. She wants a spiritual blessing, or that is how I interpret it. It could also mean she was land hungry, but I prefer to think of it in a spiritual sense. She comes to her godly father and seeks a blessing. His life was her inspiration. He lived the blessed life, and she wanted what he had. She, in turn, sets an example for us.
[18.] And it came to pass, as she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?
Comment: Can you hear God asking us: What wouldest thou? What do you want form me? What can I do for you>
[19.] Who [she herself] answered, Give me a blessing;
Comment: Oh, that we would pray like this and plead for a blessing, a deep spiritual experience of full consecration and death to self; a infilling or baptism of the Holy Ghost; a fire inside that is never quenched or dimmed.
for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water.
Comment: Oh, give me springs of water. Did not the woman at well ask Jesus the same? Did he not say that if you know who I am, you would ask me for living water? Out of your inner most being shall spring rivers of living water. Oh, that we would not rest until we receive this living water.
And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.
Caleb responded by giving her not one blessing, but a double portion. Elijah asked Elisha: Ask what I shall do for thee. (Similar to what Caleb told his daughter). And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of they spirit be upon me. Oh, for the upper springs and the nether springs. Lets not be content with the south land. God has more for us. He has for us the upper springs. But he has more, according to our desire. He also has for us the nether springs a double portion if we would but only ask.
His Word is ever fresh.
