 Religious Hatred Bill

In England on October 11th, Our Government will try to pass an amendment to a law passed some years ago dealing with religious and racial crimes. This amendment, however, will open up the law to wider interpretation, meaning, ultimately, that anyone who speaks publicly about a subject that MAY cause offence, or distributes literature which can be CONSIDERED as offensive, may be prosecuted and imprisoned up to 7 years. One top lawyer described the law as bringing in a ‘thought crime’, as it is not what you say or write but what people think is the motive behind what you are saying that makes it a crime.
As Christians, we need to pray that it will be rejected. If you live in England or Wales, you should write to your MP and encourage others to do so. This is a very important subject as it may mean the end of freedom of speech as we know it, criminalizing street preaching and the handing out of tracts, forbidding the display of Christian texts (like bumper stickers) and lead some churches to water down their Gospel even more.
