 Jessie Penn-Lewis and Evan Roberts.

I have recently watched a video on YouTube about the events of the Welsh Revivals and was shocked at how biased it was.

I came across JPL about a year before I was sanctified or illumined by the Lord in 1990 and it was instrumental in me seeking Him this way and she was a deeply spiritual woman and used by God to speak to me through a leaflet called "The pathway to life in God". It had a profound effect on me. Later "The Normal Christian Life" Nee, did the trick and I entered into His rest.

In the video however, it mentioned JPL in a scathing manner, blaming her for what happened to Roberts which I know was wrong. Not once did it mention that JPL and HER HUSBAND took Roberts in and let him recover in their Leicester home. JPL herself had been chronically sick for a long time and would have sympathized with Roberts, who to me, was already at that time showing signs of demonism.

JPL spoke strongly against the way that the Welsh revival had been taken over by demonic forces and of course that brought down the persecution on her by their forces, discrediting her and ruining her reputation.

Roberts was said to have been kept, imprisoned practically, by her, yet after she died and he had left to live on his own, he still withdrew from society and continued in his sick mental condition. Everything about him reeks of demons. I have known others destroyed by the Pentecostal/charismatic movement.

The book "War on the Saints" is an excellent description of how the devil had infiltrated the Pentecostal Movement and still is there fooling people.

//"There is not any doubt but that there is a true work of the Spirit of God in the Movement, and souls will be saved wherever the Gospel is proclaimed. But the widespread testimony to a concurrent stream of a working of demons, producing experiences in the body which are frequently not even a “counterfeit,” but a parody of the true work of the Holy Spirit, together with erroneous teachings centered primarily around the experience of physical manifestations, shows that there is some course of action, or line of teaching in the Movement, that lends itself too easily to counterfeit. Briefly, the line between the “true” and the “counterfeit” is too fine for safety, at a time when the evil supernatural is so actively at work in the world around."

She began to speak more strongly against the movement, particularly the “passivity” of its followers.46 Writing in The Overcomer, Penn-Lewis reached the conclusion that “. . . evil spirits can, and do, find entry to the bodies or minds of true children of God, and that the door has been peculiarly opened to them through the medium of ‘Tongues.’ . . .// An Hour of Peril. 1908 Jessie Penn-Lewis

Re: Jessie Penn-Lewis and Evan Roberts.

Brenda,

you claim to be entirely sanctified, but claim Evan Roberts was demonized, and you say that tongues opens the door for demons in a believer.

First of all, there are other sources that report that Evan Roberts simply withdrew to a life of intercession.
Do you know the absolute truth about it?

Secondly, tongues open doors for demons? I know there are demonic tongues and have heard them, but tongues in itself do not lead to demonization. Where do you find that?

Somethings not right here.

 Re:

The Truth about Evan Robert’s and Jessie Penn Lewis:

“Exhaustion and breakdown

Though he was clearly exercising spiritual gifts and was sensitive to the Holy Spirit , he became unsure of the “voices” he was hearing. The he broke down and withdrew from public meetings. Accusation and criticism followed and further physical and emotional breakdown ensued.

Understandably, converts were confused. Was this God? Was Evan Roberts God’s man or was he satanically motivated? He fell into a deep depression and in the spring of 1906 he was invited to convalesce at Jessie Penn-Lewis’ home at Woodlands in Leicester.

It is claimed that Mrs Penn Lewis used Evan’s name to propagate her own ministry and message. She supposedly convinced him he was deceived by evil spirits and, over the next few years co-authorised with Evan “War on the Saints”, which was published in 1913. This book clearly delineates the confusion she had drawn Evan into. It left its readers totally wary of any spiritual phenomena of any kind or degree. Rather than giving clear guidelines regarding discerning satanic powers, it brought into question anything that may be considered, or that might be described, as Holy Spirit activity. Within a year of its publication, Evan Roberts denounced it, telling friends that it had been a failed weapon which had confused and divided the Lord’s people.“

 Re: how-jezebel-killed-one-of-the-greatest-revivals-ever

Beware the Spirit of Jezebel

The pastor of his church let him start holding meetings on Oct. 31. The meetings turned into a two-week revival marked by fervent faith, strong intercession and late-night services that sometimes lasted until sunrise. Those meetings ignited a revival that spread across the world, including to Azusa Street in Los Angeles. But it wasn’t long before Roberts cracked under the strain of the pressure.

“By 1905, Roberts’ mind became confused from physical and emotional exhaustion. He began hearing conflicting voices in his head and doubted his ability to distinguish the voice of the Spirit among them,” Liardon writes. “He would rebuke his listeners for not being pure of heart, while he became increasingly obsessed with examining his own self for un-confessed sin. He feared most that he would be exalted instead of God and became overly critical of his audiences and church leaders.”

The revival finally fizzled out in 1905 when the spirit of Jezebel operating through Jesse Penn-Lewis, a Welsh evangelical speaker and author, beguiled young Roberts. Penn-Lewis seduced and deceived the revivalist in the prime of his anointing.

Penn-Lewis, whose doctrine was largely rejected in Wales and is even now described as apostate teaching by some modern theologians, sought to ride on Roberts’ coat-tails.

Ironically, this Jezebelic woman flattered him with words that aimed to ease the suffering he was experiencing from the religious spirits in the midst of revival. But her smooth words didn’t heal his soul. He suffered a nervous breakdown and went to live at this wealthy woman’s home to recover.

“They built their new home around his needs, including a bedroom, prayer room and private stairway. It was there that the great revivalist was confined to bed for more than a year,” says Liardon. “Evan became ever more isolated and reclusive as years passed. He refused to see friends, and eventually family. He allowed Penn-Lewis to dictate who he would see, and what he would do. They wrote a number of books together, the first one, War on the Saints, was published in 1913. Mrs. Penn-Lewis stated the book was birthed from six years of prayer and testing the truth. Within a year after the book was published, Roberts denounced it. He was quoted as saying it had been a ‘failed weapon which had confused and divided the Lord’s people.'”

Jezebel Hates Revival

Although he lived to be 72, Roberts stopped preaching in his early 20s. That’s the story in brief. If you’d like to read more, check out God’s Generals: Evan Roberts. The moral of the story is that Jezebel hates revival. As I’ve written in my book, The Spiritual Warrior’s Guide to Defeating Jezebel, this spirit hates the prophetic voice, but it also hates signs and wonders and miracles—and revival. Jezebel is an anti-Christ spirit that will stop at nothing to pervert the voice of God or even an entire move of God.

Are you the same Brenda that was on here when waltern was on here and others and always argued about being 100% sanctified?

 Re:

Lysa yes I have been here before but don't recall the name waltern. I have always stood for 100% sanctification

Brethren

Yes I am aware of the 'official' account of what happened but I don't believe a bit of it. Don't forget that the victor always writes history.

I know what JPL taught - entire sanctification and it is absolute rubbish that she would be against revival as she had read the same writers as me and was in support of their theology - traditional holiness teaching. Unfortunately this came up against the false one that began at Azusa and obviously came to a head in the Welsh Revivals.

The facts are plain - JPL died a long time before Roberts yet he continued to stay in hiding till his death. Now why would he go against God's calling on his life? Anyone heard of demons? All you need is discernment to get to the root of it.

The man was destroyed by demons. It is plain to see yet the false historians will try to make you believe that JPL was to blame. What rubbish. I don't know why folk are taken in by it.

 Re:

@Brenda "evil spirits can, and do, find entry to the bodies or minds of true children of God, and that the door has been peculiarly opened to them through the medium of ‘Tongues.:

I'm so thankful we have Christ, the apostles, and prophets to teach us truth concerning everything through the Holy Spirit, through the very Word of God!

"Therefore, my brothers and sisters, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues." (1 Cor 14:39) Thats a command, not a suggestion.

It is one thing to in love, with tears call for repentance and a turning back to Christ, our Everything! Even a turning back to the pure Word of God, which again is our precious Christ! Which is our primary defense against deception, along with His Spirit! However, to try to create confusion, cause fear, cause senseless divisions, and to even cast doubt on younger believers concerning gifts of the Holy Spirit from within a multitude of other books! I must in love suggest you read over 1 Corinthians 14 a few times in prayer, it will certainly be a help to you, and a precious guide from our beloved apostle Paul. Father's will be done.

Added: I have through Christ witnessed the two kingdoms clashing! The Holy Spirit is greater than any demon in this world no matter it's ranking! Even Satan Himself is not greater than He who lives within us, and I know this biblically and experientially through our precious Word, Christ Jesus! He who lives within us truly twice borns, is greater than He who lives within this fallen world! I would go deeper in depth, width and height, however here I'm directed to stop. May Christ reveal just how mightily powerful, beyond magnificent, intensely protective, long suffering, agape loving, joyful, gentle and self-controlled He truly is to you friend. Him truly being God Himself partaking of our own humanity, to save a people for Himself, and then indwelling them!

 Re:

Sorry billy that was JPL speaking (fixed error).

Let me remind you that Satan appeared in heaven (Job), and is therefore not restricted in where he can go. It is his greatest deception, in fooling believers, that they are immune from his influence. Where there is sin, he has rights.

I have studied 1 Cor 14 and the rest of the letter, intensely but lets keep to the subject here - Mrs Jessie Penn-Lewis. This web site tells the truth about her and one can see that she had no reason to 'piggy-back' on the name of Evan Roberts, as she already had an international ministry which included help for the burnt out.

https://www.cbeinternational.org/resource/life-and-influence-jessie-penn-lewis/

It is stated here that she was esteemed by such as Oswald Chambers who seems to have some clout here. Andrew Murray, F. B. Meyer, Watchman Nee and F. J. Huegel esteemed her too. You know, I have read the lies about her, repeated from a number of Pentecostal sources, and that alone would give me caution about the integrity of the Movement and its proponents. They never were concerned about high academic standards I have discovered.

God will not bless any group of people who propagate lies and the destruction of the reputation of a saint. I have discovered that error here looking at past messages.

Colin: I realize you are only posting an article someone else wrote, so you are not saying everything the article says. But I wonder, in reference to the author of the article, where does anyone find any shred of scriptural teaching on this statement that there is such a thing as a "Spirit of Jezebel" and that it "hates revival"?
