 WHAT SEEK YE

TEXT: JOHN 1:39

'Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?'

To seek God for God's sake, and to seek Him for what He gives, are two distinct things. To many, God is a means to an end, never the end; these mind God's grace--gifts, blessings, mercies, &c. instead of His face. God is an end to be vigorously pursue; a trophy to be won; a work to be done; a Lord to be honoured; a deity to be worshipped and glorified; and a husband to be pleased and faithful to. Jesus compares the following after Him to a man building a tower; and a king going to war: God, as it were, is a tower to be built and a war to be fought and won. Our meaning in all of these, is that God is a serious business. Many spend their entire energies fighting for what God can give them, instead of expending their strength on winning the face and heart of God. How many are there who see God as a fountain of comfort, consolation, peace, wealth &c. only, but failed to realise that there is more to life than just to be happy in life. These are not in the company of them who are wont to say, 'whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee?' Strong saints are more interested in their labour than their wages; they seek not comfort above their duty to God; whether they receive smiles from God's face or not, they lessen not in duty to God. Christian labourers should see their labours as their reward from God. Strong saints seem to go to warfare at their charges; they plant and tend vineyard not minding whether they eat of it or not; and they mind not the milk of the flock they feed. God is the only thing in their eyes, not God's. His goodwill not His goods, is all they desire. Friends, what seek ye? Is it fame, name, glory and riches that you seek? Or the glory and honour of God? God's cannot make you truly happy, only God can. His bounty can not fill up your need of Him, only Him can! None has right to be restful and satisfied, who has not taken hold of God and make Him his sole portion on this side heaven and hereafter. All who are only made happy by God's, would have their happiness punctured when wears and tears nock at the door of their comfort. He is not a man to be considered stable, whose comfort flows from things instead of God. Examine yourselves oh saints! what saddens you? What frets you? What disquiets you? Is it not earth-born things? Would you have rest from morn till even? Make God your chief and only joy!
